Default Dose EVERYTHING have to match?

I have been in the market for a cargo trailer and have been doing my homework. I had found a 7' x 16' Tandem Axle, with Electric Brakes On Both Axles, V Nose, Double Doors,30' Side Door, 2 5/16 Hitch and 2 Interior Lights for $3,000 (great deal). Well, I ended up getting one that my wife wanted. Well... its not so much that SHE wanted it, but if I were to get one it had to "match". So here it is, the same 7'x16' TransHaul as above only in black (the color cost me an extra $150.00) So I got it for $3,150.

Thumbs up

It's OK, I've paid more than $150 to look cool!
It'll look good travelin' down the hwy behind that Pathfinder.

Nice set up.

Of course it does. I've seen custom horse-trailers color-keyed to the tow vehicle.

That's a nice set-up!

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

I'll bet the final drive in that path finder is less or higher than 3:5 and with the "tow/haul" buttton engaged she'll never kick out of 3rd gear. Keep her full of good oil and coolant. Might want to stop every other gas station just to top off as well.

I didn't know they made a 2 5/16th inch hitch in metric. ;-)

I'm not knocking your choice of vehicles or trailers....just the combination. Even with the tandem brakes it's gonna be a fairly dangerous pull. Especially around semis or gusty cross winds. Good luck and let us know how it pulls and what your mileage is.

:-)

No, it doesn't have to match. But for $150, you (or your wife) made a wise decision. Great looking rig!
And at a great price (I've been looking too-haven't found one as nice as yours for that price)

That is what I was thinking. I paid more than that for my 7 X 14 plain white. The V-nose will help a lot with gas milage and towing.

Priceless......

Paying a $150 extra to NOT have to hear about it in the future. Good call.

The Pathfinder will tow 6000 lbs, but I will keep well below that. I plan to use it for storage in the short term (renovations are ongoing on my new house) and as a hurricane evacuation rig in the long term. The trailer weighs around 2200lbs (I'll be having it weighed empty soon) so I could easily get another 2000 lbs in there safely while towing with the pathfinder.

For those times when I need to max it out, I have a 1994 Chevy Z71 that I bought new in 1993. It still runs great but it looks like ****. Any bets on how long it takes my wife to say that I need to paint it? Black of course.

Any chance of a refund?

Great looking rig and, yes, they should match.

"matching"....well.....NEXT time you have to insure you have a series of 'matching' revolvers....in 2-3-4-6-8" lengths....and other 'matches' of blued, stainless...etc....

re: Z71: I had that exact truck (in silver) for 11 years towing a 4500+ dry tall RV trailer 23' long all over the PNW. My RV was a tall one that caught all the passing 18 wheelers and made wind buffeting an unpleasant issue.

And yes....that $150 paint was a GREAT tactical move!!!

The first thing you should do is put a weight transfer hitch on it. I use a 1985 Monte Carlo SS to haul a 24 ft. boat that goes 5000 lbs. on the trailer, a weight transfer hitch makes a HUGE difference in stability when hauling a trailer. Fact is that I ocassionally used to borrow a Dodge Ram 1500 to haul the boat and the Monte is more stable than that truck was hauling the load with a dead weight hitch.

I'll also tell you that a weight transfer hitch has to be set up properly to gain it's full effect on stability. The key to doing this is to make sure that the frame of the tow vehicle is perfectly level when the weight bars are set. This distributes an equal loading on both front and rear. To much set in the spring bars can overload the front and reduce rear wheel waiting, with causes traction problems and also make jackknifing a possibility. Too little set in the spring bars will make the steering feel over sensitive with a "twitchy" feel, which is why I went to the weight transfer system for my Monte, it was VERY twitchy trying to haul with a dead weight hitch.

Good news is that it's simple to add more set to the spring bars by taking up one or two links. However, don't go more than 2 links, if you shorten the chains too much it's cause problems and the potential for damage when turning. Idealy, you want to set the angle on the hitch so that a proper set uses the very last link on the chains. However, for a cargo trailer where the weight center may vary, it's probably best to set up for the second link so you can take up or drop one link depending on load position. Just remember, when you get to the third link stop there or make darned sure you don't do ANY tight turning.

BTW, if you do have to use a short chain, you can do this for highway travel, however, you'll have to release the chains before making any tight turns, otherwise you can bend your hitch. In this case, pull off when you exit the highway, pull the spring bars and keep your speed under 45 when hauling deadweight.

You'll also want to get some clamp on extension mirrors if your pathfinder doesn't have dual position mirrors, makes it a lot easier to see what's behind you.

Finally, plan on buying new tires every 5 or 6 years, no matter what the tread indicates. Old trailer tires get full exposure to UV and the rubber degrades. So, keep the tires in good shape or you'll be on the side of the road with a blow out. On one trip my brother tried to get an extra year out of the tires on his boat trailer, he had 3 out of 4 tires blow out on the trip. Fortunately, he did have 2 spares but when the third went he had to leave the boat, find a tire, and then come back to hook up.

PS; I've learned about towing heavy loads by making mistakes. Nothing that caused an accident but hauling that boat with a dead weight hitch with the Monte was a white knuckle experience. Now, with the weight transfer I can cruise one handed at 68 mph in OD and relax for the drive. BTW, the engine isn't close to stock, it's a GMPP HT383 and the car is a blast to drive when I'm not towing.

Thanks for the tip(s) scooter. That sounds like a great idea for when I want to tow with the Pathfinder. I'm a relative newby to towing (I've only towed a car hauler three times and a small trailer twice for over 1000 miles) so I can use all the knowledge y'all can give.

Another method of load leveling that has worked well for me is to use Timbren load levelers. I towed an 18ft dovetail trailer with a good sized tractor/bushhog outfit on it. Until I put load levelers it was white knuckle but after installation towing was a day at the beach.

I've got a lot of experience towing boats cross country and I can tell you this-I think the 6000 rating for the Pathfinder is a bit on the optimistic side- Once you tow that thing with your Chevy-you ain't gonna want to tow it loaded with the Pathfinder. I've got the big Suburban that I tow my Whaler with (trailer w'boat and gear weighs out at 3,850 lbs as per scales at the West St. Mary Trash transfer center). I tried towing it with my wife's Trailblazer XL with the V-8 and "6000 lb towing capacity" and I'll never do that again unless I absolutely have to. I thought the car was going to have a heart attack or stroke towing the boat up the High rise bridge at Lake Charles on I-10. My general rule of thumb is to never tow anything over 3000 lbs with anything less than a fullsized vehicle packing a full size V-8. Doesn't have to be the BIG mamma V-8 but it shouldn'f be the litle one either. I've got the 5.3 and it does fine.
FWIW I think you got a good deal on the trailer-it's a nice one.
