Exclamation Someone is screaming in the woods!

My cousin and her husband are in the area so I invited them over tonight. They currently live in NJ but are looking to move out to PA. My brother and I own 164 acres in rural PA and they asked if we would consider selling them an acre on which to build a house. We like our cousin, so we said we'd consider it. There are two spots we would offer that would keep them far enough away and out of sight.

I had them over for dinner and afterward we took a ride so I could show them the land. We then drove up into the woods and I showed off my range. The two of them are just getting into guns (he owns a .45 and they are looking for something for her) so I thought they'd get a kick out of it. I wasn't planning on doing any shooting so they were stuck with only being able to shoot my 681 since that's what I had on me. Luckily I had ammo in the truck. They had a good time and I think they may get a .357 for my cousin.

Afterward I made a fire and we sat around outside with a few beers. We came inside around 10 and farted around online for a bit looking at gun stuff. I guess around 11 they decided to head off, so we said our goodbyes. I walked them to their car and came back inside. A few seconds later I heard my cousin banging on my door.

When I opened the door she looked scared half to death. As they were starting to leave they heard screaming coming from the woods! Obviously this startled them so they came to get me...... Anyway I poked my head out the door and sure enough heard the screaming....

Coyotes.

I laughed a little and let them know it was just some 'yotes hunting and within a few seconds the "screaming" came to an end. I told them they were done... they caught whatever they were chasing.

They were very relieved.. I just hope the scare doesn't turn them off from country living. I got the feeling though earlier in the night they may go with something in town.

Yeah, that squealing when they catch a smaller critter is something else. Woke me up out of a sound sleep the first night we were in our new house. MrsZ went *flying* out the door to check on her pet goats, while I was still fumbling out a box of shells for the shotgun and trying to convince her to wait a second.

One time there was a horrendous screaming in the woods. I sent the dogs out but they couldn't find it. The next night, the screaming was behind the house. The horses were going nuts but the dogs ignored it. The following night, it was over.

Years later, we were watching a movie and that's where we learned what it was.

Loons at dusk on a lake make a very eerie sound. If you don't know better you would swear it is a woman screaming.

Agreed... its a sound you do NOT want to hear while walking country dirt roads at night.

I've heard a bobcat a few times.. they're a bit creepy too. People think I'm weird (my mother and girlfriend for example) because I kind of like the sound of coyotes. I find it amazing hearing them start yelping and then hearing more join in. Sometimes they're close enough where I can actually track their movement. Then when they suddenly stop.... just nature running its course.

My farm is just a few miles from the AT, cross country that is. Anyway, one night I hear the most god-awful noise in the woods. I arm myself and track it down. A couple of AT thru hikers had gotten lost and decided to camp in the valley. They had a bottle of 'shine they'd bought from a local and were proceeding to sample some of TN's finest. I don't reckon that anybody had told them that it's about 140 proof. So these guys are snot blowing drunk and howling at the moon. They didn't look so good in the morning either.

Took a trash sack out to the old barn one night. Just as I put the sack down, a bobcat in the loft screamed. I went back to the house in 3 steps, about 150 yards.

As for "strange nocturnal noises", you should stay in Detroit for a night or two.

Scariest sound I ever heard was a fox "screaming"! I was about 12 and out in the fields of my Grandfather's farm just before dark.
I heard what sounded like a women getting murdered, x10!, in the woods behind me.
It was about a 12 acre field and a fox came out on the opposite side of the field from me, stood there and did it again.
My uncle said he was also scared by them when he was a kid.

Personally I'm not afraid to say I have heard somethings out in the forest I just can't identify,I'm not one to jump to conclusions so I go look up sounds and see if I can make out what it is....

At least twice now I've heard ones I cannot find an explanation for, plus some of the other odd things I've run into.

We have a lot of coyotes here in our community. The high Sonoran desert suits them well and they don't particularly care if humans are here or not. I usually see them, singles and occasionally a mated pair and they never gave me any concern. There is so much game for them to feed on, not counting all of the house pets our community has to offer, that they are pretty large. Most go 45 lbs or better with some probably approaching 60 to 70 lbs.

A couple of weeks ago late afternoon, nearly sunset, I came across a pack of 6, obviously hunting together, working the outer holes of the golf course. This made me very nervous. I still had a few folks out playing, some of them being little old ladies/men. One or two shouldn't be a problem but a pack of 6 could make quick work of a senior citizen. I more or less herded them off the course chasing them with my golf cart and making a lot of racket. Happily they fled without any problems. They are beautiful animals who have mastered survival living on the edge of our two worlds but some nights I wish the boss would let us carry on the job. (o;
