Default CENTURYLINK/EMBARQ DSL QUESTION

Hello
I have been trying to get DSL here for years. They called yesterday and said that it was now available.
They said they would rent me the equipment for 5.00 a month (modem/router).
I want to buy my own, but I cannot find any information on the web site.
They told me that they use a Westell 327 modem/router combo. Well, I just searched, and there are 4 models from that manufacturer. Some are made for Bell south, some for Verizon.
They are B90327W15-06, C90327W30-06, D90327W11-06, D90327W15-06
Anyone here know which version of this unit will work with Centurylink/Embarq?
I called them today, and they had no information, just Westell 327.
Any other units compatible, like a separate modem and router?
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I got DSL from Embarq about 2-3 yrs ago. They (Embarq) supply and maintain the modem free and have replaced it once for no cost. It is a Embarq 660 Series Modem.
Since I wanted wireless operation in my home, I went to Best Buy (Office Depot, Staples okay) and got a LinkSys Wireless G Broadband router for about $100. This has worked very well for me.
At this moment, the download speed on my notebook computer is 1.49 Mbps, and Upload speed is 0.47 Mbps. If you want to use NetFlix and watch movies wirelessly on your tv, you may need to upgrade to more like 5 Mbps which is an additional monthly cost, according to NetFlix. I do NOT know anything more than I just told you. I'm not a techie at all.
Good luck to you. The DSL is good for net-browsing and email.

+! or Ditto
Exactly what I did. I have the faster 5 Mbps and bought the Linksys wireless 24GHz broadband. They probably have faster routers now but this one works fine in my house

Thank you for the replies.
When I talked to Embarq/Centurylink yesterday, they told me that they do not sell the equipment, they just rent/lease it to you. I tried to get it for free, but no go. They even charge for the line filters now, which they never did before.
They did not even mention just the modem, only the combo.
I imagine that I could just find the modem and add the wireless router like you mentioned.
They only have 3 plans now, they only have the below 1 Mbps speed, the 1.5 Mbps speed, and the up to 10 Mbps speed.
I guess that the 5 Mbps is not available now, but people still have it. I would like to get the 5 Mbps.
Has anyone ever tested their speeds with this tool. I wonder if it is accurate.

I have Embarq and use a 660 series modem which they furnished. I am unable to get even up to 1 Mbps due to my distance from their terminal.
I did not ask for a router and currently have no need for one.

Did you specifically ask for a wireless router?
I test my speed frequently using this tool; Internet Performance and Speed Test
I just ran the test results 722kb-----------------it’s better than dial-up.

Not very close to my tester.
Your method gave 1294.4 Kbps, which is ~ 1.29 Mbps
My method gave download speed of 1.80 Mbps.
Couldn't tell you which is more accurate.
Here is my link, which I got from folks here who were servicing my electronics.

I ran both of the tests that were posted.
Mine is 1440 on one and 1820 on the other, that is pretty good.
Even the link I posted for the speed gave me a 1269.
I had not tested mine in a long while, the last time I tested. it was 768. Something must have happened as I have noticed lately that it seems much faster.
I am using Sprint wireless now.. I posted this thread because I am considering going to DSL with Embarq.
With Sprint wireless, I have a 5 gig limit per month, with DSL it is no limit.
I wonder now if the 1.5 speed that was thinking of going with will be as fast as what I have now.
