When I about 7yrs old we used the term "driver" when we hunted in large groups. The "drivers" lined up and spread out then all walked in the same direction pushing the deer to "standers" positioned all around in strategic areas where deer were known to try to escape. They would yell out things to put up deer like "YOOOOOO BUCK!" or WHHOOOOOP!".

We hunted...simple as that. Didn't use spears, bow and arrows, sling propelled rock, or anything like that. We used firearms.

Father liked to hunt, father liked to reload. We had hunting magazines and gun rags around. Maintained a fair sized library of shooting/hunting literature.

A farmer/rancher....guns were and are a fact of life. I've seen my dad turn the truck around in the middle of the road if we left the house to go to another farm, and had forgotten to bring a rifle!

When your 14/15 years old, works done, and pops asks you if you want to go up to Kansas to hunt pheasant, what do you say?

You say "Hell yea" that's what you say!

People of baby boomer age grew up watching cowboy shows, Army shows, Davy Crockett, everyone had guns. We then graduated to BB guns because all our friends had them. From BB guns, we went to 22 rifles. All our relatives had rifles and shotguns, and they kept them loaded, sitting by the door. Ah, the good ole days.

My parents had nothing to do with it.My mom made my dad get rid of the type 99 Arisaka he had . She was afraid to have it in the house with me around. They did let me get a BB gun at abought 15 years old the first real gun I got at 18 was a .12 ga.Remington 870 next was a Marlin Glenfield model 60 .22lr .My first hand gun was a Browning H.P.that I had a friend buy for me and had to wait 2 more years for him to transfer it to me. My parents never could understand my need to have so many guns.I grew up with a sand pit in my back yard it was a perfect place to shoot.

My dad, a Korean war vet, never wanted me around firearms at all. Imagine the shock on his face when I came home from boot camp with my marksman ribbon, and proceeded to do the same later overseas with pistols!

My father grew up on a farm/ranch in Northern Alabama and was a Combat Veteran of WWII in Europe and the Pacific.
He didn't start teaching me to hunt and shoot until I was four years old. We hunted and shot together until he was in his early 70s.

Some of my best memories are of my father teaching me about guns and hunting.

Both my parents were ardently anti gun.

So much so that I was out of the house married for a few years before I bought my first pistol.

I'd bought and hidden a Ruger 10/22 my junior year of HS. (1972) and believe me when I say it was a highly guarded state secret!

Watching the news, TV shows of the day, etc. combined to inform me that evil was conquered with firearms. Well, one of the ways anyway...

My Dad passed in 86, but my Mom is still around. She was none too happy to hear that I defended my family on a camping trip against 2 BG's with my pistol. So anti gun is she, that she and my sister both said I shouldn't have had the gun.

I asked them what I should have done, and they restated that I shouldn't have had the gun.

Go figure.

My uncle got me interested when I was roughly 7 years old. He worked at a local sporting store since I could remember and had a fair collection of firearms and reloading supplies. Id say roughly 300+ sidearms and 100 long guns. I honestly think he came home with a new gun or two every week. Cant tell ya what brands they were as I was too small, but he put a few aside for me when I was 8 or 9. I can remember now seeing the lead bars stacked up like gold in fort knox and I used to think it was so cool. He searved in war and was a paratrooper, so he had some sweet stuff from that too... purple heart and bullet wounds... just some really neat stuff. When I was 10 he became very ill and passed away. No will = I didnt get what he had set aside for me... His sons had or may still have addictions and those guns were sold and used for such......... I WISH I had what he had now... Im sure there was history that Ill never see again.

All just a memory.............................

It is sad when there is no will...the same thing happened to me. All those memories someone else holds in their hands or just melted down. At least they can't take the memories away from ya.

My parents just don't get guns (they're European born). My interest arose out of an interest in military history and plans to go into the military or law enforcement. Neither happened (bad eyes).

Oh, and my parents tried to squash any interest in guns as a kid... my water pistols and cap guns always "disappeared" and my GI Joe warriors forgot to bring their weapons back from battle.

We had guns around the house,a few in the corner behind doors and a single shot .22 inside the screened back porch. It was used mainly to kill the fall hog and to take a few rabbits and squrriels for the pot. I had a brother 17 years my senior who joined the SC Highway patrol in 1963 after a stint in the USCG. He was an excellant pistol shot and quickly made the state pistol team.

He would come home for a visit at least monthly and I would get to fire his Model10 service revolver as much as I wanted. The state provided him with a generous supply of re-loaded wadcutters for practice and I shot my fair share of those. Thus began my love affair with all things Smith and Wesson at the tender age of 9.

We ( my retired state trooper brother and myself) plan too go to the range and shoot pistols and .22 lr rifles later this weekend if it warms up as forecasted. Still going strong after all these years.

The more I think about it the more I'm convinced heredity has a lot to do with it. I can never remember when I didn't love guns and got the toy guns and holsters as long back as I can remember. My grandfathers were both avid hunters but my dad had no interest whatsoever but he did plink a little from time to time. My son has no interest either but my 5 yr old grandson loves toys guns and watches the hunting shows with me every chance he gets. I guess it's skipped a generation each time.

For me it was my Dad. He grew up hunting, so I did too. I will say that the gun collection has grown tremendously since I came along. He had 5 when I was born. There's a few more now. He gave me my first gun for my 5th birthday (single shot 410).
He took the hunters safety course with me when I was 9. We studied that stuff like crazy. I just never stopped, I guess. I'm more of a "gun nut" than he is. I'm that way with most anything that interests me, though. Gotta know all I can. I love these things and love to shoot. My dads brother and his son are really good shots too. My 11 month old boy's got the bug, I think. Whenever he sees me with a gun he stops and watches. Fine by me!

Both my mother and father started me shooting. My father was the one that took my brother and I shooting, but my mother was always supportive of shooting, and enjoyed firearms. That goes back to my grandparents on both sides as well. I got out of guns when I got to the age where driving was more important, and sunk most of my time and money into my 1970 Chevy Nova. After a spell with cancer and my maternal Grandfather passing, I got back into shooting when I was handed down my Grandfather's last hunting rifle--a Ruger Ranch Rifle (Mini-14). He had around 35 firearms when he passed, but with 6 grandchildren, and about as many great-grandchildren they got spread out. I did buy a Winchester 22 semi-auto for my son to have when he gets old enough. In general, I treat firearms as an heirloomed past-time.

It's Hubby's "fault".

I'm very envious of you women that grew up with fathers/parents that took you to the shooting range. I knew very little, and was, truthfully, terrified of guns until my hubby showed me his work weapon a few years ago and suggested we get our concealed permits. I went along, just because I thought it would be wiser to learn a little something about it, and not be totally stupid-which I was big time-regarding firearms.

It took me a little more than a year after getting the permit to come around. (Yes, somehow, I gained a permit, being it was the first time I shot a "real-live" gun outside of a bb or paintball gun). Hubby was very patient, and said I had to decide for myself if I wanted to carry. After lots of soul searching and many readings of CorneredCat.com, and tons of research on women and weapons, well, here I am.

I am seriously grateful to all of you for letting me read and rattle on this forum in attempts to learn more.

Thumbs up

My husband also sparked my interest in firearms. He gave me a M60-18 for my birthday in 2007. Since last July, I have purchased a couple of J frames, a Colt 22 Auto. Wednesday I brought home a Diamondback. My ccw is a Ruger LCR.

Deputy Jack Weaver of the LA County Sheriff's Department. He was a family friend. My family, and several others, used to go camping in the desert around LA. Ten or fifteen trucks with camper shells, caravan to some spot and camp overnight. It was never an official campground. In those days there was just a lot of open space. Weaver always let me wear a pistol belt with a K-22. We'd shoot tin cans, watermelons, bleach bottles. Somebody had a clay target thrower and we'd shoot skeet. Mr Weaver taught me how to hit the moving clays with a revolver. He, needless to say, coached me a lot on my stance...

I was raised in a home with no real firearms. It was the 50's, Dad was a WWII veteran and Mom was a pre-war bride and pregnant with my older brother when Dad went overseas.

I had toy guns for as long as I can remember. I can't think of ever being without one. Blame it on the 1950's TV shows. If we weren't playing army, it was cops and robbers or cowboys and Indians.

My first real shooting experience was at scout camp. Then the USAF. It sort of took off after that. I never had the urge to hunt though.

My father. Not particularly because he's owned them all my life, and I've grown up with them, because neither is true. But my dad worked for gov and a guy he worked with was an agent. My dad is just a tech, but the agent has a lot of firearms and I guess my dad just finally decided to buy a gun. I shot it, and found a new hobby. My dad and I are still new to firearms really. I don't know what my grandpa's stance was on guns was or if he had any because he died when I was 14 and I didn't live close enough to get to know him all that well. I only saw him on holidays mostly. I do know he supposedly took my grandma to buy a gun once, and my grandma admits to having one, but I have never seen it or questioned her about it to see what she has. My dad owns 3 handguns and a .22lr rifle and I also own 3 handguns and a Mosin Nagant 91/30. I own a .308 rifle, but I am trying to trade it or sell it. It will probably be replaced by another handgun. Speaking of being replaced, I have a RIA 1911 on layaway. Ideally I will sell the rifle and buy the 1911, but if I trade it then it will just be another gun to add to my list.

My Uncle. Ever since he let me shoot his 03-A3 when I was about 9yo in the 50's. I always wanted one. Never did get one. I would have like to have inherited his as he was never married but his brother got all his firearms when he died at 47yo in the early 70's, and when he died his GF sold them all. Just shows if you have something to give to someone give it to them while your alive. My mother didn't like firearms and my father only had a .22 rifle which is all he was allowed to have with no ammunition and a old *** bulldog .38 pistol that was more dangerous to the shooter then anyone in front of it.

I think it was in the blood for me. My dad taught me how to shoot. His training was military textbook...not very fun in the slightest but good instruction nonetheless. He was a high power shooter in the Navy. My interest in firearms started well before I knew of his military service. They just fascinated me as soon as I knew what they were. Back in those days the elementary school libraries were full of military and firearm references. I read up on as much as I could get my hands on. From that early reading I developed a taste for military arms and their counterparts.

One thing that resonates is my dads description of shooting the 1911; nearly uncontrollable, difficult to master, etc. He had a hard time qualifying with it and was the laughing stock of one range evolution when he shot through and toppled the wooden target carrier. The anticipation of taming such a beast was nearly unbearable. It was the first centerfire pistol I fired and has been my favorite since. I'm sorry he wasn't around to see that anticlimactic result.

My brother and I were regular Expert shooters in the USMC with my brother getting "High Shooter" honors on one qual, thanks in no small part to a good start.

ETA: It has been an honor to pass what I can to my son, who starting at the age of four, has amazed me with his natural ability and professional attitude towards guns. He has a great start and I hope it continues to grow as a discipline and a hobby for him.

Growing up in the 50s I think westerns helped pique my interest but when I went to summer camp with the YMCA and found out I could take shooting lessons with a .22 Remington single shot bolt action, probably a 511 or 512, I was hooked. I'm the only one in my immediate family who enjoys guns and was on my own developing my interest.

It was me.

I grew up in a household of three shotguns. By the age of nine, I wanted to shoot on the school rifle team, and bought my own .22 rifle. Mom didn't like guns, but tolerated them. Saving money for that rifle built character in me, they said.

My Dad, other Vets and yes--JOHN WAYNE, started my interest--I then "carried the ball."

I voted "other". I was basically a self-starter.

My Father served during WWII. He landed in Normandy on D-Day, was in Bastogne when the Battle-of-the-Bulge began (he got out of there before it was encircled), he saw several Death Camps, etc.

So, we had several guns around the house, a captured P-38 & Radom (which are now in my possession), 2 other small-caliber cheap handguns, and a Savage .410/.22 O/U. The pistols were nothing more than mementos to my Father, and during one of our discussions he said he'd seen enough violence for a lifetime, and he didn't own anything that was worth killing over.

Anytime my Dad got the O/U out to shoot at a rabbit or groundhog, my Mom would make sure I was very far removed from the area. Her Father had committed suicide when she was 9 years old, and she didn't much care for guns.

Unfortunately, my Father never gave me any instruction in firearms, or ever offered any guidance in that direction. So, my first time holding or firing a gun was when I was 17 years old, in USAF Basic Training. I still remember how befuddled I was, and my surprise that I actually qualified (I still believe that someone else must have accidentally deposited some hits on my target).

It wasn't until several years later, when I was approximately 24 years old, when I began to look into firearms. It quickly developed into a major hobby. My Father was okay with it, and was interested in my acquisitions...but my Mother was unhappy, and said so for many years. Eventually, she came to accept that I knew what I was doing, and realized that the guns themselves weren't capable of spontaneously creating havoc.

I'm jealous of you all who had parents and/or other family members who guided you and encouraged you into the hobby. You're very fortunate!

Tim

To be perfectly honest the current administration has far more to do with my ongoing interest in firearms and firearm's rights than pretty much any thing else I can think of

A friend that a) has a carry permit and always carries and b) has extensive firearms training. It was obvious to me years ago he knew his stuff about guns.

A desire to learn how to protect my home caused me one day to ask him, "there's one of those gun shows this weekend. Can you go with me and help me pick out a pistol? I want to learn how to shoot."

Six years, five semi's and two revolvers later, here I am.

While dad raised me with guns I have had the intrest since before I can remember. Then along come "Duke". Ura "Duke" Duvall was about as old as my dad. I rented him a room around 1970 as he worked where I did but that was about a 100 miles from his home. He would go home about every third weekend and work tons of OT as I did. Duke was a big time collector of everything but especialy smith and wessons. Everytime he went home he would return with a huge satual of more handguns! He educated me more than anyone else. This guy even had volcanics etc. Lots of old west guns. Dukes brother in law owned king gun works, so duke had a lot of "in`s" and knew many gun people, writers etc. He also had guns wrote up in some of the magazines. I have/had a few I got from duke. He got some from me too!

TV and books, like most young boys I expect. My father's interest in firearms developed later in life, but when it did he jumped in with both feet. That cemented my interest too.

My parents were not gun people. I voted other because it was my wonderful Grandfather who introduced me to guns at a young age. He was a machinist who had a collection of Winchester and Marlin riles that always amazed me. I lived with my Grandparents in the summers growing up and had a lot of opportunity to shoot with Grandpa. I learned the basics from him and then honed the skills on the high school rifle team. All of those great rifles are now in my safe, some 60 years after I first saw them.

Post My Dad Sort Of

Being a refugee from the state of New Jersey shooting sports were difficult to pursue. Dad liked Trap shoots but did not hunt. I liked shooting at real birds not clay ones.
After moving to a free state, Florida, and the aftermath of Hurricane Andrew my gun thoughts turned to home/self defense. Getting a CCW too. Bill Clinton and the Brady Act did me in.
When the government says you shan't have a thing it just makes me more determined to get that banned thing.

My father taught me gun safety and took me and my brothers hunting as kids, and I think I got a in depth fondness for guns from the TV westerns.

As a child I had all kinds of cap guns.

The U.S. Army got me interested in the real thing.

Default Three people....

Me, Myself and I. I have zero gun heritage. My dad had a shotgun but I never saw it outside his closet. I did get BB guns for Christmas, and had a variety of toy guns, even a cool WWII style Thompson and a cool automatic from "The Man from Uncle" days. Most everything else was cowboy guns. My favorite was an 1895 Daisy BB gun. I loved that thing, spent a lot of time in the woods and shot up a 'tube' of BBs every few days.

I found out later my Dad had a break open .38 S&W and I was elected to find him some bullets for it.

Probably Barack Hussein Obama. Seriously. Let me tell...

Growing up in Los Angeles I became very interested in guns from maybe 6 or 7 YO. I spent summers at my grandfolks house in Salina, Kansas. Grandpa was the ticket agent at the Union Pacific Depot until he retired. We would fish the local rivers & lakes until it got "too stinkin' hot." Grandpa would have a nap and I would sit in the cool basement reading through many years worth of Field & Stream, Outdoor Life, Readers Digest. All the outdoors magazines had ads for guns, the Sears catalogs featured Ted Williams shotguns & such. By the time I was 10 I knew you needed to have Bullseye, Unique and 2400 powders.

On one of our fishing trips to Mulberry Creek outside of town I encountered a couple of guys shooting a Ruger Standard .22 pistol. They let me shoot a magazine & sent me on my way.

When I was about 14 or so a family friend took me along on a range trip and I was introduced to the Walther P38, Colt SAA and the Ruger Single Six.

That was about it until I joined the Navy in '73. My first four years out of A School were spent with USNMCB-5 where I met up with the venerable 1911 & the relatively newish M-16. Even bought my own rifle, a 10/22 in '77. It got stolen while I was on deployment.

That was about it. Fast forward to 2008. I had a Winchester 1300 Defender under the bed but nothing other than that.

After the election I figured I'd better get me a handgun before they were banned. After much research I got the Ruger KP90. It had some issues & had to go to Prescott. I found that I was uneasy not having a handgun next to the bed. Kind of sour on bottom feeders I figured I needed a wheelgun. Wound up with a Taurus 669 with 6" barrel. A pretty nice revolver for $300 OTD. It's served me well & I still have it.

By now I was reloading .45ACP, .38 & .357 on a Lee Classic Turret. My early obsession came in handy as I was able to get rolling pretty easily. A bit surprised that not much had changed. I started out on Bullseye & 2400. I knew to stay away from Unique.

THAT'S when I started hanging around gun stores... (cue dramatic music) My first S&W was a 6" Highway Patrolman.

And so on. The story is just too sad... My wallet cries.

So, I guess I can thank Barack Hussein Obama for my presently ongoing interest in the shooting sports.

Barack Hussein Obama. Sold more guns than Winchester & Ruger combined!
