Nice find this morning- Whitetail bones!
I thought you would appreciate what my Labrador Bailey and I found this morning on our walk. Bailey found the left side and as I was walking over to pick it up I said to myself; the right side has got to be close by. Not 30 feet away was the other side.
It is an 11 point with 21” long main-beams. The right side had a 7th point but was broken off. I did a quick score on the Boone & Crocket website and it scored 125 and 4/8 but when you add in the deductions because of differences side to side it scores 137 and 2/8. I only estimated an inside spread of 13” so this is really conservative. It might have gone close to 145-150 live score if the spread was bigger. I just might have to have these mounted.
Oh Yea, here's a picture of my shed hunting dog Bailey too!
Are you guys shed hunters? Any specifc methods you use!

It is always nice to see that a buck with a lot of potential survived another deer season . . . especially if you found the sheds in an area you hunt!
Cool find!
I found the right shed of the same buck two years straight before taking him the next year. Both sheds were within 100 yards of the other . . . and within about 130 yards from where I took him during the rut of 1996.
Amazingly, you can put the two right antler sheds against his rack today and they are all identical in shape . . . just the size gets larger each year.
Again, cool find!

You don't "add in" the deductions, you deduct them. So, whatever the gross score, it is diminished by subtracting any beam-to-beam, point-to-point discrepancies. If you found deductive differences amounting to 12 & 2/8, from the gross score of 125 & 4/8, the net score would be 113 & 2/8, which I think is to seriously shortchange this specimen. It's of course impossible to accurately impute an inside spread, but 13" for this antler set is very conservative, I think, and this rack would likely have scored even higher than you estimated. Want a definitive score? --- check out the quirky Burkett trophy scoring system, with inside spread not a critical factor...
The former Burkett scoring system is now adminsitered by exoticwildlifeassociation.com.

Nice find!
Sadie came in last year with what I thought was a bone in her mouth but it was a single spike from a yearling.
The local deer still have their antlers on and they haven't started shedding them yet.

Great find Stonecove! I plan the annual walk myself soon. I look every year but to no avail.
As per my earlier post, the deer around here are getting ready to shed theirs. I'll keep you posted if and when I could be so lucky!!

A friend and I spend alot of time looking for sheds in the spring. We even look while we are supposed to be turkey hunting. It is kind of like finding a needle in a haystack. All we do is walk tree rows and check around fence crossings to find them.

Thanks for the replies.
JKC To answer your question its score was 137 2/8 but with deductions it netted 125 4/8. Sorry I said it wrong in my first posting.
After finding a complete set, now every stick that pokes up through the snow looks like an antler tip!!!!!!!!!

Nice find. Strictly a guess, but I think you would be safe in estimating 17" to 18" on the spread, jmo.

Thanks Blindref, Bailey is my baby. She's 18 months old and we planned to breed her but she has allergy issues that I don't want to pass on. Her daddy was in the Wesminster dog show in 2009 (didn't place but he was there and is an American and Canadian Champion. She is a retrieving machine too. Hardest charging dog I have ever owned and has been a challange to me as a trainer. I can't break her of her favorite pastime-- eating deer poop. Really gets me going. HOWEVER, she does not chase deer which is good!
FatTom, yea I think you are right, 18" inside spread is more like a natural look. That would bring the score to 143 & 2/8" which is a really nice score. Regardless, he's is a hell of a nice deer and I have decided to get back into bow hunting next season so I can have a chance at him. (No gun hunting where I think he lives, just bow; but I already have the farmers permission for next year! The farmer said he has seen him repeatedly!!!!!)

Nice set of horns there. I'm not an antler hunter, but I've found several through the years while out woods bumming early in the year. Gotta love those labs!

Hrm nice, but as a Granduncle said "you can't eat antlers" so I never could understand the fascination most hunters have with them.
I shoot something it's ether a varmint or dinner.

Well at least Bailey isn't bringing up the rest of the deer, piece by piece, like my Golden Retriever was last week... Somebody lost a deer in the woods by my pasture and Dusty's found it.
