Default Central Markets in York & Lancaster, PA.

My daughter wants to go to the farmers markets in York or Lancaster, PA. I was wondering if one is better then the other or should we do both? She is interested in Amish crafts and food. She is going away to college in a few weeks and it looks like we will have to go during the week. Are we going to miss much by not going on a Saturday? Are there any good restaurants in York or Lancaster we should try for lunch? Something unique to the area that we can't get in the Wash. D.C. suburbs? Thanks for any advice. Waldo

Starve yourself all day and go to the Shady Maple in Earl, PA. It is the largest and (I think) finest smorabord restaurant I have ever eaten in. Try to get there on Wednesday for dinner, its prime rib night. All you can eat for $17.99. Remember, one plate for your meat course and one plate for everything else. Start practicing now to hold two dinner plates in one hand.

It's near the intersection of PA23 and PA322. The directions are on their web site.

Go. Really!

I was in Central Market in Lancaster quite some time ago, but I really would be surprised if it has changed much. It's located in a very old brick building which wasn't designed for expansion, and so the vendors are really packed in there. As I recall, I was there during the week also, and there wasn't any lack of activity. I don't recall any craft vendors there -only food. I bought some elderberry and blackberry jams from Schenk Farms -tremendous.

We ate at some sort of complex on the edge of town, and I'm sorry that I can't remember the name of it. The food was outstanding.

I'm sure you'll have a great time regardless of where you stop.

Andy
