Factory grips
What do people do with the factory grips when they replace them with rubber?I see guns that appear to be in mint shape all the time, that have them.I think a lot of people give them to the store when they swap them out for for rubber. I saw a 4 screw no model number 29 a while back that had rubber on it.Some goober also had it mag-na-ported.

I saw a guy here awhile back get a pristine set of Nframe targets for $1 @ a garage sale that were in the Pachmayr box. Someone took them off and put them in the box when the gun was new. Joe

If they're smart, they put them in the original box with the tools and papers and keep it all in a safe place.
There's a pretty big market for original S&W stocks and the value of some might surprise you.
ps. I've seen .44 Magnum grips (Cokes) bring between $300 and $400. Maybe that's why they were missing from a Mag-na-ported gun.

No knowlegeable gun person would do that..but a newbie might get taken advantage of in that situation by the gun store

I wrap the originals for safe storage and mark what they are for. That is, when I get the original grips...

Sir, FWIW, I've long done this with guns that I bought new.
Regarding rubber grips, 20-30 years ago it was common to buy a new set of Pachmayrs at the same time you bought your new Smith. This was particularly true of magnums.
Hope this helps, and Semper Fi.

Yup... over 20 years ago I put these up and hadn't seen em since. Never been used. They go on a 65 I just posted a picture of with Pachmayr grip. Hopefully I'll be around to see em in another 20....

When I started tradeing guns heavy in the 1960s and 70s, I am guilty as charged. In those days I recall seeing boxs of odd grips in shops for next to nothing. I sometimes bought guns and didnt even get their boxs! I bought from a friend a as new 1950 target that had the magna grips, pulled them off, put on a set of large targets, and I havent been able to find the originals in the 40 years since I bought it!

I never liked rubber grips. Since I started buying guns 40 years ago I've always gone the Tyler T orig. wood route. I've inherited many guns over the years with rubber grips, they always come off. I do recall however early on being afflicted with the "trigger shoe" addiction. ALL the gun shops around here have emptied their grip boxes and put the contents on ebay.

There is nothing wrong with taking off the original wood grips and putting on rubber grips if they work better for you.
What bugs me is when people take off the wood grips and then sell or discard them. For example, I have a really nice set of Cokes from my no dash Model 29 that I took off and replaced with Herrett stocks. But the Cokes went into the safe and will NEVER be sold.
