Thumbs up New family member

Picked this guy up about two months ago. He has blended very well with the family. Does very well with a 4 year old boy. Appropriately named "Max". As in "Mad Max". I think he's going to do well around the Firehouse household. This picture was taken July 5th, so it's about a month old. He is considerably bigger now. But still a mess.

I like him! But of course I like all dogs.

He has a look of youthful intelligence. He'll be a good one. Don't spoil him!

Talking Australian Cattle Dog, aka Blue heeler

Aloha,

You have an Australian Cattle Dog pup. He'll steal your heart with his
cute puppiness, once in the home, he'll take it over.

We have had 5.

If you have never had one before......

You're in for an Experience. Go to the cattle dog forums as soon as you can.

They are Smart, Strong, Intelligent, Troublesome, Extremely loyal, stick to you like velcro(aka velcro dogs).

He's going to be in the "terrible twos" sooner than you think.

He will be a challenge to you and the family. But, once he settles down, you'll wonder how you lived without him.

You have been Warned. Again, NEVER underestimate him. He will surprise you with his abilities.

Thanks for the tips. We had one years ago. He was a great dog but I had neither the time nor the room for such a wild horse. (So to speak). I gave him to an actual cattle rancher. I know they are very loyal and intelligent. And always ready to work. Or play. I look forward to his companionship for what I hope is a long time. Also, if you will, PM me some of those ACD forum links. Thanks!

Aloha,

Yep, Cattle dog pups are born white and get their "blue" or "red" colors in a few months after they have stolen your affection.

We visited our #4 dog 4 days after she was born and every Saturday afterwards until we took her home.

I put her on my chest and let her sleep there for up to 2 hours or until she woke up. She's Daddie's little(60 pounds) girl.

You can tell by looking into their eyes what they're thinking.....

They NEED to start training earlier than most dogs because they are so smart. They are Quick learners. Watch them at class and you can tell right away when they get bored. Ears up and looking at everything. When they get bored, they'll get up and do what interests them. They are also High Energy dogs and will drive you Nuts because they have a need or desire to do something.

Make sure the instructor Knows what a Cattle dog IS. Many don't and that's where trouble starts. They're Not your average dog. Smarter and better behaved than most kids you'll see at Wal-Mart.

Also, since our property has a 6' wall all around it, we let ours sleep inside and leave a door or 2 wide open so they can go out.

The Wife said if we didn't have them, she'd have to carry when at home because she wouldn't know if someone hoppped the wall and came into the property..... If they like you, they'll lick you to death. If you try to hurt "mom" or "dad", how fast can you climb a grease pole?
