SMALL SAFE AT COSTCO
I was in Costco last week and they were selling a small (about 2-1/2'x2'x2' I'm guessing) "Winchester" safe for $299. It's sort of a silver color with an electronic keypad. Fire rated and fairly hefty (I think it said 200lbs). Way better than most of the comparably-sized safes I've seen. I'm looking at it to go under the desk in my home office for handgun storage, and wanted to know if anybody has any experience with it.
I understand this is not a Ft. Knox, etc. and technically is considered an RSC and not a true safe, but this is more to keep the guns from my kids than for theft protection. I've got a "Winchester" (made by Liberty) long gun safe I bought from Costco that I'm quite happy with, but the last couple of rifle/shotgun purchases are crowding out the handhelds. Don't have a lot of space/$ for another full-size safe right now.

If you can carry it in a bad guy can carry it out. Bolt that puppy down. I drilled oversized holes into the slab, filled them with two part 4,000 lb epoxy and then in torqued 3/8" lag bolts. Needless to say when I sell, the safe goes with the house. (o;

It takes only minutes to cut the side out of those gun safes with a diamond saw.

true, very true, however, MOST thieves will take a safe with them if they can....after 34 years on the job I rarely see a residential safe peeled.....in fact, the only ones I have seen peeled have been taken and peeled, not peeled in place...takes longer than most burglars are willing to take.
Any safe beats NO safe...make 'em hard as you can to steal

I've always felt a good creative hiding place is better than a safe. A safe is easy to find, and once they find it, they know something valuable is in it.

I open, service, and repair safes for a living.
Most crooks use the tools you leave around. They don't bring much for tools with them. And they certainly don't have the time to use power tools.
That being said, I have seen 1000 pound gun safes that were not bolted down disappear never to be seen again.

If it is a Fort Knox, it will serve you well. Bolt it down and forget about it.

Any safe beat's no safe! Secureing it to the floor and wall is a really good idea, all of my safe's are bolted down. Most of our burglar's around here these day's seem to be smash and grabber druggie types and most any old safe will do but there's always that exception to the rule. I retired from the Pa State Police (civlian employee) and was amazed at first at the really heavy thing's the vermin would lug off!

For your needs I believe this safe will do just fine.
