We used to have something similiar when I was stationed in Iceland, Condition Charlie. In Charlie we could not leave where we were, so if we even thought we may go into a Condition Charlie during a winter storm we would head for the EM Club to hang out!

Not picking on the Navy or nothing but you really needed an excuse to drink beer?

EM Club hang-out means no duty station or work detail.

When I was in Greenland (1959-60), it was 'phases'. If I remember, Phase 3 was the worst, and you didn't want to go out in it. Sometimes you couldn't see below your waist for the blowing snow.

Actually, we went there to hang out so we would be close to the beer if we went into Condition Charlie. That way we could drink to our heart's content without touching our "rationed" beer or booze. What better place to get stuck in a storm that a place with beer/booze and food?

667ACW Squadron, Hofn, Iceland 74-75. We got our support from the Navy at Keflavic and most of the winter they just flew over and air dropped our 1st. class mail because they could not land. If they could land they would not because they were afraid they could not take off. They called one time and said that the mail would not come for another week because they could not get the hanger doors open because they were frozen shut....... By the way we did not have a runway, they had to land on the sand runway at the town of Hofn where they had a shack that they called their airport....
