Default I haven't laughed this hard in a long, long time.

Found this gem at AR15.com, felt it must be preserved for future generations. His thread title was...

"Cracked 686"

If he still wants to get rid of that cracked frame 686 tell him I'll give him 20 bucks for it, plus he pays shipping. Since it is no longer a firearm it won't cost him more than a couple of bucks to ship that paperweight via the USPS

There were some pretty funny replies in that thread as well. I don't want to be near the first time he attempts to shoot it.

Had a guy come into the gunshop one day and tell me his gun was broken and parts were falling out. He pulls out a 59 S&W and told me that every time he fired it, he saw parts flying off. Took a few minutes to convince him that this was normal and that it would quit when the little removable box was empty. He had never fired a semi auto pistol and was shocked when empty casings ejected on firing.

He had borrowed the gun and had no clue how to work it or load it.

Never mind shooting it, i want to see what's left when he uses his tire iron to pry it apart to see how deep the crack is.

Would you have this guy's contact info? I'm in Tennessee as well, and I'd like to do the man afavor and take the defective thing off his hands.

Reminds me of a feller rideing a train years ago. A vender walked through selling banannas. He never had one so bought one. Later the vender came through again and asked him how he liked it. The guy said it was okay, but had too much core to it!

The right thing to do is explain to the guy its just the side plate.
But the the other side of me tells me to tell the guy that he could fix the crack with a good welder!

I hope he doesn't learn the hard way to keep his finger away from the front of the cylinder when he goes shooting.

I guess that the above is really the best answer. It's really unfortunate that some people don't get properly educated in things that seem pretty simple to those of us who have been. On the other hand, I never learned diddly-squat about dynamite, which is probably even simpler than firearms, but I somehow manage not to get into trouble with it.

This is hilarious. A couple of years ago a lady I work with wanted to buy a revolver for her Dad for christmas. I helped her find a very nice, used Model 38. When she showed it to her brother-in-law, he was shocked at the crack in the side. She called me and told me the gun was broken and wanted to know what to do. I told her to bring too me so I could check it out and when she showed me the "crack" I just about fell over laughing. It was the side plate just like this 686.

I could run the TIG welder along the seam! After all it will never get cleaned that well anyway.

Will that work? ! ? !

When I was going through Armorers school I had a question asked that just amazed me. During the introduction on the M60 machine gun the instructor said something to the effect of: The M60 is a belt fed, gas operated, automatic weapon.

The person next to me looked at the M60 on the bench, leaned over to me and said: These things are gas operated? I thought they ran by themselves!

She was dead serious.

Hey Lee,
I looked at mine and they are defective too. Think Caj will start a class-action lawsuit for us all?

By the way, my GP-100 is just fine, I guess Rugers really are stronger.

Yes, unless that screw backs out. Better to have a lock screw to hold that one in.

But they probably wouldn't have cracked in the first place if some idiot hadn't fired +P in them.

My observation almost always pertains exclusively to the ar15 forums....

What amazes me even more then these peoples...um well lack of sense is that they almost alway have hundreds of posts before this one...this guys had 124 posts before this...it almost makes me want to go back and read some of their other ones...but my forehead usually hurts so bad from placing my open palm against it multiple times that I couldn't stand the pain.

Wasn't the "my firing pin wobbles on the hammer" thread started on the S&W forums?

I work at the busiest port in the US, we have Port Police, a sergeant who still used a revolver said a recruit took a close look at the revolver and replied "where do the empty ones come out from"?

I just checked and ALL my 686 revolvers have that same exact crack. I sure hope there is a "fix." What about some epoxy?

I'm on it. Due Dilligence requires that I examine the evidence carefully before filing suit so Lee and the rest of you send all those defective S&W's down to me for inspection.

Finally I have the cure for something on this forum. I have been a certified welder for a long time and I could tig those cracks up, fill, and grind then machine them flush in no time. send it to me. I could make it look like a stainless 19-3/ mis marked 66.

LL,

What are they saying on the AR forum? I hope they are being, at least, a little gentle with this person.

I had a guy try to sell me a Glock once. He said it was new, but the thing had turned black from rust and someone had spray painted the grip frame with driveway sealer. The safety/decocker was broke off too.
