I think I have come to a decision about my BP dilema
I contacted Cimarron Arms today and found I can order the BP guns directly. So my plan is after we return from the Dells I will order the 1858 Reminington Navy in .36 and the 1849 Pocket in .31.
I will then order the conversion cylinders made by R&D for both pistols, that way I can have the use of both versions depending on my mood.
I like the looks of the Colt copy but I think the topstrap on the remington will be a decided advantage.
Then I might be a real bad guy and orer a copy of the 1833 Dragoon saber or a D guard Bowie

Was at Cabela's yesterday and they had the 58 Army in both barrel lengths and no pockets but the catalog does have them.

Are you going to use heeled bullets in that .36, or have the barrel sleeved?
I'd opt for the use of heeled/outside lubricated bullets myself, or perhaps some hollow base wadcutters- -that way you can just stick back in your old percussion cylinder.

That would be my plan, I did check out the Cabelas guns, they use Pietta and some of the reviews have been less than good. Cimarron uses Uberti guns. Which seem to be the prefered make.
I would like to be able to use both cylinders, I plan on maybe buying a spare BP cylinder for each gun too.

I have always had good luck with the Piettas, but no matter which brand you settle on, you will likely have to do a bit of tinkering. Everything I have in blackpowder revolvers is Pietta with the exception of a Uberti Patterson and a Euroarms Rogers & Spencer. I've nearly got the collection, with exception of a Starr, Dragoon, Walker and Colt and Remington pocket models.
That's a little less than half of them. I need to take pictures of the rest.
I don't have any conversion cylinders...yet, but hope to, but I find so many good S&W's that need a home and other proverbial irons in the fire, I just never get around to it.

You'll love shooting them. I have a cabelas pietta 1858 in .44 that now comes along on every (recreational) shooting trip. I liked the topstrap too. My kids actually beg to shoot that instead of the .22s I bring along.

imjin138,
I own Piettas and Ubertis. The finish on the Ubertis is a little better but...my two Pietta Remingtons shoot to point of aim at 25 yards as do my two Pietta 1851 Navies.
The price of the Piettas and the above accuracy make them desirable to me.
However I also have a Uberti 1858 Remington .38 Special conversion. It also shoots to point of aim but it is not convertable to cap and ball.
If you get a cap and ball Remington in .36 and get an R&D cylinder then when you shoot the .38s you must use hollow base bullets to expand to the larger bore. A good source for proper black powder hollow based bullets is Buffalo Arms Company - We sell Swiss - Schuetzen Black Powder, Cowboy Guns, Buffalo Guns - over 7,000 Items!.
However the Pietta 1858 Remington I have in .44 cap and ball shoots to point of aim with both percussion cylinder and R & D .45 Long Colt cylinder. And the bore is .454 so it will handle most any .45 Long Colt bullet.
Good luck.
