Default Lack of Manners Rant here on the Forum

Really getting irked at the lack of manners with some of the newbies and even some of the younger regulars lately.
They post a WTB, or Request for Info or other thread. And when they get a legit offer from one of us or an answer to a question they do not even have the courtesy to respond, even if it is to pass on the item offered.
That really makes us long timers and old guys/gals anxious to even try to assist the next guy or gal. I have to admit that the guys are much more likely to do this than one of the ladies.
If this is how you were brought up and go through life I really fell sorry for you.
I am not perfect, but my Grandmother taught me to be polite and have manners.
Rant off.

Some people understand common courtesy and some don't. We see it in everyday life.

Don't let it bother you. Make a mental note and don't deal with them ever again.

As my dear old Irish grandmother used to tell my brothers and myself " Courtesy costs nothing ".

Another one of hers was " Don't tell them you're Irish or you'll never get the job ".

Oh, I've had a couple of respectful inquires answered with smart-alec remarks that were totally uncalled for - like a query wanting to know if a seller would consider selling the grips only on a gun that obviously wasn't selling; the only reply I got was something like, "as if that's gonna happen !" when a simple, "No, thank you" would suffice.

Things like manners, personal grooming, and initial respect for others used to be learned at mother's knee . . . now we're into the second or third generation of a good number of "citizens" that are clueless to this, having been raised by the TV or on the streets, not having been taught what mother herself obviously doesn't know.

When children became the precious, untouchable, without fault center of the universe it's only natural that the adults these larvae became are self-centered ingrates, since they were raised in an atmosphere where they were "special & worthy" without ever having to accomplish or be responsible for anything, and any anti-social behavior was ignored because they were "naturally testing their boundaries".

Before any of you who recognize your own kids but won't admit it start beating on me and telling me what wonderful adults they grew to be with no spankings, limits, or correction with real consequences - save your breath. I'm old enough and seen enough through experience and empirical evidence that you cannot prove me wrong or convince me I am.

One of the reasons that so many marriages don't make it these days is because of these mis-placed priorities. Because at some points in their lives they must be protected and done for, children can and must sometimes come first - but only temporarily when it comes to the place of respect and deference that husbands and wives owe each other. Too many marriages hit the rocks when the children are placed above the husband/wife relationship and common sense goes out the window. When the children take first place above your wife or your husband, you've asked to fail.

I haven't made any gun deals here in a long while, so I'm not privy to the problem to which you refer. I will go on record and say that on another board of which I am a member, there seem to be younger folks. These younger types have their problem children who have little respect for anyone or anything. It is refreshing to come back to this forum and experience respect, civility and manners.

Many of the problems with todays generation, and many of yesterday's for that matter, can be summed up in two words....entitlement mentality.

I disagree. I have had transactions with members here with both high and low post counts and have never had a problem. I always check the feedback on anyone I plan on doing business with but my experience is the membership here is a cut above.

Default My generation!!!

I believe you are correct for the most part. A large number of my generation does need to be taught some manners and respect for others. With that being said, we all are not this way, and I hope you will still give the benefit of the doubt on here, an d not judge based on number of posts. There are still some good young guys in this country!! I want to apoligize on the disrespectful's behalf, but that probably wouldn't help either. Anyway, I hope you have better luck in the future!!!!

LOL!

My mother taught typing and business subjects in high school for almost 30 years until the late '80s. While some of her students would argue that the Marine Corps lost the opportunity for an excellent female Senior Non-Commissioned Officer when Mom elected to attend a state teacher's college in the late 40s, the typing students to a person would attest to this day that both pinkies are well-utilized when typing. The "a" and ";" keys would agree.

Mom could repeatedly type 111 words per minute on a MANUAL machine without an error as recently as 10 years ago. Personal best was 118. She's 85 now and the keyboard still sounds like an MG42 machine gun, only much less noisy . . .

Thanks, it is hard to get them to even think about the possibility that they are ever wrong about any subject they know nothing about, but I have some new tactics that I have been itching to apply!!!!

Well put - I may be new, but I was raised right. Growing up, if I was disrespectful to any adult, I would wake up in the middle of next week.

The reason I like this site is, by in large most folks here are nice and respectful.....and if they are out of line.....The Monkey Jumps them

Because the letter "p" in pinky, the letter "a" in "air" and the question mark are typed with the pinky, along with the shift key needed for the "H" and question mark. If you had typed with your pinky in the air, you would have typed

how do you know my inky is not in the ir/

Thumbs down no response to freebies

I've given away free to some of those wanting to buy grips, instruction sheets/parts lists, grips screws and one box. About 3/4 of them never replied with a thank you or that they had received it. I quit doing that about a year ago.

I was dumb...now I'm just grumpy

One of the best lines from Big Jake, (John Wayne movie, hopefully not copyrighted), If you haven't learned to repect your elders, maybe it's time you learned to respect your betters.

A sad trend on this forum, especially in light of the fact that it has a rep for being one of the more cordial and respectful. To say so embarrasses me a tad, but I have to say that I've learned better manners since I joined this site a few years ago.

I'm grateful.

Thats how I'm starting to feel, and I'm only 25 years old! I realize an awful lot of my generation is mostly useless. But it's a direct result of their hippy off spring parents being mostly useless. I was taught respect and courtesy early on and it has paid off. I once had a sales rep accuse me of being rude and mean spirited to which my manager replied "You? You're the nicest guy here. Who does he think he is talking about?" and another time it got me a 2nd interview for an internship that I would've never had a chance at getting otherwise.

I'm 60 years old. I AM the hippie generation from which sprang 3 children who grew up, pretty much in the free love and nickel beer atmosphere. They all grew up respectful and courteous, and with common sense. I am kinda puzzled to what the hell went wrong with this last generation or two. Like one poster posted, entitlement is a real factor. Bad place to be.unlucky attitude to be in.
God will sort it all out soon enough i suppose.
Peace'
gordon.

What was that phrase out of Huckleberry Finn--"to light out for the territories"?

Cocked and Locked's response hit home with me regarding similar experiences. Since Jan. 1, I have sent items to 12 folks who posted a WTB or who were asking about what grip, etc. went with their new gun. I charged nothing for the items or shipping. Receive 4 responses, 3 for thanks (one was a hand written letter from a young lady in Montana) and 1 from a guy who said it really wasn't what he was needing, despite having sent pics to him before shipping. I don't know that I will quit doing it but it does burn me a little. Maybe it is some self-gratification on my part but I would like to know whether or not the item arrived.

I've had some of that. I've also had those who've been appreciative of the help I've offered. What was really off-putting for me was a thread in which I asked for clarification from the OP; that was ignored. Comments I made were ridiculed by someone else in the thread. Life is too short to deal with forum disagreements so I've greatly curtailed my posting. Not that it was very great in the first place.

The world has changed a lot in the past 20 to 30 years, probably more so than the changes in the previous 20 to 30 years. I deal with a lot of young people in the work force and, frankly, many of them just don't think the same way we do. It's not that they are discourtious, they were just never taught courtesy. It's not that they are immoral, they were just not taught morality the same way most of us were.

I'm always looking for young people who have "it", and those that do in this day and time can easily make their mark in this world because there is so little competition for them. Those who know what integrity is, the meaning of teamwork, and demonstrate common courtesy to others can easily excel these days. They're out there, just not as common as it used to be.

Hello All-

I think this is an important topic, and one with no easy answers. I would just like to express my appreciation for the great information & assistance that I have received here at this forum. The grade of person here is, in my experience a cut above what I have experienced at many other sites, (where rudeness, bravado & useless posturing are the norm.)

To those forum members that have been burned by rude and unappreciative members, all I can say is: don't let a few...or even a bunch of bad apples change the quality of man or woman that you are...it wasn't said by me, but: "Be the change you wish to see in the world..."

I realize that can be an expensive outlook...but most of the time a worthwhile one.

All the best to the S&W forum members...Be well & stay safe,

Mike

Can't we all just get along? No we can't! Ideally we could, but culturally it's not in the cards. It's not an idillic world.
We are the sum of all the good and bad we've been exposed to. I had a SUV of young ladies (loosly) continually "flip me off" yesterday with no provocation. I wondered how proud their parents would be? Product of their home environment or of the callous and rude media they are constantly being exposed to? And I still remember not to end a sentence with a preposition, but I did it anyway. I'm a rogue writer.
I've given, like many here have, a valuable karma to one I thought deserved without any thought of compensation except a polite "thank you".
That's all it takes, but the entitled, I guess, view it differently.
Then again, I could be wrong. My wife says I am, all the time.

I have a different take on it. I don't think that we have to be the product of our environment. It sure helps if one was raised with good manners and got a pop now and then on the rear when one didn't treat others with respect. But, I think people can be more considerate and polite, if they try. It just takes motivation and effort. A lot of folks, especially on the internet, take pleasure in being rude and ticking folks off. There are a lot of clods around who think that they are cool, but are really boors. I really don't have control over these folks and most aren't likely to change, so I ignore them and associate with them as little as possible. As far as dealing with them, all I can say, is get your money and forget it. When you try to help someone out by giving advice or giving stuff away, you have to ask yourself what your motivation is. If it's to get respect and gratitude, you're going to be disappointed most of the time. A buddy of mine is a retired high school principal and farmer. I think he has it right. He's favorite expression is, "People are pigs". Hopefully if I treat people with consideration and respect, it might get them to thinking. Maybe it could start a movement, but I really doubt it. I can only try to do the right thing most of the time.

IMO, it's the older generation(s) who need examination of their respect.

For the past few decades children have been increasingly more likely to be born out of wedlock, experience a broken family or become a latchkey kid. If little Johnny acts up in class he needs narcotics shoved down his throat to be a good little boy... arrested if an Aspirin is found in his backpack, or sent to a reeducation camp if caught drawing a gun. Their jobs are being sold to China and tens of $trillions of debt are being heaped on their back. -- Respect?

Amazingly enough, some of these same youngsters forget to say thank you.

Well, here's another thought: We as "conservatives" are generally not as politically active as the "socialist liberals". It seems most of our university's are breeding grounds for "progressive" mindsets. Was this the case in the years prior to 1947 when I was born? I remember being in grammar school in the "assembly hall" after a duck and cover exercise for some kind of talk about the reasoning behind the exercise. I'm thinking I was 9. There were so many kids there that some of us had to stand in the back behind the seated kids. EVERY assembly started with the ever present American flag with a spotlight on it and every one singing the Star Spangled Banner. One kid standing close to me was an idiot talking to another idiot during the singing. The gym teacher heard him and walked over and told the kid " A lot of my friends have died defending that flag" After that the kid got a slap in the face. When I mentioned it at dinner that night my mother said so what the kid deserved it. My father said pass the salt. (Dad was a WWII vet and called up for Korea, but fortunately didn't have to go.)

We seem to have let the whole thing just get out of control starting with JFK. We need SOME CONSERVATIVE million man marches PDQ. Look at the lack of support for our troops. Our industries should be putting people back to work with war production. WHAT IS GOING ON HERE. THEY'RE EVEN "CONSIDERING A MOSQUE IN NY?? We've turned into a nation of sheep, led by a shepherd, elected by the vast majority of the sheep.
