Talk Derby to me
It's Derby time in Big Lou. You can't believe the sights. Fast horses and Beautiful Ladies. Thinking about going to a club across the street from Churchill Downs, located at Taylor and Central Ave. Live music and oh, the scenery.

And I'm staying the heck away. I didn't even go into work(at U of L) today.
Going to the Derby once was enough for me.

Do they still have the Buffet? It's easier on the wallet at the local beer clubs. It all looks good after the sun goes down.

My cousin had to fly to Louisville on business this week and was shocked his hotel was $500 a night. At the airport he started seeing all the ladies with the big hat boxes and realized it was race week. I suggested he bet on the last one to take a dump right before the race. Just for him, I clarified I was referring to the horses, not the ladies in the big hats!

Weatherman sure is co-operating. 63 degrees, dead calm and light sun right now and forecast is for blue sky mid 70s. Expecting a record crowd and now general admission for the infield is $60. Derby race is worth a cool 2 million to the winner.

I heard about a girl with a long face once. Seems she could drink out of the bottom of a five gallon bucket and still look you dead in the eye.

When I was in charge of our distinguished speaker series at school, I booked a room in September at a decent-but not great-hotel pretty far from the track. The total bill was a little under $1400-$550 for Friday and Saturday night, then about $75/night for Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday night.
Last year, our speaker couldn't come to the Derby, so we put him up at the Brown on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday night after the Derby. The total bill was a little over $800, and that was for an extra-special deluxe room at the Brown(had to insert your room key to get the elevator to stop at that floor).

As I type this my wife is making the final preparations for a Derby party. She has invited several of her "horse" friends over and they will drink mint juleps, eat finger sandwiches and place informal bets among themselves. Me, I've loaded a few hundred pounds of scrap lead into the truck and I'm headed to Ivan the Butchers house for some casting.

As a Kentucky Colonel, I will be dutifully watching the Derby today.
Oh, and here is a recipe for the perfect mint julep:
INGREDIENTS
3 oz. Kentucky Bourbon
2 tbs. mint simple syrup (see note)
Sprig of mint, for garnish
INSTRUCTIONS
Fill a glass or julep cup with crushed ice. Add bourbon and mint syrup; stir gently until the glass is thoroughly chilled. Garnish with mint sprig.
Note: To make the mint syrup, combine 1 cup sugar and 1 cup water in a small saucepan. Boil until sugar is fully dissolved. Pour the syrup into a heatproof container filled with 1 cup crushed mint. Cover and refrigerate for 8 hours or overnight; strain and discard mint. Mint syrup will keep for up to 3 weeks in the refrigerator.
...but that's not how I make it. Forget all that fancy-dancy mint slush junk - pour it down the drain. Get a GOOD Kentucky Bourbon like Rebel Yell, and just pour it on the rocks! Sit back. Enjoy the Derby!
John

Took a 4 mile annual run this morning around the Downs about 9 am. The philles were already shinning, and the crowd was getting thick. I have to tell you, the beauty that the Derby attracts is just unbelievable. Hope you pick a winner.

Unbelievable the bad advice you can get on the internet. Even suggesting a mint julep in a "glass" should get you shot. Driving in Lvlle isn't easy or good, even during an "off" time. Those folks just don't know how to do it.
As a hint, there is a drink container named a Julep. Its designed for consuming mint juleps. They never are made with syrup of any kind. You crush mint leaves. The container is made from Sterling Silver. You have one of your own. Normal pricing for them starts at maybe $250 and goes upward depending on who made it and how long ago. Its pretty traditional to store it on display in one's den or living room. If you're impoverished or morally deficient, you may have one with silver plating on the thing. You don't display that kind of thing because it shows your lack of class.
Is Rebel Yell even still on the market. Just for reference, you can't drink more than one or two before you hit the floor. Stay out of the horse barns, those things have manure where anyone drinking or trying to drink several ends up. Yes, the women sometimes wear stupid hats. Down in the infield the more comely young lasses often get drunk and display their assets to the crowd. Cheering is traditional. Those folks generally don't make it to the race itself. They're what we call wasted.
Folks who live anywhere within hiking distance often make their rent or mortgage payment (late) with their earnings from parking others on their lawn.
Oh, I'm watching from home, on the TV.

My oldest daughter is up there. She texted her sister earlier that she bet $28 on one of the races and won $416.
Beginner's luck.
