41 years ago today.
I began my LEO career as a 21 year old rookie. I rode the night shift a couple of weeks with a training officer before being sent to the academy. I got home a few days before Hurricane Camille came through. Good way to start a career. It gave me something to do for the next few weeks just as Katrina did 36 years later. Things sure have changed a lot. We have more and different equipment now but the cars were faster in 1969. Before anybody asks, I'm planning on staying two or more years before I retire.

Time sure does fly doesn't it? You have provided a very honorable and important service to the public. Stay safe for the next two years and enjoy a well deserved retirement.

Congratulations Charlie! I'll tell you how retirement is going, so you can decide for yourself if its a good idea. Now at day 4 I'm not so sure. Even my boss called me today and wants me back. I guess that's a good sign.

Way to go Charlie! A toast!
I probably could have found two clinking glasses if I searched hard enough but you get the point.

Charlie, if you can take full retirement now, it might be a good idea. Governments everywhere are cutting pensions and pushing back retirement age and cutting benefits. Very few have had the guts to cut longterm employees pensions but some have (Colorado for one) and it will be a trend. The ol' state and local government pension is not what it was even five years ago, and us lawyers are figuring out ways and finding old antibellum emergency rules that let the governments dump costs and ditch contracts that the employees never imagined could go. Of course, they will soon not only be cutting current employees, but cutting retiree benefits - claiming poverty. The largest source of income for state and local revenues nationwide is now the federal government. You probably are on top of all this, but that is my courtesy heads up. Rick

Congrats my friend, I should send you some Beer Nuts to celebrate. The day you mentioned I was 2 weeks short of being drafted. I was drinking as much beer and _____, you know what I mean.

Congratulations. Enjoy every day, they slip away pretty fast, as you probably well know. Until your post, I had forgotten that I started officially on July 1st, but it was a Saturday and I didn't go to work until Monday. The Captain asked where I had been as I was supposed to be there on the 1st. That was my first clue that this was a 7 day a week profession!
Wishing you as many more as you want.

Good job, Charlie. Thanks for being willing to put it all on the line every day.
Have you worked with the same Department all those years?

Thanks for the dedication and the delightful way of sharing with the rest of us what you deal with daily.
And while I loved my career, retirement ~whatever you may have heard about it~ is WAY better than you think it's gonna be....

I'm calling BS on that. Charles will 'retire' when they put him in the ground. We tend to really like doing what we can do better than almost anybody else.
And that's Charlie . . .

Thank you for your service all these years. There's not a lot of folks with that kind of dedication any more.
Stay safe out there.

Well done on 41 years of service. I am at a little over half of that. I doubt I will have the staying power to make it to 41. The walls are getting taller and the ground is getting harder.

Thank you for your service, Charlie.
The only thing between us and the jungle is the lawman. People who don't know that have simply never been anywhere that did not have lawmen.
Please apply the terms to the people of both sexes that wear the badge. Somehow, 'lawperson' and 'lawpeople' just doesn't work.

My thanks and appreciation for your many years of service to our community . Charlie, I also put on a blue uniform and badge about the same time and worked a crime prevention two man car in a midwestern department at the same time you started. The difference between you and I is, you stayed and I moved on to another career. Charlie, I know the sacrifices the job requires, and my respect and thanks go out to you! All my very best, Joe.

Nice work Charlie. Now, maybe in a couple of years, you can crank out the book that is cooking inside of you. I'd like to read it.

Amazing flapjack just hit the like button on this post or I would never have seen it. It's over six years old. I actually made it about two and a half more years after this post and am now retired for four years. I'm really enjoying it. Health is mostly good. I've got plenty to do with my little farm, fishing, hunting, gunrunning (legally of course), grandchildren, chasing old stuff (not women, I still like the younger ones under 65) and going to a gun show or target shooting almost every week. I went to the last Tulsa show but missed Louisville this weekend as I've got to be up there in a few weeks for a wedding. I get an occasional call from a former co-worker wanting to know where someone is or to refresh their brain on something that happened a few decades ago. But I mostly don't have to deal with the idiots anymore. The ones that were in my hood are mostly serving long sentences. I still carry when I tractor or ride the mower because I don't always know when they are getting out. Some of the taters are out of the ground and I just gambled a little and planted purple hull peas a little earlier than I usually do. The freezer is full of fish, produce, venison, wild rabbit and other critters. I'm good.

I'm glad you came back since I wanted to 'like' your first post but didn't want to look the fool when I saw the date.
It sounds like you have retirement figured out and are enjoying it.
Good for you! I am too.

Good to hear from you again Charlie. Miss your stories. I retired in 1988 with 38 years with Ma Bell, climbing poles & stringing wire. I became obsolete about that time so pulled the plug. Been so busy I don't know how I ever got thru those 38 years. Not enough hours in the day.

Well that's a good problem. My DILs have stopped at a total of 7 and I sure wish I'd get another. Been thinking about snatching a cute one out of a restaurant. Is she gonna have a boy this cycle? Ya know girls are cute but you can do stuff with little boys. Corrupt them, show them how to shoot or light fireworks and all.

And another good story. My littlest one is now 4. Back when he was 2 his mother was out in the yard working and she suddenly realized he was missing. She ran out front to find him, only to discover he was peeing on the driveway. She asked him what he was doing and he said "Gwrampa does it". Ok, I didn't get in trouble. It was her father that taught him how to go pee outside. He's being corrupted by both of us. Fine young boy.
