Default Me, Myself and I

My Dad had a revolver and a shotgun and I never saw any of them fired. I've always had a love for finely tooled machinery. I had plenty of toy guns and a Daisy 1894 BB gun that I shot a big tube of BBs every few days through. I remember my first 'modern-looking' gun was a Man from Uncle gun, too.

Dad got me into guns, he had quite a nice collection going for a while. Then one of my cousins decided to end his life with a handgun, and my mother ordered all of dad's "out of the house." He kept one .22lr revolver, and his rifles. It wasn't till I was in my early 20's that I was inspired by a buddy of mine to pursue guns.

I checked "friend" because of my pal Petey, who thought that a guy who appreciated Czech motorbikes might like some Czech handguns to go with them. I shot them a little, and enjoyed the craftmanship of carefully made machines, but even then I did not develop a real interest in guns.

Then Minnesota passed its "shall issue" carry law. With a permit, no more hassle (relatively speaking) and no more delayed gratification. A guy could put his money down and take home his purchase. I bought a S&W revolver, a 5" Model 60. Had I known what I know now, I probably would have bought something else, but at least I realized the depth of my ignorance, and set out to educate myself, which led me to join this forum.

Of course, I looked at others, too, but this is the one I kept coming back to. The gentlemanly tone, and the depth and breadth of the knowledge here are incredible. This forum done more than any other source to foster and develop my interest in and knowledge of firearms.

Hey Fishslayer, I don't suppose one of those lakes was Kanopolis, was it? For us that was the best part of visiting Kansas in general!

As for the interest in firearms, definitely my dad. He initially bought a revolver for my mom to use for protection when he'd be away at work due to certain circumstances at the time. It was decided if a gun was to be in the house/camper then we were to learn safety and handling ASAP. He was the one responsible for teaching us and taking us out for practice and started me at about 6. (had a pellet gun prior to safely learn/demonstrate the safe handling aspect). Those trips to the desert and shooting with him are some of my best memories. They go along with learning to pilot the boat and ride motorcycles. He taught me all the fun stuff that I still love doing today! My mom may have been the reason for the first gun to enter the home but my dad instilled the interest/teaching of firearms that has stayed with me to this day.

I was self motivated. My Dad was a farmer and owned a Winchester 62 and a single-shot exposed hammer shotgun. Mom had a brother shoot his eye out with a BB-gun. Parents weren't shooters at all.

I started with cap pistols and Daisy Red Rider, then the Model 62 and a bolt action 410. Handguns were never in my childhood. Once I turned 18 and made my own money I've been on the slippery, gun-nut slope ever since.

A close friend of mine, Dick Metcalf, who encouraged me and challenged me to to know and understand handguns, and practice. And yes, he is still my friend.

My Grandfather introduced me to hunting, camping, fishing, shooting, etc... at a very early age. Without a doubt, his influence sparked my interest in firearms.

My father taught me at the age of eight the fundamentals of gun safety and to respect their potential dangers if misused. My father took me out for target shooting and hunting every chance he had.

Got the customary .22 rifle from my uncles and tolerant parents at age 10. A friend's much older brother had a Ruger .22 autopistol which I was allowed to shoot and salivate over. I promoted one of my own when I was about 16. Dad was a WWII vet and Border Patrolman, and my mother was raised in Chicago during Prohibition, so they took it all in stride.

Read a copy of Jeff Cooper's "Fighting Handguns" and really liked his good commonsense writing and sense of history. Saw my first 1911 not long afterwards and it was love at first sight. My Dad borrowed one for me to try out on Easter, 1959; a year later my parents bought it for $25 and gave it to me for Christmas. Among the photos of us shooting it is one of my mother holding it out there at arm's length, no earmuffs (not then invented) and shooting those old hardball loads! I still have that old gun.

Between the military and law enforcement guns have provided me a hobby and a livelihood and a way of life. It's been fun, and everybody in the clan is a shooter of one kind or another. They all hit up Grandpa the handloader when they need ammo.

I think I was born with an ingrained love for guns that was bound to come out at some point. I believe that we are all born with characteristics from both parents but also with some original and unique characteristics all our own that didn't come from anyone.

Neither of my parents had any particular interest in hunting or guns. Certainly not like I have. I never thought much about it but even as a small child I had a strong attraction for and interest in guns. I only had occasional opportunities to "plink" but never got any training or real experience until my military years. Small arms training from the Navy and the Marine Corps only whetted my appetite.

Back in civilian life I pursued the passion/fever as resources permitted. At first that was not much. Over time I got my feet under me and was able to add some nicer things to the pile. Now 11 years into my retirement and on SS and a small pension I'm at the point of negative growth. Now I'm just trying to hold onto what I've spent a lifetime accumulating.

I guess what the military gave me was exposure. Which fed the fire and then just like water flowing downhill things just naturally progressed. Time brought more and different guns and broadened my experience and thus my abilities. Now I have a modest assortment and I love and enjoy it but I gotta say the the trip was a great part of reaching this destination. I am jealous of the youngsters just starting out. Jealous of all the "firsts" they have in store for them in their futures.

I'm sorry I've been away from this forum for quite a while. I've been trying to learn how to just pick up a guitar and play it for so long I almost forgot about this post. I'm also getting into crafting guitars and repairing them. So many other things happened too, such as life in general. I'm so impressed at how this post grew and it's inspiring to say the least. Now I have to take the time to read all your posts. Thanks so much everyone. Bless You All. and Keep On Shoot'in.

Another grandfather who introduced us to bb rifle, at very early age. Huge treat going to grandparents house, and shooting bb gun in basement. Probably best memories of growing up. Then 22's, then bought us a shotgun when we turned 12 to go small game hunting.

Course he also started putting a little whiskey in the Shirley temples he made us at the bar, just to quite us down on the ride home ya understand.

Neither of my parents had any interest in guns whatsoever. I developed my interest I believe from all the 50s cowboy and WW II movies and TV programs.

My father and my grandmother. Yup, my grandmother. They were immigrants and both educated me in the Second Amendment. Grandma's brothers were partisans against the Nazis. That truly had an effect and influence on me.

As I stated earlier I told you it was my father that got me started with hunting but my wife reinforces my gun buying habits. She supports me having a hobby.

That must be the truth because I can play a mighty sweet tune on my AR-15. Out of 50 rounds 38 solid bulls eyes and nothing outside the 9-ring and 50 yards with iron (A-2) sights and 70 year old eyes.

My granddad. He was raised in Mississippi and came to Texas in his teens in the late 1800's. Taught me how to hunt squirrels, dove, quail, turkey, and ducks.

Beat the great Ad Topperwein (Winchester Exhibition shooter) in Cisco Texas. He won a case of shotgun shells for his effort.

He said shooting a shotgun was like throwing rocks at a moving target. It took me years to know what he was talking about.
He stood erect, eyes forward, brought the gun down to the target and swung past it and fired and then follow thru.

Granddad and I shared the same first and last name

Dwight

I can see the motivation there, glad your ok and to hear someone took initiative to save you and your friend.

At the age of 11 I had an instance of someone who pulled me over the day after Christmas while I was riding my bike over to my uncles. The caught me while making a turn on the sidewalk and made like he was going to ask me directions. As soon as he pulled over and I got near the passenger side window he pulled what looked to me like a blued S&W snub revolver and said get in the car. In a split second I took off and rode that bike like I stole it to my Uncles and told them. I don't what happened after that but I can say that my knowledge of guns at a very young age helped me make that split second decision.

TV also influenced me at a young age, I'm 61 now. Dad was just a bow hunter and that's what we did. He did have an old Savage single shot shotgun which I used on small game especially after I started hunting pheasants after I got an English Setter on my own at age 14.
That shotgun and a bow were enough though until I went into the service and shot the M-16 and S&W Model 15. It was the 15 especially that got my interest in guns and I started buying handguns as I could afford them. That branched out into long guns later and more hunting. I've been hunting and buying guns ever since and have to give the AF credit for starting my real interest in guns.

My dad was a firm believer that a man only needed three firearms:
- a .22 rifle,
- a "big"rifle (centerfire, .243 or larger); and
- a shotgun.

He started me shooting at age six, but my ongoing interest came from other sources.

- My cousin Jeff let me shoot his S&W Model 36 (his back up gun at the time) and that got me interested in pistols. He also exposed me to Bullseye competition at one of the department shoots.

- Sergeant Major Beam got me into Hi Power Rifle completion, and I continued that later in civilian competition and DCM sponsored matches.

- I got started in tactical rifle shooting during a High Power shoot when a tactical rifle match was scheduled the same weekend at the same range.

- The people I met there got me interested in collecting surplus firearms.

Wow, another old thread back from the land of the lost. Actually, I'm glad this one was resurrected so that I could put my 2 cents in.

My father was the one that inspired my love of shooting and also reloading. I must have been around 7 or so (maybe even 6) when he gave me my first rifle, which is an old Marlin (I think) bolt action 22 and cut down the stock so that I could actually shoot it. After a year or 2 I graduated to a 22 Hornet and he then taught me how to reload for the Hornet. He wasn't a pistol person but had a High Standard 22 auto that we messed around with and I found that I liked pistols a lot and when I turned 18 I bought my first pistol, which was a nickel Model 27-2 with a 5" barrel. Since then the collection of rifles and pistols has grown a bit.

Default My Dad had a pistol and...

... a shotgun, but I never saw them and he never brought them out. He did get me BB guns for Christmas though. We talked very little about shooting for fun or sport.

My Mom was afraid of guns, she was of the old school knowing people that got killed 'cleaning their guns' and she saw a guy get shot and killed in her little home town and she was looking for a friend when she saw that some relative had died while 'cleaning his gun'. She left and never told anybody.

My bro had BB guns, too, and joined the Air Force and shot a gun for rifle training, once. Then later I found out he had tried some skeet. A friend had a .22 rifle I shot a few times.

So, I had no gun people around me. On my own without any prompting, when I bought a house I bought a gun along with it and started shooting some, then a guy in the gun store said I should try a Lee Hand loader. Then I met some adults that were real gun people. When I found out that there were people around like me, things picked up. A couple of friends showed me how to work a reloading press and the rest is history, still being made.

Don't know how I became interested in guns. Neither my dad or grandfather ever hunted. I did receive a Rem. Mod.33 single shot when I was 13 from Mom. Don't know the story & a Win High Wall 38-55. Have passed them along to my son & grandson. Have enjoyed many hunts over the years with friends & buddy's. Now at advanced age I hunt off my front porch.

no one in my family ever had a gun. i was the weird person who preferred toy guns to barbies.
i don't think my parents were much surprised when at 16 years old, i walked in the door with a used marlin i bot with my own money, but without permission.
i think i was the only girl in that city who had a gun.
2 years ago i got my first pistol because i was tired of running in the house to get the rifle.
i fell in love right then. someone who knew guns told me i had to shoot 10,000 rounds to be competent. with it.
been shooting 200_300 rounds/week ever since.
i'm competent.

Always had a shotgun around when growing up, but most of our hunting was with bows. Nobody in the family really had an interest in guns, particularly handguns. I caught the bug all by myself around the age of 30. I got a late start.

My dad would take me up in the hills after we got the yard work done on most Saturdays. He had an H&R .22 LR revolver with a 4" barrel and plastic grips. I'd save all our tin cans for those Saturday outings. Then bring them home full of holes and show my mom.

That lead to my attending hunter safety and eventually my first .22 bolt action Winchester single shot. The rest is history...

I agree with Pete Driver's post. Although my dad influenced me greatly in shooting, all those television westerns drove my attention to handguns. So where dad was a long gun enthusiast who never owned a handgun until I bought him one, I went mainly into handguns.

My G.I. Joe when I was about 10 yo. Joe had a M1 carbine, a M1 Garand and bayonet, a M3 submachine-gun, a 1911 Government model, a BAR with bipod, and a Browning M1919 machine gun with a tripod. Add to that an unlimited supply of imaginary ammunition. He was very generous and let me play with them as much as I wanted. Who was responsible for your ongoing interest in Firearms?

My father was a occasional rabbit hunter, he owned a field grade Ithaca 16 gauge shot gun. He did go deer hunting a couple times, he borrowed my Uncles pre 1898 Model 94 32.40 rifle.( I now own that gun) So I knew a little but did not get my love of guns from my father.

Our family was very close to our neighbors that lived down the street (40s to 1960) The man there was a serious gun person. I spent a lot of time there with them. He cast his own bullets, loaded his own ammo, carved a couple rifle stocks for his own use and hunted or fished as often as he could.

I got my love of shooting from him, (rifles/shotguns) he was not a handgun person, but I figured that one out on my own.

I will have to give most of the credit for my love of firearms to my dearly departed grandfather. Sure my dad took me shooting a .22 rifle now and then, but my his father, my grandfather, was a retired cop. We would often go shooting, and he really got me into the love of it. He taught me how to shoot a handgun when I was a kid, truly a step up from those old .22 rifles. Of course, before I was allowed to shoot on the range, he spent about a week teaching me the Weaver stance and dry firing his old PD issue Model 64 until I fully understood how to work a DA trigger. He also taught me how to shoot a .357 Magnum, a 3" Model 65 - his detective issue gun. That 3" .357 was quite a handful for kid but I learned quick. After that I started shooting his P220 and was suprised that the big fat .45 ACP was easier to shoot than the .357 K-frame.

He also made me clean all the guns after every range trip. Everytime I open a bottle of Hoppe's 9 it takes me back to his workshop, and him looking over me - can't say that for the new brands. As he was a former watch commander, he would give a proper inspection after cleaning. I think I had that old Model 64 cleaner than when she left Springfield!

When I was just a pup my Dad was a section hand on the railroad.
We lived in half a section house by the tracks in a little burg. Sometimes
in the evening my Dad would take his .22 and go for a walk down the
tracks. He would come back with cotton tails, which was a good source
of our protein in those days.
When I was six, seven, & eight, I would get to go with him occasionally
on his walks. Then I finally got to shoot the .22. I was hooked.
By age 10 I had my own. A single shot .22 rifle. More fun than all
of them I have, and have had, since.
