I like being a crusty old fart and the thing about magnums and engine blocks reminded me of 2 funny stories. A friend of mine was playing too close to his red belly Ford and shot the engine. A .357 will knock a hole in a red belly Ford engine. In the 60's a friend was telling me he thought the tales about a .357 knocking a hole in an engine was a lie. We didn't have an engine but he had a complete transmission for a DeSota so we shot it. A .357 will knock a hole a hole in a DeSota trans. Expensive lessons but humorous later when you think about them. Larry

I wonder if there is any weapon or ammo. he would actually like or approve of? I have Berettas, Bersas, Sigs, S&W's and they are all a bit different but I like them all and not any of them any more in-accurate than me. Hope he finds something he will like someday!!!!!!!!

I think he was making fun of us and himself.....funny stuff I especially liked the Glock analogy. I think he was right on about the 357 Sig?????Why?? A super penetrater in a pressurized airplane...Not good!

I especially nodded my head in agreement about snub nosed .357 revolvers causing as much pain on the giving end as the receiving end!

The piece on guns and the followup on calibers was written by Marko (The Munchkin Wrangler) Kloos - the munchkin wrangler. - for his blog. It is written tongue-in-cheek. I don't believe the airplane bit was him.

I've met Marko and had the opportunity to shoot with him. He's a gracious host and great storyteller, and just a great guy to have a drink with. I'm honored to call him a friend.

I mean really-by any objective standard what we collect and salavate over is pretty lame in the great scheme of things, but anyone who says so from the outside we swarm like a bunch of angry hornets. In today's world, objectively, who really NEEDS 8 357's 2 44's 5 22's 2 .38's 2 9mm's 1 .45, 6 shotguns of various gauges 4 rifles of various calibers and thousands of rounds of ammo.?????? I mean...besides me

Caje, I thought I needed all those things once upon a time. Then I lost them all in a horrible boating accident (I really don't like to talk about it ... poor Buddy...) and haven't replaced them yet. Life is different, but not bad.

What I find both amusing and sad is how many people fail to recognize humor & satire in writings like this one.

The satire is directed not at the guns & ammo we choose but the irrational personal opinions often associated with them.

This is not a serious discussion of the merits and failings of various guns and cartridges. It is a humorous poke at the individuals that hold these views.

Similar articles are often written on just about every hobby or subject imaginable. Ford vs Chevy - Harley vs Sport Bike - Sailboat vs Powerboat and so on. And even as funny as these witty writings can be sometimes, it is more amusing to see people who fail to see the satire and post comments that reinforce the sterotype.

You will notice that he did not include the 44 SPL or the M1, or Springfield. To have done so would have shown his total lack of seriousness and objectivity.

I kinda agree with some of it but did not know I was crusty.

I like my s&w revolvers, the 1911, the m14(not the m1a), the g3 was heavy I like it but the charging handle was a stupid design. The ak47 was totally redesigned by the Russians at izmash the saiga ak/akm sportier is one check of a great semi auto rifle in 223/308. It's more accurate in the American calibers than the Russian calibers. Now the 303 Britt Enfield has one of the fastest, slickest bolt actions even on today's market and standards. I'm a crusty old frat ok I know my place in life. But what gun does he consider good or like? I never judge people nor the guns they own.
I feel someone has to own them, better them then me. I don't consider my guns the best for everyone but I don't force it on people. I go my own way, walk my own path. I never thought of myself as old crusty.

It would take a considerable number of .357 holes to seriously impact the pressurization of a jetliner.

But as for the quoted article, he obviously was having a hell of a lot fun writing it. Some of his off-the-wall comparisons were pretty clever. If his tongue were any farther into his cheek it would emerge from his ear.

It did kind of reinforce how glad I am to be one of those crusty geezers who likes revolvers. It's kind of a badge of don't-give-a-damn-what-you-thinkness. I enjoy that in my old age.

I'm also happy to learn that this whippersnapper packs a revolver...

I enjoyed that and I agree with all of it except for the definition of a S&W revolver.

This follows the trend of writing books, mostly biographies, that avoid rehashing old material by not saying one good thing about their subject.

I see it's time to trot this thing out again. :-) I wrote this several years ago for another venue. Apologies in advance to the easily offended. :-D

If military rifles were ladies, what would their personalities be like? Here are a few ideas.

Krag: Weird old Scandinavian lady down the block. Odd, but interesting. Not interesting enough to dally with, though.

SMLE No. 1 Mk III: English matron. A bit worn, but impeccable manners and taste. Comfortable. Strangely … well, British.

98k Mauser: Stern German lady who came to the States after the War. Out of style and doesn't care. Has forgotten more about adversity than you'll ever know. Takes no guff from anybody.

'03 Springfield: Classy older woman. Sleek and attractive, if a little on the angular side. Can handle almost anything, but intolerant of small errors on your part. Will smack you when you screw up.

M1917 Enfield: Under-appreciated spinster. Somewhat awkward; wears "sensible" shoes. Big ears detract from her appeal, but otherwise relatively easy to get along with.

M1 Garand: All-American country girl. Corn-fed, full-figured, and not at all shy about it. More complex than she at first appears, but easy-going and dependable none the less. Will stand by you for the long haul.

M1 carbine: Barmaid at your favorite tavern. Cute as a button and lots of fun, but not to be taken too seriously.

SKS: Communist-Bloc peasant girl. Petite, wiry, and a little funny looking to Western eyes. Accustomed to neglect and abuse, but tough as nails because of it. Not quite exotic, but appealing in a foreign sort of way.

AK: Younger Communist-Bloc peasant girl. Shorter and more muscular than her older sister. Fun in a crude way; not really suited to polite company. You try to sneak her back to the States in your seabag.

H&K G3: German philosophy student with no time for the real world. Pioneered the all-black look because nothing else works for her. Overweight, overbearing, and generally over-rated; lacks the toughness of the previous generations. Hard to get rid of.

FN-FAL: Belgian foreign-exchange student. Seems really strange at first, but grows on you. You miss her when she goes back home.

M14: California girl. Pretty and she knows it, but that big magazine on her slender build makes you wonder if maybe Mother Nature hasn't had a little help from a good cosmetic surgeon. Versatile and has a good heart.

XM16E1: Your buddy's 18-year-old kid sister. Has no clue what she's about yet, but strangely appealing none the less. You know this is a bad idea.

M16A2: Modern American female executive. Sophisticated and urbane; owns her own condo, BMW, and a fluffy cat. Excellent within her narrow areas of professional expertise, but otherwise nearly worthless.

M4 carbine: Slinky little thing with a penchant for racy outfits. Extremely flexible and a great deal of fun under the right circumstances, but not the one to take home to meet your mom.
