Commercial M1 Carbine
I picked up this commercial Plainfield M1 carbine about a month ago. Plainfield was out of Dunellen, NJ and while they never served in the US Military, several police agencies had these and they were shipped occasionally to foreign and 3rd world countries. Plainfield's have even been seen in some CMP shipments. This one has no import markings, but with the cost being half of a US Military issue gun, I decided to give it a try. I took it out this morning since I have a D-Day shoot this weekend where I want to enter this gun to sight it in. Using Sellior & Bellot 110 grain FMJ, this gun isn't too bad for accuracy. I can probably do a little better with handloads if I decide I want to try some. After I sighted it in it did pretty well in rapid fire on a silhouette target, definitely would ruin your day.

Dad's got an Iver Johnson he's had for years. It's a fun little gun. Ammo prices and costs of originals now (mostly this) have hurt the little guns popularity.

Plainfield is about the only commercial carbine I would buy...used to have one, and it was a good shooter.
I shoot groups only slightly larger at 100yds with my CMP Inland...you ought to stretch out the range a little, it might surprise you!

Plainfields and Iver Johnsons were often all GI parts save the receiver. Usually decent guns.

I have a Universal (yes, I know...) but mine has been pretty good and accurate. I used to consider it my "Urban Assault Rifle" due to the ammo.
Now that the ammo is getting rare and expensive, my SHTF rifle is a Mini-14.
Too bad they really don't make the old carbine like they used to.

Ammo is not that rare, or expensive...I have ordered Prvi FMJ for $19/50rds, Prvi SP's for a couple dollars more.
Of course, it isn't like the days when I owned the Plainfield I mentioned above...used to be able to buy Lake City spam cans of clipped ammo on stripper clips pretty cheap...wish I still had a few.

There were quite a few companies that made post war carbines because a lot of GI's weren't able to bring theirs home for whatever reason. Many of these found their way into law enforcement arsenals and were usually a pretty good patrol rifle. As previously mentioned a lot of them were made with GI parts simply because there were a lot of parts around. Kahr M1 carbines have been recently produce in Israeli plants for sale to the U.S. They are good guns, but a little pricey. Springfield made a few high quality carbines with a metal handguard. I have seen only a few of them and except for the handguard they look all GI. CMP is getting to the bottom of the barrel with theirs but a few nice ones can still be had if you live close enough to one of their stores and can go there and hand pick one. I don't know yet who (CMP says it won't be them) will get them, but South Korea is getting ready to sell over 50,000 carbines that we had sold to them. Had they been loaner guns CMP would have gotten them. With the bunch CMP sold and is selling and the South Korean stuff, if it comes here, there should be enough for anybody that wants one. I've owned quite a few carbines and still have three left. One of my favorite all time shooters.
