Default protection for stored guns

what do you all put on your guns to protect them before you put them away in storage?

I most often wipe them with a "Rig Rag".

It is a piece of fleece, real fleece I think, the leather is real, that is coated with RIG [Rust Inhibiting Grease].

When the RIG Rag runs low in grease I just add some more.

I have never had a gun rust with RIG on it.

I carried several guns in the trunk of my car for over 23 years, never had a problem.

I wipe them down with CLP treated rag and put them in a gun sock. Any time one is handled it gets the CLP treatment and put back in the sock. All of mine are stored in the safes with Goldenrod dehumidifiers.

Same for me except I don't use the sock when they're in the vault.

Faulkner, the reason I put them in the gun socks is to help prevent "Scars". I had one of my M1's fall against a NIB Ducks Unlimited Browning/Winchester M12 Grade 5 28 Ga a few years ago and had to have the butt stock steamed and refinished. That's the reason I bought a second safe. I keep the shooters in one and the safe queens in the other. The safe with the "Queens" gets opened and the contents moved around far less than the contents in my shooter grade safe.

RIG. Then I make sure that they are not touching cloth or anything else that will hold moisture, or foam or anything else that the RIG may damage. In other words, plastic bag or S&W paper. Then they go in their original boxes or padded cases. I have never had a gun rust in storage, even for several years in a storage shed in Norfolk VA.

I store my guns in a safe in Hawaii before I get back to them after 11 months every year. I wipe 'em down with Sheath or RIG or similar, and put them in a baggie, squeeze as much air out as possible, and then add another baggie, and again squeeze out air. Put rubber bands in top of that. It is a major PITA time wise, but works well -- no rust discovered so far.

I have them in a climate controlled storage area at this time, but I have had them in a non climate controlled garage as well with no problems for 11 months using above approach.

Does make a fellow nervous tho, don't it?

Plus 1 on the Sheath product. A little on a rag go's a long way and seems to work good for me. I also have Goldenrods in my safes. So far, so good.

Also, I have dinged a few nice stocks trying to put to many firearms in a safe, I'm a slow learner.

I just wipe them down with FP-10 and put them in the safe as is. My safe is low moisture thanks to Remington Mini-Dehumidifiers.
