Bear Attack
So momma bear attacks and rampages the campers in Montana and they trap and kill her. Got no problem with that. But.....then they take her kids for cryin' out loud who had nothing to do with momma's crime and lock them up for life at some zoo because "they have observed momma's behavior and might follow in her footsteps." That's not really fair...........heyyyyyyyyyyyyy I think they might be on to something

I watched the news last night locally.
I kid was arrested twice ( 17 years old ) and both were not murder crimes , but leading to it in my eyes.
The judge didn't think he needed to be jailed. So they let him off. The news team found him and he laughed at them pretty much.
Anyways, its kinda the reverse of what your saying. I can't believe they would lock up the cubs, but let this clown walk free.....

I agree that you have a good point, but getting it into law is another thing. Ask the Governor of Arizona.

It's a never ending cycle.
Within the last five days here a local youth (17) was shot and killed. The family said all the usual......"he just started turning his life around"....."he wasn't in no gang no more".....all the usual. His mother stressed that he was picked on because some of his friends were still in gangs. Then they showed the tribute poster of him. On the left he was looking thoughtfully at the camera in a scholarly sort of way. On the right a black and white photo of him shirtless, hat on sideways, sunglasses and flashing gang signs with his hand. It appears that even though he was no longer in a gang his mother was super proud of his gang association. And the police state that they don't know if the shooting was gang related. The had a car wash to raise money for his funeral. It was ended early when "some boys showed up holding guns". Of course they never think to call the police when that happens. Can't be snitchin' in the hood.
As a side note he has a 2 month old son at 17. His mother is 32, which means that she had him when she was 15.....pregnant at 14. And they wonder why the cycle continues on...........................................
I haven't seen any bears around here acting this way. I sure wouldn't mind making some trades for some though. I think the death rate would certainly drop.

I was just watching on fox about that muslem woman that is going to be stoned to death that was accused of adultry. Her lawyer has "dissapeared". The lawyers family has been jailed untill he comes out of hideing. Seems he hid because he is in fear of his life for defending her. And we deal with these animals?

Maybe, me either.

It's always the bears fault. So here we have a dead bear and two in the zoo because people were ignorant.
Sorry it's sounds callous, but I don't have any compassion for people who go out into the wild unprepared.
ANYTIME you disturb a sow with cubs, you WILL get the short end of the stick!

Don't totally disagree that people need to be aware and prepared in bear country. However, these people were asleep in their tents at 2:00 am when attacked. Unless they smeared themselves with chocolate and peanut butter (no food found in or around the tents) I believe this is an unprovoked bear attack.

In this case I would agree, based on the reports. But-again, if you want to sleep in Bear Country - there is always a chance of this.

I can't totally disagree either. But for a sow with cubs to attack, there had to be a reason.

I am just going to take a wild shot at this.
They were hungry.
OK, bears are territorial, and perhaps she smelled the campers and felt they were encroaching on her turf.

This is a couple of times now folks have posted on the forum about a 'sow and her cubs' and people coming between them. They must be reading different news stories that I saw. The people were asleep not doin' notin'.
They then used the dead guy's tent over the trap to get the sow. You think the tent attacked her?
I sure would like to know the brand of tent, cause I wouldn't use that in bear country.

Bears are wild animals. Period. Sucks but that is the way it is. Who knows "why" this happens, but it is the risk.
We have been camping in the same area, Sequoia National Park, for over 30 years. Black bears roam the area, and every morning at about 2am, at least one makes thier rounds through the camp. This is a private group camp.
Here is a visitor from 2006.

I'd like to take Congress camping in Lamar Valley, Yellowstone National Park, but first dip them in honey and oats.

If you're gonna play in bear country, you better play by bear rules.
Them bears may not have had a chance to read the memo on not grabbing sleeping food.

+1 Sleeping in a flimsy tent in the middle of bear habitat isn't the smartest move.
In Yellowstone I saw tents set up within a mile of grizzly sightings. Why???
No bear spray, nor firearm for that matter, is going to help you at 3 am while fast asleep, bears don't knock first.

Just doing what bears do. When I worked in a hospital close to East Glacier, MT we got a guy that had been swiped at by a bear in the middle of the night. He was sleeping in his tent, heard some grunting and then got smacked in the head, all the while he was in his tent. That bear laid open his scalp fairly well. 4 really nice lacetations. I find it kind of amazing how clean the cuts were, those claws must be plenty sharp.

Based on the theory that the most accurate news accounts come from near the site where the incident happened, here is a link to a lot of local coverage of the incident. This is from the Flathead Beacon in Kalispell, MT:

Here is some more newpaper coverage of the event. In the related section is an article about a couple of bears that have made it east to the Missouri River. The bears seem to have recovered enough to start moving into their traditional territory.
One of the places I used to bird hunt was quite a ways from the mountains yet a week after I hunted along the creek another hunter was mauled by a griz. You just never know where the bears are at.
They are spooky quiet also, for such a big animal they sure do move fast and light.

We deal with them because they are the "religion of peace", don't you know. Besides we don't want to offend them and be called 'crusaders', which is as bad as being called racist.

I was BS'ing with a rancher at a wellhead when he said he looked in the field and saw his bulls were out of place. He jumped in the 4 wheeler to round them up and as he came over the ridge realized he had 4 adult grizzlies and 2 cubs. He decided it was time for an eye appointment and spun it around fast. On the Eastern Rocky Mt front the first 50 miles East is Grizz country, not just the pines.

I heard something today at the gun club about possible forest fires pushing the bears from their normal area of operation. That could make them kind of testy and hungry.
Anybody else hear that?

I believe the Bear should have been given another chance expecially since she had young. She may have felt threatened in some way in which we'll never know. Anyway alot of people get second chances they should never get so what's wrong with a Bear getting a second chance? After all the bear didn't storm into someone's living room and demand cash!
