Kinda OT, browser question for Mr IT Guy or Firefox folks
I recently had to reinstall Firefox, I lost all my bookmarks (yes my fault). Anyway, does anyone know where Firefox stores the bookmarks on the hard drive? I looked and searched and used the help feature but can not find any info. They are not in the Firefox program file that I can see?
On MS IE they are under Favorites.
I have a external hard drive with a complete backup so I was trying to restore them from my back up drive.
I am lost and can not find my way, where is the Lounge
Thanks for any help.

Sorry, I have no clue. You'll probably get more help in The Lounge.

Recovering Your Firefox Bookmarks
Copy/pasted from elsewhere:
* This is documented elsewhere, but perhaps comes across as too nerdy for some. If you're using Windows XP, recovering from a crash or whatever, and find that your Firefox bookmarks (and bookmarklets and bookmark toolbar) have disappeared, here's what to do:
- Find your profile in c:\Documents and Settings\[your XP user name]\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles
- There should be a subfolder there called bookmarkbackups. Find the most recent bookmarks html file in there (usually with a date after the 'bookmarks' bit.
- Copy it to somewhere safe and rename the existing one bookmarks.html.
- Copy it to the default profiles folder (up one level from the bookmarkbackups folder, deleting the existing bookmarks.html file.
- Close Firefox if it's running and relaunch it. Your old bookmarks should be restored.
* An easier way is to find file as above in ....\profiles (bookmarks-2009-04-27.json) from old disk and copy back to same location on new disk, go to browser bookmarks then organise bookmarks (ctrl shift b) import and backup then restore your file will be there, restore this and confirm (this will overwrite existing ones) original bookmarks returned

I went to docs and settings under my name but there is no "application data" only the * icon for Windows Favorites which are still there. So I have those but none of the ones I made using Firefox.

In there you will find something like this:
Mozilla\FireFox\Profiles\ gibberish.default\bookmarkbackups
Then use the info in my fist post above. Should get your bookmarks back.

Sorry I have no Application data file under docs and settings and can find nothing for Mozilla Firefox. I searched all program files.
Thanks for your help though. I can survive without them.

Give me a day to look at this (or until somebody who knows the answer off the top of their IT head). Here are some thoughts:
a) In Firefox, you should be able to import bookmarks from Internet Explorer, if you have IE installed, too. The 'import/export' choices should be under the Files menu in Firefox.
b) Open Windows Explorer, go to 'Tools' then 'Folder Options' then 'View' and put a check in the box beside "Show hidden files and folders". You should be able to see the sub-directory that you are looking for after that box is checked.
Stay tuned for more info.

Chris is absolutely on the money.
You have to be able to view the hidden files/folders to see that "application" folder. I've had to search out this folder several times on different machines, so it's fresh in memory!
You shouldn't have a problem if you follow his advice.

Another way to find them is to use search. Start, Search, Files and Folders then enter Bookmarks. You will probably have to have View Hidden Files and Folders enabled to find them this way also. I'm surprised that you lost the bookmarks by reinstalling Firefox. They should not be removed when uninstalling that program. I have done it, with a back-up disk containing bookmarks on hand just in case, and Firefox found the old bookmarks.

Well, that certainly makes a difference!. Yes, now I have the file. I am only looking on my current C drive but now know how to find them on my external plug in drive.
Now I need to reconnect my backup drive and find those missing bookmarks and import them.
I have all the bookmarks from IE but lost the ones made since I switched to Firefox.
Long story short,
I had a major problem with my IP provided e mail and it kept shutting down Firefox. When I reinstalled Firefox I did not check mark save all settings/bookmarks and also deleted the program file to have a clean install.
So once I have the book marks opened on my external drive how do I import them direct to Firefox or should I save them to my C drive first?
Thanks!

Open up the source file, i.e., the file on the external drive, and in a parallel window, the destination file location on your hard drive.
All you have to do is right click the file/folder, and drag that folder into the same location in the "new" install of Firefox destination. When you finishing dragging, release the right mouse button, and it will give you the option to copy or move.
Select copy, and your original source file will stay put, and the replica will be on your hard drive, in the location you sent it to.
Next time you open Firefox, your bookmarks should show up as normal.
