I don't think there's enough room under the hood for a Detroit Diesel, so I'll just stick with what I've got.

You guys. HEE HEE

The truck is a K1500 short bed, 1998, 125,000 miles. The last thing one would use for such but it's mine, I married into it so I use what I have. 305 V/8 Vortec, completely stock. 4 speed auto w/OD, .373 gears & 29" tires. Only mod is a heavy duty tranny cooler.

The logs are mostly red oak we cut from a clearing job which I loaded using an excavator/with thumb. I'll guess near 3 tons of wood. The trailer only has brakes on one axle so I take it easy. WV is up, down, & around so I get in no hurry & run the engine 'bout 2500 RPM mostly unless pulling a steeper hill then 3000-3500.

This all works but I'm a truck driver in a former life & understand such things. Local dealer has a Dodge, Cummins, 6 speed, 3500 with jake, which looks nice but for now, it's CHEVY.

I routinely pull a 34' slant load horse trailer with living quarters and fully loaded. Have gone on the scales at 28,000 pounds with my Chevy 3500 crew cab. Just blew the motor last month but it has 387,000 miles on the original motor so I am going to replace the motor. It is a 454 Vortec with a four speed auto tranny.

Here are two photos. One with me when I had just washed it. The other when I was pulling a LSU float for Mardi Gras. This float was 56 feet long, had 48 adults and four tons of beads on it.

Those trees were cut less than two weeks before loading so very green. The tires are D rated or 8 ply if memory serves. Gee Oldman45s truck weighs that empty. If you study those logs & imagine them split, that's more than a cord. My old Kenworth manual said to figure hardwood firewood at 6000 pounds per cord. I’m sure that’s a green weight.

Today I split for a couple hours. The wood is maple & cherry that’s been seasoned for 12 month. This load weighs half or less than the oak logs. I sell this to customers with small stoves who like short wood.

The trailer makes a huge difference, especially if balanced with the correct hitch height. I can haul a little over a cord an a half in my father's dump trailer with my 2001 Chevy 2500HD and it hauls it without any problems. Got the usual 12mpg hauling empty trailer, and 12 mpg with full trailer. Hauled 2 tons of wood pellets in same trailer, and didn't notice any difference in ride height or any problems hauling, which was funny being parked beside a Nissan Titan which had forty 40lb bags of marble chips loaded (1600lbs) and squatted right down. An impressive looking load my father hauled was 5 round hay bales weighing approximately 1500 pounds each with his 2007 Toyota Tundra, 1 in bed, 4 on flat-bed trailer.

Yikes! My Tundra would take one look at that load and the Check Engine light would start flashing.

Changed my photobucket account so some of the pictures were lost to the thread. I believe this picture was used for the first post.

Anyway, the ole truck is still going strong.

I would pick up crushed granite in my 95 Dodge 1500 4WD. Have them load the bed until the point where the leaf springs would start to flatten out. Drive up to the weight station to pay oh oh 1.5 tons. Only had to go 4 miles. Still have the truck still has the shocks I had than.

The wood while heavy wasn't really heavy as it looks. Those were dead trees cut as to prevent them from falling in the road way. That much green oak & hickory would have been way too much. Still I wouldn't have wanted to haul that load very far...........Creeker
