Please take care of your four legged friends this Holiday.Dogs cats and crawlers.

I have to give my big boy "Doggy Downers".

This weekend could be a long one and I wish everyone will safe.

I have to say that I really don't enjoy the 4th any more because of the terror it causes our animals.

We live outside of town but still have close neighbors. For 51 weeks of the year, that is great. But many of them can't satisfy themselves with 'normal' fireworks and have to obtain the biggest, loudest ones they can find--stick of dynamite loud.

Our neighbor's dog was locked in a pen while they were gone and they asked us to feed him. That poor dog tore his lips to pieces and lost some teeth trying to bite his way out of that pen when the fireworks started going off.

My Border Collie is deathly scared of BANGs! Thunder, guns or fireworks will drive him to the bath tub for some reason. I guess he feels safe there! I sometimes shoot my P22 in the back yard. He comes running out with me the 1st time. After the 1st shot I turned to see how he reacted & he was gone. He opened the gate & went to the front door!

I'm stuck with 2 Maltese Terriors after Joan passed in 2008. Oldest [Pearl] is scared to death when the fireworks start. But Valentina [Daughter] doesn't care. Poor dog just shivers & moans. I look foreward to Independance Day but Pearl sure doesn't.

I have three dogs of the same litter and two are scared and one is not. I am fortunate enough to be able to shoot at my backyard range but in consideration for the dogs I don't shoot there much.

I agree with all. I know the 4th is a time for celebration, but I really dread it. Two of my neighbors shoot off fireworks till all hours of the night. Now, if this was in the country, I wouldn't be quite as upset about it. But it's not. Molly, my 6 y/o mini Doxie is afraid of the bangs, and barks and get's very nervous. Angel, the senior mini, is very hard of hearing, but can hear the bangs and it scares the beejeebers out of her. Not to mention I have to pick up all the burnt rockets out of my yard and pool the next day. Between that and the fear my girls go through, I don't look forward to the 4th. Or the 5th, or 6th...... They continue for at least a week after the 4th. Y'all be safe this weekend!

Fireworks got into full swing last night. My dogs did well. I was wishing it would rain today to wet the roofs down. The economy and lack of money has slowed the fireworks purchases around here. There are lots of Illinoisans filling there trunks with the junk though.

Our Golden Retriever, Rusty, would get really cranked up and ready to go when I picked up a shot gun. If I had a rifle he just wasn't interested. That was one smart doggy!
Fireworks didn't impress him one way or the other though.
A good friend rescues Border Collies. One of them will chase, and catch, bottle rockets. They go off in her mouth occasionally but that doesn't deter her in the least - She seems to LOVE it!

My ex wife used to do that too! I was tryin to get her up to hand grenades.

I do have one gun dog, but the other dog is not. I have a dog crate that I will bring in the house and put both dogs in it. Even though the booms are still loud, they are muted greatly and the dogs keep each other company. JMHO.

Me and my dogs will retire to the basement and they will lie next to me in my oversize recliner while we watch TV or snooze, which ever seems most appropriate at the time.

Our best friend is RUGER, a shepherd/ridgeback mix. He can be 97 pounds of lovable, or he can be 97 pounds of muscle with solid ivory teeth. He does not like fireworks, gunshots do not bother him, but when the fireworks go off he gets angry and first barks (from a dog that never seems to bark), then he wants to go looking for the fireworks and bite something. Some day I just might let him do that. People are getting really irresponsible with fireworks these days, not to mention those who shoot guns into the air, possibly we do not teach Newtons Law in school these days(I really am kidding we do not teach ANYTHING in schools these days).

Oh yeah, we previously had 2 labs, black and yellow, they were named Smith and Wesson.
Before them was a great shepherd named Colt.

Interesting, my wife and I were talking about the reaction of our current dog as opposed to our previous two family members. All have been toy poodles. The first one hid under the bed, the second barked and the third, Scout, "the wonder poodle" justs ignores fireworks and the noise completely.

I had a German Shepard that was the same way and my parents Airedale paid them no attention as well. Still, fireworks drive some pets wild. For me, a little George Dickle "white label" and I'm fine.

Bubba loved guns and fireworks. He would snatch a roman candle out of your hand and run around with it as it shot flaming balls everywhere!! He too would try to catch bottle rockets. Guns........ pull one out and he would start to quiver with excitement cause he knew he was going to go to the marsh and get to do fun stuff.

Gawd I do miss that dog.

Otis on the other hand hates both guns and fireworks-so out of deference to him-we don't do fireworks and I won't take him anywhere he might be exposed to gunfire. Course that may have someting to do with how he came into our lives-when some ----- shot him through and through with an arrow

Oh well a hapy and prosperous 4th to all!!

The Mrs and I live close to a military bombing/gunnery range, my 2 German Sheps are like night and day, Riley disapears into the house and hides at the first concussion wave and Max is as calm as an old vet. Riley hears stuff that we can not hear and it sets her off. She came to us at 1 1/2 years old and must of had a bad time with loud noise. Max has been here since he was 10 weeks. Thunderstorms driver her crazy and we found that a dose of OTC melatonin (3mg for her size of 70#s) really calms her down without the dope/sleepy effect. This was a vet recommendation that we picked in our travels. Happy 4th to all Americans and a Blessing to all our troops in harms way. GOD Bless!
