Take a look at "Eagle Crafts" patterns... they are about the easiest to follow and generally turn out pretty well.

Morning,,

Ahhhh, my time period!! A really interesting time in our history.

IF you want a really nice, and historically correct pattern, check out J.P. Ryan's stuff. Or, if you'd rather just buy a set of clothing, and call it good, check out James Townsend and Sons. OK quality, decent look, and not too expensive. Of course, if your son is just a wee one, then you'd probably go for the Eagle patterns route, as their stuff is very inexpensive. Not the most historically correct stuff, but definitely will cut it for a Halloween costume. I'm sure he will have a good time, no matter which way you choose to go! Take care, and God Bless!

A frontiersman impression is somewhat more free form, they weren't as fashion conscious and no Army Regulations to bind them. There are some notable differences between the F&I War and the Revolution in townsmen's clothing.

Yes, J.P. Ryan has some awesome patterns. They aren't for someone with "limited experience" though. They can get technically fairly involved. Great results though.

For Halloween...

Get him some painters pants and cut off the bottom of the leg's a few inches under his knees. Cut out all the pockets. Sew the bottom of his now breeches and leave a slit on the outside. Install a horn or pewter button on each side. Now, make him some wool leggin's a few inches higher then the buttons. Buttonhole the leggin's and use the breech's buttons to hold them up. Get him a pair of mocs and make sure the leggins cover the tops so you don't see the laces. Hit some thrift shops and find a cotton vest that would fit and modify it to look like a original. Find a felt hat and recut the brim, then steam mold it to a new form.

You get the drift...you can spend a incredible amount of money at Townsend or you can make do...

Some of my period gear was custom made by the best in the business. It is historically and period correct. Even the thread counters give it a nod.

But for what your describing, you can pull off a pretty good representation using nothing more than your imagination.

HI, bummer,

No, but that's the place where my F&I persona lives. Lots happening in that area during the F&I War.

I agree with Gizamo, in that for you purposes, it's probably much better to make do. He's sent some great suggestions, and they should work perfectly for your son. MUCH less expensive, too, than making something that will not even fit him in less than a year! Take care, have fun, and God Bless!

Every Good Wish,
Doc
