Smile pack rat problems

Hey people,
I know from what I have read on this forum that a lot of you live in rural areas if not the boonies like me. every morning when I check under the hood of my truck, some varmint has left me a pile of dog food on top of my flow meter. Used to be some kind of weeds like watercress or something. got any Ideas how to keep them away. I've tried rodent repellents but they only work a couple of days, and that stuff is expensive. I have heard that wintergreen oil on a cotton ball would work but ain't never tried it.
I want to hide under the hood and shoot them but it is my only truck.
any help would be appreciated greatly.
thanks
gordon

Don't let the other critters get into the mothballs.Other than that they're OK.

I just read that in the little private enclave of Mineral King in the Sierra Nevada, a locally peculiar problem is that of marmots (large rodent) eating, or at least chewing electric insulation and other soft stuff from the underside of vehicles. The local prophylactic procedure is to "diaper" the vehicle by driving it over a large tarpaulin, wrapping the tarp up and around the vehicle and tying it off, which purportedly prevents marmots' mastication of important parts. I am not making this up... If you try this method, please advise the degree of its efficacy.

Try a Jack Russell terrier tied to the front bumper.

The problem here is chipmunks. They are about the size of a small rat, or very large mouse. They have cut my spark plug wires, and fuel injector wires. I have shot 21 of them with my 22 and more keep coming in to take up the runs and tunnels. The 22 is the only thing that has worked so far. I need an AR in 410 short. I wouldn't have to worry about the bullets hitting something I don't want hit.

It is a problem here in FL as well. We have had the electrical wiring in the transmissions of a few of our (Army) GSA vans totally replaced due to field mice. It is not an isolated problem.

I have a large Siamese cat who loves wood rats and we go hunting three or four times a day. He is better at it than my sisters Jack Russell who is no slouch. Between the hawks, Indigo Snakes, and the cat and I, we can just about keep up with the breeding rate---they are very prolific.

I wouldn't say too much about those indigo snakes. If the tree huggers find you have them, they will move you out and give your property to the snakes. Sort of like having red-cockaded woodpeckers in your pines. You can forget cutting them, they belong to the peckerwoods now.

Seriously, I used to see those snakes regularly when I was a kid. I don't believe I've seen one in thirty years.

I used a live catch Hav-A-Hart trap a few years back...then drove them several miles away and released them. Check the trap every few hours...you may be surprised how many you will catch. A regular kill type rat trap works as well.

Pack Rat urine smells terrible and they dribble it everywhere. That as well as the damage they can wreak make them a royal PITA.

Take away their food source too. They love dog and cat dry food.

Good luck!

Remember seeing that dryer sheets may work for keeping mice out of the engine compartment - I found a nest next to battery. Had puppies chew off one of the stabilizers on my Xterra 4X4 and it was $285 to replace. Critters can do damage!

I knew a guy who kept a red-headed, double-breasted matress thatcher, until he was found out! Whatever you try, better not post it,
as some people don't believe in the sanctity of personal transportation

Aloha,

OK, what's a "double-brested matress thatcher"?

I heard in Alaska, porcupines chew on radiator hoses etc.

I guess another reason Not to move to the mainland US?

I'd be totally clueless on a lot of stuff.

Use "Final Blox" rat control pellets...9# pail for $33...approx 150 each 2" pellets.

Pool Pest and Lawn.com...1-866-941-0348...Texas location...shipped UPS in 2 days.

Will handle any critter problems...rat/mice, pesky squirrels, chipmunks.

Takes a few days to work but they are gone.

Keep cats & dogs away from the stuff.

My neighbor ignored the red squirrels in his crawl space. They ate through some electrical wires and the house burnt down...cost him over $10K even after insurance assistance.

I sort of agree with the treehuggers about the Indigo Snakes, we are blessed with at least one resident, although they tend to be shy so I don’t see it a lot. I never see a Eastern Dia, or Pigmy Rattler around the house in fact very few other snakes. The Indigo Snake is sort of the top of the snake food chain around here and keeps the place cleaned out. We have bird feeders out and the spillage results in rodents. Rodents=snakes.

Normally and my neighbor is an example we would also have E. Diamondbacks, I killed a nice 6 footer for him, but not here.
The cat and I can hunt to our hearts content without snake worries. You can learn a lot about hunting by partnering with a cat.
