Gun4Fun sent me some grips to rehab better than a year ago. One pair had some damage to the base and Tim also wanted the perimeter of the butt reduced in size. While modifying the perimeter, I screwed up and got into the checkering on one panel. I sat there mad at myself at stared at the ruined grips. I got on the phone with G4F.........Tim was very cool about it and let me off the hook. I ate the ruined grips for other work to be done for Tim. I was relieved big time and threw them into the "project" box for another time.

Six months pass........
I decide to do a "VM custom smooth target" with the ruined grips. About two hours into my modifying and decheckering, I'm using a rat-tail file on the front strap - I go too DEEP and BREAK thru the wood and SCREW UP THE SAME grips a second time! At this point the grips are thrown across the garage and now going into the kindling box for the fireplace.

About two weeks ago.......
I stumbled onto the ruined speedloader target grip panels (I cant throw away anything as I'm a Packrat).
I sit at my workbench staring at the pretty grains of the Goncalo Alves and the lightbulb goes off in my brain ..........I'm going to give these Baby's one more shot.
Let's go smaller and make custom palm swell magnas!

They finally are finished after more than a year and a few attempts. They couldn't be normal magna shaped on the top because of the speedloader cutout of factory grips.

I had the Perfect Modified Snubby to put them on - my nickel 1917!

Phew!!!! Thought you were talking about MY grips.;)

How'd they taste? :)

AWESOME result.

Well if you're gonna screw sumthin' up, that's a pretty good way to do it.

Nice job.

Those grips are just plain sweet and I'll bet they feel great in the hand. I'm in awe.

so VM when are you going to do checkering? I have that set of mustangs you refinished for me begging for a custom checker job

Now you got me thinking. Maybe the checkering should be masked off with a liquid rubber compound before starting.

I like all the pairs I've gotten from Mike. Pretty wood ,fun for shooting ,,and different.

Regards ,, Allen
