Spyderco vs. the Dryer
I transferred three of my jeans from the washer to the dryer and set it for a 60 minute dry cycle. I heard a bunch of clanking so I opened the door, pulled the wad of three jeans out, felt and looked around (but did not check every jean/pocket individually) and found nothing amiss. Put the jeans back in the dryer and re-started it finding the clanking to be substantially subdued so I figured it was just the buttons clanking on the dryer drum.
Came back a couple hours later and the dryer had stopped at the 20 minute mark. Opened the door to find this:
The knife had opened then got driven into the plastic near the lint filter stopping the drum cold. The molded plastic in this location is very thick and I'm amazed at how deep the knife cut into the plastic.
I was able to turn the drum backward enough to take the pressure off but could not pull the knife from the plastic. Ended up having to use a hard rubber faced hammer to hammer it out. Figured the blade would be tweaked for sure given all the leveraging and hammering, but it is just fine.
I thought the electric motor or the dryer belt would be burnt up but the dryer still works fine. Must be some sort of switch or breaker that shuts it down in the event of a jammed drum I guess.
I will be checking all pockets in the future...

I'd be in big trouble with the Mrs..
You should send that photo to Spyderco, I'm sure they'd love to see it. Did your clothes get cut?

No, the jeans are fine. It is probably fortunate that it happened this way as opposed to the knife opening and then just laying in with the jeans when someone went to remove the jeans from the dryer. Grabbing a handful of that blade would not make for a good day.

I once had a Motorola Razor in my jeans pocket, which I forgot about, and threw them in the wash. After the wash was done, I threw them in the dryer. Well, the phone still worked! The only problem it had was that the ringer wouldn't work.

Is that a Sage? I'm thinking about buying one for on the job use, looks great!
I'm currently carrying a Spyderco Navigator. Great little knife, just need one a little bigger.

Yes it is the Sage. I originally purchased the Tenacious as an alternative to my usual Delica for carry, but Tenacious was too large in the pocket so the Sage seemed like the next step smaller.

That's even better than Cold Steel's advertising.

UH-Oh.
I can see it coming.......
If killing a dryer with a knife is a dicey(sic) proposition, this begs the question-
What Size Gun Should I carry to Shoot Dryers?
Could someone start a thread, please?

Spyderco makes some pretty stout knives. I just inherited one from my FIL that I can't identify. It's just about 1/8" smaller than the Delica and is all stainless-steel, but has a checkered rubber insert on the face of the handle and the same checkered rubber on both sides of the clip. Any idea what model it may have been?

Wow. I'd bet that Sal Glesser and the Spyderco people would like to see this thread.

I'll be happy to start the "Guns & Loads for Clothes Drying Appliances" thread just as soon as the smoke clears and the fire department lets me back into the house, and the police are satisfied that there is nothing criminal about my experiment in furtherance of your request, and the wife is mollified by the promise of a prompt replacement. No good deed goes unpunished...

I'm curious as to how it opened? I've washed and dried a few knives and phones myself. Knives never opened and phones never worked right again.

Inside a rotating dryer drum must be a hot and violent place.

It is hot and violent. My daughter's cat used to sleep in the drier and a couple of times went around a few turns. When my daughter heard the thumping and opened the door a VERY disturbed cat emerged.
