Fox News just reported that Chicago is starting another gun buyback program tomorrow. Chicago officials admit that the program won't do anything about the guns most likely to be used on the streets, but they want to get all those dusty old guns out of your attics and basements so that they aren't found by children.

So get out your Lorcins and RGs, and go get some cash to buy a new gun!

Its a sting don't do it! Everybody knows that if you have a handgun in Chicago you'll get arrested, convicted, and imprisoned. Not a $50 gift card to Big Box Mart.

Do gunshops get to set up a booth outside? Do they just give a flat rate per gun?

When Oakland had a gun buyback two years ago, I went home with $1,500. They were giving $250 per handgun. Oakland PD got about 1,000 junk guns, and it cost them about a quarter million dollars. That weekend, after the buyback, there were five shootings courtesy of the real street criminals.

I spent my money on a US Firearms revolver with Paul Persinger ivory grips.

Such programs are illegal.

You are not selling to an individual but rather to a group and they will not be the end user.

They do not have the authority to buy guns since some are likely stolen and they cannot give amnesty for either possession of or theft of a firearm. Even the police department cannot give permission for such.

I have the records of three gun buy back attempts. All were illegal, not one got a decent gun but rather got a few stolen guns and several guns that sold new for less than what was being paid for them.

Maybe I should start a gun buy back program, only for my own needs. Each gun turned in would get $50 per revolver, $75 for each semi and $100 for each rifle. Three thousand dollars ought to bring in a lot of guns off the street. Those that were stolen, I would turn into the local PD. The rest would fill my cabinets.

On the surface dumping your junk guns at the gun backs would be a good thing. But it seems that it would just inflate the number of guns taken in by the antis. They would use these numbers as proof that they were successful.

I agree it's time to challenge the legality of these programs. How many cases have we heard of the people running getting caught "cherry picking" them for desireable items. And when did you ever hear of a "Turn in your controlled substances" or "Turn in your counterfeit money"
buyback. They are of course, just feel goods and "Let's pretend we're doing something about crime."

I'm not sure if you are being serious, but the Chicago gun buyback is not a "sting". They take no names and no one is hassled. It can be a good way to get something out of a junk gun, but I cringe at some of the nice guns I have seen people turn in.

However, Chicago is having trouble getting money for the buyback; potential donors know it does nothing to combat crime. Hizzoner Da Mayor has had to twist arms to get contributions. This year they are giving $100 for "assault weapons" and $75 for other guns. It used to be $100 for anything.

They're doing the same thing in the Los Angeles area for "Mother's Day". If people want to turn in their guns for pennies on the dollar I guess that's their business. What really bothers me though is that it is advertised as being a completely anonymous transaction. No ID required, don't have to show that you are indeed the legal owner of the gun... just bring it in and get your bucks... no questions asked. What a great way to safely fence your freshly stolen guns... or maybe to dispose of a gun used in a crime?

I have a small drawer full of broken top break revolvers I've accumulated over the years. Most have been used as organ donors so are missing parts. I'm HOPING for a buy back close to me so I can clean out and start the accumulation process over.

Chicago is totally flat broke & in debt, Illinois is totally flat broke & in debt, the Chicago Police Dept is undermanned something like 3000 LEOs, Chi is in the middle of a wave of violence, and yet they find time to do this sort of thing.

These problems encourage theft as well. Far from fighting crime, they abet it.

Several questions come to mind.

1. How can the city of Chicago buy back something they have never
owned or had control of?

2. Under current federal and Illinois state laws how is this even close to
being perceived as being legal? Are they filling out and calling in a fed
4473 yellow sheet. Are the people actually buying the guns holders of
FFL and all Illinois firearms licenses?

3. How are the guns being paid for? Is the city of Chicago using city,
state or federal money?

4. Who has oversight of the program to make sure all laws are obeyed?

5. How are we to be certain no politician or other crooks are sitting at
the main collection site "cherry picking" all the good stuff?

6. Is the ATF investigating these transactions to make sure no federal
laws are broken.

I bet some of the "city authorized" people involved in the buy back program and actually handling the money and guns are convicted felons.

I read somewhere that they wouldn't buy Raven Arms built handguns because if they were recycled they would contaminate the metal being melted. So I guess I'll hang on to my little .25. As long as it don't contain polyunsaturated fat, or triglycerides, or stuff like that.
Wish to hell I could be the guy sorting out all the different guns the people bring in. Cherry pickin would surely ensue.

After my wifes uncle died her aunt dropped off several long guns.

Most are junk bolt action shotguns that have been standing in the corner of the garage for a couple years.

I live 100 miles southwest and thinking about cashing in and going to Cabelas there and get a scope with the proceeds.

I wonder if you have to be a Chicago resident?

There was a story in the ISRA paper about a group that took broken and rusted worthless handguns from a whole bunch of gunshops from all over Illinois. The shops donated the **** guns. They took them up to Chicago and got thousands of dollars for all of them.

Then they used the money to buy brand new, quality guns for shooting clubs to use on "new shooter days." Neat!

Some years ago I participated in a gun buyback in a midwestern city sponsored by a catholic church, which paid $40 for complete weapons, $20 for incomplete weapons. I expected to find a long line of repentent gangbangers turning in their Tec 9s. Silly me... what I found was a long line of housewives and old gaffers with armloads of rusty .22 rifles, single shot shotguns, and bits and pieces of long arms, all covered with cobwebs and rust.

As I waited, one old coot walked along the line with his .22 trying to trade it for a pistol--"Come on," he said. "They'll pay you the same for a rifle. Help me out." In front of the church an enterpreneur had parked his pickup with a big sign reading CASH FOR GUNS.

I had an #1 Mk* Enfield--in those days worth about $50 in original condition. My rifle had the barrel hacksawed off. I'd substituted a cutdown forearm for the original and removed every part I could manage, substituting bolts from my junk box to hold it together using crush fits. The buyback 'expert' pronounced my Enfield a 'jap rifle' and gave me my $40. He tossed it on a pile which contained the most abysmal collection of firearms junk I'd ever seen. I was lucky--shortly thereafter they ran out of money.

This experience made me a great fan of gun buybacks...(1)xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx (2) it channelled antigun monies to gun owners (3) it gave old coots an opportunity to trade for pistols at bargain prices.

I don't have many <$100 guns to contribute, so I'll pass. The perfect gun would be a black powder handgun I traded to a guy years ago. He didn't clean it after use and it rusted up for life, never to be shot again.

I've got a chrome plated Davis .22 mag. derringer . I'd sell it back to them in a heartbeat . I considered throwing it off of the Mississippi river bridge .

The city of Albany, NY did that a while back when some wanna be gang banger shot and killed a 10 year old girl. I remember the Albany DA and the mayor touting all of those dangerous looking old Hopkins and Allen and Iver Johnson break open .32's and .38's next to a couple of Marlin lever actions and a bolt action shotgun. We had a poster of it up at one of the gun shows, the Gun Buy Back / Antiques Roadshow.

It's enough to make a body cry! A local news segment showed film of a tub of turned-in handguns. Among the pieces of junk there were quite a few gorgeous S&W and Colt revolvers. And these people were given $75?

It was nasty weather here so the wife and I drove to the city with four worthless shotguns.

One was missing a bolt, so i didn't know if they would buy it, they did.

Had a nice lunch and came home with $300.00. Actually was a fun day.

I took three pretty worthless guns to one a few years back... they advertised 100.00 gift cards to a local food chain- Acme click or "tennis shoes". I thought I would convert the worthless wallhangers into steaks n roasts. When I got there I hear the magic words in the pay line of "acme click or DICKS SPORTING GOODS giftcard?".... hmmm dicks as in dicks withthe gun department.... I stopped on the way home and got a nice savage heavy barrelled-thumbholed walnut stocked 17hmr with a scope on sale for the 300.00

Worked for me I had a .17 on my acquisition list for a while but it was on the bottom but this was too good to pass up. It warms my heart every time I think of that little rifle

I went back the next day with some more but they had run out of funds and shut down early

Just saw in the paper where they took in 4000 guns.

The gun buyback provided a $70 gift card good at one of the local department store chains.

A woman was beat to death by a frying pan weilding drug addict when I lived in the bay area. I don't remember them having a frying pan buy back.

Just saw a short news (?) blurb on the LA gun buy back.... what looked to be mostly junk but did see a few really nice revolvers and what looked to be a Garand (just a brief glimpse). I'm sure that more than just a couple of these will never become rebar.

Chicago Compensation was: "Assault weapon" - $100, Handgun - $75, BB Gun, etc. or gun "lookalikes" - $10. Supposedly 4000 guns turned in. No breakdown as to what category the bulk of the guns fell into.

Second City Cop reports:

Of the 4,050 firearms traded in for gift cards, there were 55 assault weapons and 3,335 handguns, along with 660 replicas, according to the Office of Police News Affairs.

During the first half hour of the gun buyback program this morning, more than a thousand weapons were turned in, officials said. The department offered up to $100 for weapons handed over.

In announcing the early results and encouraging others to take part in the day-long event, Chicago Police Supt. Jody Weis announced that 1,335 guns were turned in during the first half hour, including what looked like two hand grenades.
"What are we doing with hand grenades in Chicago?" Weis asked, incredulous.

Instead of giving them cash for guns, maybe they should buy NRA memberships for them. I can't remember reading about an NRA member doing a gang-bang drive-by. Problem solved.

Also no effort to see if any of these guns were reported stolen so they can be returned to their lawful owners.

No surprise there.

This is to erroneously suppose that "the antis" have anything but contempt for truth, facts, honest statistics, and so forth. We all know that there is an inverse relationship between gun ownership and crime, and that these buy-back programs, if analyzed in the cold light of day, might easily be proved to encourage violent crime by depriving probable victims of affordable implements of self-defense. It's a disgrace that big-city police departments participate in these charades, certainly knowing full well their futility, and faulty premise.

90% of Chicago police despise Daley. Remember: The boss may be an AH, he is however THE BOSS. Hiring an ex FBI guy as top cop was a real slap in the face to the dept. Not to mention the guy (Jody W.) is really out of his element. The gun bashing as we all know is a technique/attempt to steer the mindless libs from the real issues.
