Should everyone own a 45ACP revolver?
I overheard a debate on this when I was in the gun store earlier today. What's your answer?

No. Some people shouldn't own a spork.
I'll take their .45 wheelies!

I agree, the answer is a definite NO!
If everyone owned one, there would be lots fewer of them for me- and it'd be harder to find .45AR brass!
Or would it be easier...since folks would throw more of it away at the range? Catch 22...
(Kinda of a self serving answer, isn't it? )

No. .22LR, .357 Mag, and .44 Mag will do anything that needs doing.

What exactly will a .45ACP do in a revolver that any other round won't do? (And in every case I can think of, do better.) I mean besides not come out of the cylinder without those little thingies.
I can see the Army's reason, but I've never figured out why somebody with a choice would want one. (To shoot I mean.)

That "thingy" allows for the fastest reloads possible. I think the current record is 6 rounds/reload/6 rounds in 2.99 seconds. Try that with a speed loader.
They are a joy to shoot and I think no one but me should own them.

The 45ACP smiths are nice guns, for sure, but I own a 25-5 and a 625, and I don't own a revolver in 45ACP... I feel like 45LC is much better in a revolver. If I'm not mistaken, the 45ACP came about oringally in part due to the Army's request to get a cartridge similer to the 45LC in an auto loader, kind of like what they did with the .357 Magnum/.357SIG loading.
The military went to the 45ACP revolvers because they didn't have enough 1911s.
Personally, I don't like a revolver that relies on clips of any sort, but some people don't mind them and others really like them. I have friends that shoot competition who say that the 625 (45ACP) dominates revovler shoots due to the fact that the "fat" 45 rounds fall better, or faster, into the cylinders than .38 or .357, etc. moonclips. As the other poster said, aside from being fun to shoot, they dominate revolver competition because of the speed factor.
I would probably buy a a 625 45ACP Jerry Miculek if Smith made one without the lock. Are you listening Smith & Wesson???

I can't think of any serious argument that could be made for absolutely needing a .45 revolver, anymore than I can imagine a need to own any other specific type of firearm.
The only time I can think of advising that someone "needed" a specific type/caliber of firearm would be if we were imagining a scenario where we were limited to owning a very small number of handguns, in which case I could see that owning a .22 of some kind (revolver or semi-auto), as well as having a .357 revolver, could be advantageous.
Actually, most shooters would benefit from owning a .22LR firearm of some sort, probably both a pistol and rifle. Under normal circumstances, that's the closest I'd come to saying everyone "needs" one of these.

Nah, the ammo is too expensive.
I get my moon clip fix with my 610 and am a huge fan of moon clips. However, when you compare the cost difference between the 40S&W and the 45 ACP, the 610 is a marvalous way to enjoy shooting with moon clips while not breaking the bank account.
BTW, I also have a 6 inch 617 and agree that everyone should have at least one 22LR handgun and rifle. They are fun, cheap to shoot, and great small game getters as long as you respect it's range limitations. In addition, I can't concieve of a gun more suited to starting out a new shooter than a 22.

45ACP Revolver
My Mountain Gun in 45ACP is a dandy item. Accurate with 200gr CCI factory and will digest any of the lesser known brands that happen to be available. [And which used to be cheap!] Good thump and very satisfying!
Never bother with moon clips.
Great revolver!

Dyson

I wouldn't mind having one if someone bought it for me.
I just do not see the sense in loading moon clips and then loading you gun and then de mooning. I suppose you could use 45 AR brass. I just shoot my 45 autos out of a semi auto and my 44's, 357's etc out of a revolver.
Plus the JM model is way expensive.

No, a person should own several. Smith & Colt 1917s, a rechambered Webley or two, a Model 25, a Model 625, and a 325PD. I wish I did.

It is a great choice for anyone who is a 1911 or any other 45 ACP semiauto user.
Also if you do not need the power of a 44 Mag, the 45 ACP revolver is an excellent choice.
It is my second favorite revolver.

I have a 625 JM. You guys that don't want them, PM me. I want a Model 25 and 1917 in ACP. I reload 45s on a Dillion SD and they shoot very good. And they are cheap.

.45ACP revolvers? That's silly...
ACP stands for Automatic Colt Pistol.
Pretty self-explanatory in my opinion.

45 ACP in a DA revolver, well now I thought it was such a good idea that I figured a SA would be cool so I got myself one of those Ruger Black Hawk converibles in 45 Colt/45ACP. The thing is a tack driver with the 45 ACP and dont shoot too bad with the 45 Colt either! Heck, even my 625"s and model 22 dont mind it in the safe.

Nope - Not EVERYONE... There are some out there that shouldn't be allowed to have sharp or pointy objects, let alone 45 ACP revolvers...

That's because you've never shot with moon clips. Eight loaded clips will fit quite nicely in a standard 50 round box of ammo. So, load up 16 of them and you have 96 rounds ready to go and you can spend your range time shooting instead of reloading. In addition, every single casing comes home with you still in the clips. Fact is that I can get in more practice than most semi auto shooters who have to stop and reload their range magazine. Finally, clips cost a lot less than most magazines so it's not any strain at all of have 30 or 40 of them. As for the time involved in de-mooning and reloading the clips, I can do 16 clips in about 15 minutes, so when the sports and weather come on I'll reload the clips and package the empties for when primers become available locally and I can start reloading.

For anyone who owns a .45 auto, the .45 ACP revolver is a great "garbage disposal" for reloads that come out too blunt-nosed, too short OAL, or too light to run in the semi.
As many have noted, the fastest reload possible in a revolver.
As a young cop carrying a cut down 4", 5-screw pre-25 1955 Target on duty, I discovered that four primitive full moon clips of the day would fit (barely)in a double N-frame Dade speedloader pouch: 24 rounds in the same space as 12 .38s or .357s.
Work faster than .38 thru .40 caliber moon clips wheelguns, since there's more chamber hole and less steel cylinder wall in the way.
For those who prefer revolvers and have to keep the gun unloaded (California open carry, or nervous spouse), it gives the fastest state of readiness from what Jeff Cooper called Condition Four.
Fun guns, will be shooting one (PC 625) on Easter in the Sunshine Games in Orlando.

No more than everybody should own a .25 auto or whatever cartridge you choose. The .45 ACP is great in an auto, but doesn't offer anything special in a revolver.

My 625JM works for me, the golddot front sight just makes you look at it. The MOONCLIPS can produce some fast range action should you so desire.

I have had a hankerin' for a S&W 1917 for some time now. Why do I need one? Maybe because I don't have one, or maybe because I already have some moon clips and a US flap holster for one, or maybe just for the "cool" factor. I have purchased firearms in the past just because I had a box of ammo for them but didn't have a gun to match! I'm crazy like that!

Sorry: According to a Smith rep the locks are here to stay.I like shooting my 625 45acp revolver as it simplifies my reloading and is very accurate. I shoot a 1917 Colt Govt model, a 1938 Ballester Riguad,a 1966 Giles[tack driver] and a Sig P220. One load for 5 guns. 4.8 grs W231 200 gr RNFP Penn bullets.

Very good choice!
I just wish someone made a current version of the Webley.
Well, I guess the Uberti Schofields are about as close as we can get.
There isn't enough Webleys to go around.

Nope. Not me. I'm weeding out calibers I don't use that often. .45 will soon be out of my stash, so I'll have no need for a .45 wheelgun.

Should everyone own a 45 ACP revolver, you ask.....Its up to them but not really. Would be nice to have, I guess, but not a "Need To OWN" gun at all.

The Obama Administration should ram a law down our throats that requires everyone to own one. If you cannot afford one or you choose not to afford one, everyone else should pay extra and Obama will provide one for you after everyone else pays for it.
