Default '02 Chevy Silverado 1500 V8

Just bought an '02 with 69k miles on it...my first Chevy truck. When I start it up, I get a engine knock/valve noise. Is that normal? It goes away in less than 30 seconds. Anyone else have that issue? Thank you!

The 4.8, 5.3, and 6,0 had a cold start knock caused by the piston skirt. Did not shorten the engine life, but the noise would last until the engine warmed up. Some of the horizontal 5.0, 5.7 oil filters would drain back into the pan if a cheap filter was substituted.

Chevy V8's have had the same pistol slap noise on cold start up for over 20 years....no issue, live with it. Use quality oil and a name brand oil filter and you'll be good.

My 2002 1500 has what sounds like valves tapping on a cold start. It goes away almost immediately. No problem for 75+k miles so far.

Same here on my '02 with the 4.8L. It is an ST 4x4 Ext Cab fully loaded. It just turned 133K and runs as good as the day I bought it new. I just live with the piston noise at start up. I run Mobil 1 5W-30 and WIX filters (oil, fuel, transmission) K & N FIPK air filter and Car Quest carbon impregnated cabin air filters. Treat it well and it will give you many more years/miles. I also have an '88 K-5 Blazer with a 350 (5.7L for the young'uns here). It has the same piston slap as my '02. The K-5 has over 400K and still runs strong.

We like ours. I have always had good luck with chevy & gmc trucks, except got t-boned in one and had another stolen. The wifes is a 2001 chev silverado, the orange one and mine is a 2000 gmc sierra. Somebody tell me why they quit makeing the 350 engine? Those were the best. More power and as good mpg! Hers has the little 305 v-8, mine the bigger 327. Mine has more power and they both get the same mph. Why does anyone buy those little engines?

The 5.3 start-up rattle is normal. I had a 2001 Tahoe that was just starting to do it after 20k miles.

The 350 was past its sell-by date on meeting emissions. In theory the 5.3 should have its equal in terms of gas mileage, but Chevy delayed replacing the 4-speed auto then started giving all their trucks inter-galactic gearing to look better in the bogus CAFE tests. As the torque of the 5.3 came in a tad later than the old 350, this results in more downshifts in real driving and at best similar gas mileage to the 350 or often worse. WHat I did like about the 5.3 was its free revving nature. The 350 developed asthma above 2500 rpm, whereas the 5.3 would happily rev to the redline like a Corvette.

My Tahoe was doubly screwed in that it was CA emissions equipped. I have a sneaking suspicion that low rev "fuel-up" for acceleration is almost banished by the CA regs. Never again will I buy a CA emission vehicle, its 45 (?) or 50 state or the dealer can keep it. Unfortunately, the NV dealers in Las Vegas seem obliged to take CA spec vehicles from GM because of the supply chain. The same is true for Mazda of all people, too. I had a salesman try and tell me I had a have a CA spec car in Las Vegas. I hung up on him, eventually. His loss, I bought a Volvo.

You're supposed to have a driveshaft clunk to go along with the start up rattle.

I had a new short box standard cab 92 sierra gmc. I had the 350 with a 5 speed manuel. That truck was a firecracker. Powerfull almost unbeliveable mpg. You did stay busy shifting in traffic though. Thats the one I got T-boned in by a idiot returning from a AA meeting. I found out I was his 4th accident in a month! I really miss that truck!

It's irritating, but normal. All you can do is turn the radio up and drive it like you stole it.

GM IMO really needs a new engine block.
Pushrod V8's are pretty much done in the face of emissions standards. Its honestly impressive that theyve gotten this far. From here on in making the grade will require OHC for its added operating precision and VVT for its zero to hero optimum operating power band.
Ford has already embraced this in the modular V8's Chevy still faces the transition. that is why the 350 is gone, the only option you have is to shrink the engine to meet specs.

Smile 2001 Silverado

Only other thing if you have not noticed is that the transmission does not shift up until it is warmed up. Bought mine in December in Minnesota and the first morning I thought I had a lemon...... no major problems in the 5 years since then.
