Default Some reminders from your pet....

A Pet's 10 Requests...

1. My life is likely to last 10-15 years. Any separation from you is likely to be painful. Please take time for me when you can.

2. Give me time to understand what you want of me

3. Place your trust in me. It is crucial for my well-being.

4. Don't be angry with me for long and don't lock me up as punishment. You have your work, your friends, your entertainment, but I have only you.

5. Talk to me. Even if I don't understand your words, I do understand your voice when speaking to me.

6. Be aware that however you treat me, I will never forget it.

7. Before you hit me, before you strike me, remember that I could hurt you, and yet, I choose not to bite you.

8. Before you scold me for being lazy or uncooperative, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I'm not getting the right food, I have been in the sun too long, or my heart might be getting old or weak.

9. Please take care of me when I grow old. You too, will grow old.

10. On the ultimate difficult journey, go with me please. Never say you can't bear to watch. Don't make me face this alone. Everything is easier for me if you are there, because I love you so.

I ran across it on an IDPA site (go figure), it had the same effect on me, made me think of my dogs - past and present - so I thought I'd share.

I know what you're talking about Iggy, my bulldog passed a couple of years ago, had her almost 10 years. My bullmastiff will be 10 in Sept, he's in good shape but I worry about him, that's getting old for the breed.

I've got a Sheltie that had her 15th birthday yesterday. She's durn near blind, can't hear anything except when I open a can of dog food, but she ain't got the memo that she's an old dog yet. So we're still chuggin' along.

Default After 12 years

Our daughter had to put down her 12 year old dog in June. It was rough on her. He swam the high mountain ponds, hiked in the hills, road the sled, traveled every where she could take him. We kept him while she was out of the country for months at a time. Never seen another dog that was so loved and protective of it's master.

I am on three days of vacation-time so my family can go out of town wile I dogsit. The family (and I) couldn't stand the thought of our dog being left alone at night, especially since people are starting to shoot off fireworks.

Thanks WC145. That is touching.

I believe pets are "for life".

We had an Australian Terrier that developed diabetics. The last three years of his life he had to have insulin injections...every twelve hours. That was just something we had to do.

We now have a five year old "rescue" greyhound. She has developed an autoimmune disorder that causes her toe nails to fall out.

I just take this in stride. She will need medication...every eight hours....for the rest of her life.

When you accept the dog, or what ever, you should accept them just like a child. They are yours....forever.

Default I Wish I Hadn't Read That

I had 19 years with my critter. She was not doing too good there nearing the end. Five plus years have passed and that post made me weepy all over again. That Tortoise Shell Calico was a dang fine cat.

Just lost my German Shepard 3 weeks ago. The old boy was a little over 15 and you can be sure that I was there holding his head as he went to sleep. Our Siberian Husky is 14 and almost blind and deaf but still eats good and doesn't seem to hurt. Not looking forward to losing him but we know it won't be to much longer. It always hurts.

I lost Casper, my nearly fourteen year companion, over a year and a half ago. Last summer, my current vet 'found' a flamepoint siameese that looked like his picture. Like Casper, Elmer is an aggrivator. Casper got off the bed that night to hack up a hairball - and had a stroke, blowing a pupil and becoming stiff on one side. He laid on my bed next to me in his death throes and tried to purr as he breathed his last. My vet said there was nothing anyone could have done. I buried him that AM. Below is Casper, who loved chocolate, helping to distribute candy at our last halloween:

My old vet gave me Delilah, a snub-tailed orange tabby kitten. She likes to help me read my e-mails, threads, etc:

We acquired a very sickly black kitten - named him Bob, although 'HD' would have been more appropriate - we would spend our HD TV savings on him! One of his vet trips found him finding a good friend - Steve - a grey tabby - then - almost a year ago - Elmer arrived. Elmer likes to read my old quantum mechanics texts... strange cat! Oddly, he likes my dollar store readers:

Seven indoor cats - two huge cat boxes - 27+# pail of litter/week - 12# cat food/week. Never mind the vet bills. They are our children. Each one is different, from the brothers, Jake and Samson, saved as abandoned kittens the Sunday after 9-11, to Katie, the 15 yr old reclusive Manx my aunt gave us before her death. The four young ones, all <2 yr old, are a 10-18 yr commitment on our part. For the Joy our Lord has seen fit for them to provide us, their care is a small cost... okay, that's not what I was saying in the wee hours when, barefoot, I found a cold & wet hairball!

As I get older I worry about me dying and leaving my three dogs. I have a daughter who also is a dog lover and I hope she will step up if necessary.

You can easily judge someone by the way they treat their pets.

As I get older I like animals better than people sometimes.

Funny this thread should pop back up now. Yesterday I had Angus, my bullmastiff that I mentioned in post #4, to the vet for a check up. He's going to be 12 in a few weeks. The vet says he's about as healthy as a dog his age can be. He's slowed down quite a bit, a little stiffer in the mornings, can't hear or see as well as he used to, and he sleeps a lot. But, he's still good for an afternoon walk or a ride in the jeep and let's anybody that pulls into the driveway know exactly who's in charge around here. He's the best dog I've ever had. I know #10 will come sooner than later and I hate the thought, after all these years I can't imagine life without him.

When the dread #10 day arrives please consider having your or finding a vet. that is willing to come to your home. We have done this and I know that it makes a sad and stressful situation easier on your best friend and you. Thank you for this thread, kindness towards animals speaks volumes about a persons character. You guys are number one. Sonora

All these posted words have touched my heart with the memories of pets, some great and some just plain average, but all loved. My tears begin to dry and sadness of their loss is replaced with a smile and a warm feeling of having these pets and working animals in my life. WC145, thank you for your post.

This is what I did when I had to have Dickens, the Bengal cat that is my avatar put down about 3 years ago. He was only five and had been many trips to the vets fighting a battle against cancer. He was my best friend, and I always called him the son I never had. I just couldn't bring myself to take him back to the vets for that final trip.

My wife and I are dog lovers, we have two Rat terriers and they are a huge part of our family. We sometimes talk about how short their lives are and how much it hurts to lose one.

My Domino is always looking for me to pull up in my truck, and he greets me at the door.

My boys BuddyBoy and Domino (BooBoo)

about 4 years ago my best friend developed a growth on her spine and was unable to walk and was developing breathing issues. I could not let her suffer anymore. I was with her to the very end, I petted her face and talked to her then cried because she was gone. We had her cremated we spread her ashes in thw yard where she would lay and wait for me to come home from work. I have a golden retriever now she is 5 years old, and a shisu rescued from the shelter and a cat also rescued. They are some thing else, they are loving companion's. the dogs are always ready for a walk or a ride in the truck.

Thanks for posting this. I've been through it twice with my own dogs and once with a neighbor/good friend when he couldn't face it and his wife didn't want to go through it alone. I still got tears in my eyes even though it wasn't my dog.

There's still nothing better than the unconditional love and companionship of a pet............................................well maybe my S&Ws.

Something is wrong. Third time this thread has come back to life, and third time I can't see the keyboard. Snuggles will be gone a year in May. It still hurts. Snuggles is gone

Add me (edited... What autocorrect??) me to the list of those who suddenly can't see the screen so well. I recently said goodbye to the golden who is my avatar. The other dogs have helped but it's still painful in the extreme. He was my first and was always with me whenever I wasn't working. He was the best and I can't type any more. Thanks for sharing.

Ironically my fear of losing him over the years made the reality somewhat easier because it was something I didn't have to fear anymore. Cold comfort but there it is and ill take what I can get.

Thanks again for the OP.
