Default Putting name on grips

What do you think about the practice of putting your name/date on the inside of your grips?

I've mixed feelings.

First it does help to identify your gun, second it provides a bit of history/mystery when you find one marked that way.

But then you have 'defacing' something that might be collectible.

Does finding someone's name, in pencil or marker on the inside of a grip affect it's value? Especially cokes or other rarer styles.

I've penciled a couple but stopped because of conflicting thoughts on it.

What do you guys say?

I'd rather find a name in pencil on the inside of the stocks, than have it electro-penciled on the grip frame.

It probably doesn't hurt the value of the stocks, but what's the point? Record the make, model and serial number and that trumps anything else.
