I decided to post this, as I received an email from a forum member you was wondering if I was ok. I'm not sure how many of you have seen on the news the devastating flooding happening here in middle TN. The worse ever for Nashville. It started storming yesterday morning, and is still coming down in buckets, and is expected to do so the rest of the day. I live about 1/4 mile from the Cumberland river, but it's quite a ways below in a deep ravine, so as of now, no problems, except standing water in the yard. There have been some deaths reported, as well as the interstates here in the Nashville area closed. Please keep us in your prayers. Here's a link to a video of cars and even a building that were floating down Interstate 24 a few minutes south of Nashville yesterday.

I just drove through Nashville on Friday, on I-24. Then, yesterday, I walked by a TV that was showing a semi truck half underwater where I had just been. I don't know why people drive into water, but I know I've done it, too. Glad you're high and (mostly) dry, Misty.

I was through Nashville twice last week on the way and back from Talladega. It sure looks bad. Tennexplorer was getting lots of rain in Memphis also.

I now live in the Texas coastal plain, the only time my house flooded was when I was a few hundred yards from the highest point in Ohio near the summit of one of the highest points east of the Mississippi. It can happen anywhere.Good luck.

Funnel cloud went over my Dad and I's house last night about 8:30 here in Florence. You could hear the wind sucking on his chimney from our spot in the den. We've had a relatively mild spring so far, but it looks like this is about to change. Stay safe, Misty.

I called my Mom this morning to make sure she was all right. She's at the same elevation as the Shelby Park railroad trestle, so direct flooding was not a concern. But houses have been known to wash off hills before.

My sister-in-law is at a lower elevation near a creek. It's full, but no real problems, yet...

14" in two days just doubled the two day record for Nashville. Y'all hang on up there, and stay safe!

I wanted to update my forum family. First....thank you all for the prayers and thoughts. I'm in my home now. Not sure for how long though. I live 1/4 mile from the Cumberland River, which is still rising, although the rains stopped last night. Downtown Nashville is experiencing flooding from the river, which is, I believe, 10 feet above flood stage. So I'm praying my neighborhood is high enough to escape the river. There has been a fire just down a small cul de sac since early this morning. The firetrucks went up and down the street and cul de sac drive, but I don't believe they could get to the fire because of the flood waters. Anyway, back to my situation. The water has receded, although the river continues to rise. By that I mean the water in my yard has receded. However, I have 5 feet of water in my basement, and I believe there is damage to the foundation. I won't know for sure until I get someone to pump out the water. I talked to one of my neighbors, and they also had a basement full of water. But thank God, no one was hurt, or worse. There have been a number of deaths due to floods. Nashville has set all kind of records for rain. We had close to 14 inches of rain Saturday and Sunday. I feel so sorry for the people who lost loved ones, homes, everything. I have never seen anything like this. Except pictures and videos from Katrina and when the Mississippi flooded a few years back. I'm still in shock. I apologize for the long post. But you all are like family to me, even though we've never met. And your prayers mean more to me than words can describe. I will add another update as soon as I can.

Here's a couple pics I just took. The fire was a pumping station along the river. It was flooded and caught fire. It's still burning. The river is no longer 1/4 mile from my house. It's now visible from my windows. The first shot is the cul de sac across the street. Many of the homes are flooded. The car behind the white truck on the left is parked at the edge of the water. So you can see how close the water is getting to my home. The picture was taken from the street in front of my house. The other picture was taken from the street, just a stones throw down from my house.

Thanks for the report, Misty. I'm one of those who slips into high anxiety mode when a forum member reports trouble; I think I have more people here who feel like friends and family than I do in my walk-around face-to-face world.

Just remember when you look for flooding to happen or figure out how high it could go. Then check out how much rain they had up the river from your location. When I was growing up on the river after a large rain we would call other people further up the river to see how much rain they had. Still have some memories of the river raising about a foot an hour. Fast moving water so watch out if you have to cross or get into the water. My prayers are with you Misty and everyone else that are involved with flooding any place.

Glad you're still safe. I hope any basement problems do not
involve foundation problems. You only need one set of problems at a time. Good luck to you and your neighbors, TACC1.

A warning for pumping basements dry. The first inclination is to keep the water out. If you remove the water from the basement, the pressure from the waterlogged soil outside may collapse the foundation. If I'm telling you all something you know already, sorry. A few neighbors had such damage when we had floods in the 80's. Good luck to you Misty.

Fill the bathtub with water, for drinking. You may have to treat it or boil it (if you have the ability) to drink it. Well wishes and prayers are great, and soothing, but this S&W forum is populated by people who have been through most disasters. You need advise now. I would stay in the house as long as safety permits.

Same here. I am closer to acquaintances I have made here than in my day to day existence.

I sent an e-mail to our friend Jessie (NKJNUT) this morning, but have not heard back. Hope all is well in his neck of the (wet) woods.

I'm still in my home, but the water is still rising. It has come up about a foot since I took the last pictures. Now they are saying the river won't crest until 8 o'clock tonight. Thank you again for the prayers, thoughts, and advice.

I wouldn't stay any longer than is safe. If others around you start heading out, you'd probably be in your best interest to head out with them. Some things can't be replaced, and one of those is your life.

I just got an e-mail from Jessie. He and Donna were in Atlanta when it hit, and were worried what they'd find at home. All is well with them, however, and their house was not damaged. He said that some of his neighbors had lost everything. Best of luck to all you folks in TN!
