Default Need some help with Insurance for My Guns

I've kept my antique revolver collection in two big bank safe deposit boxes for years. I think I would like to bring them home and put them in the safe for easier access but need to insure them if I do. Any pros and cons or info you could give me would be appreciated.

No help here. I never had insurance on guns but sure could have used some as I been a big victim several times. That was before I had the safe I have. I am funny about insurance, dont claim that I am right. Insurance companys are in business to make money. They bet to their benifit. I say screw em, get the best safe you can and trust in God. I once had a huge loss of guns and LET my insurance woman talk me out of makeing a claim on them! MY BAD! She claimed my insurance on the house would go up huge or they would drop me etc if I didnt get a monitored alarm system. And this all came from a close friends wife that was my insurance agent.

I have some advice about insurance in general due to having a house fire several years ago which was a total loss...If you can buy a separate policy just on your guns that would be the best idea...You should have photographs of everything and at least 2 appraisals of their true market value because trust me the insurance company will low ball you...After the fire I thought we were in "Good Hands" as we had total replacement coverage but later found out what a scam insurance companies are...I had about $5000.00 worth of tools in a cabinet in the garage that were lost and they wanted a complete inventory of every tool, socket, screw driver, wrench etc....They wanted to know what brand they were, when I bought them and what I paid for them....Well the haggling went on for 2 years and we finally had to sue the company which cost us quite a bit but thats the only way we could settle the claim and in the end we ended up on the short end of the payout big time....My advice is to photograph everything in your house and inventory everything of value that you own because after a loss you won't be able to remember it all...keep the inventory and serial number list in a bank safety deposit box in case you ever need it....I had another case where I had my truck stolen and it had lots of tools in the back...They found the truck stripped and all the tools gone so when I filed a claim with my auto insurance I found out they won't cover anything that didn't come as original equipment with the truck, not the contents and nothing else period...Bottom line is don't believe any of the commercials on TV about what great coverage and caring agents company ABC offers because its pure bunk...Their only concern is bottom line profit pure and simple.

I have insurance through the NRA Arms Care program. Good rates and it is replacement cost not ACV. Only expensive guns over $2,500 need to be declared.

Gun Smoke gave some great advice.

Since about 1972, I have had my firearms added as a rider to my homeowners policy. It is a pain to give them serial numbers for each new purchase but it serves more than to get coverage on the guns. You will have an agent with the serial numbers and photos of each gun in the event your home goes up in smoke or destroyed by a tornado.

I would also suggest that you get a safe large enough to hold the guns. Sometimes one of the small safes sold at home repair stores will work and at a cheap price.

I have my collection insured with Collectibles Insurance Services.
They do require you to list each firearm and and the amount you want it insured for. I have never had to file a claim so I cannot say how they are to deal with when it comes to getting what you pay for.
I would have liked to used the NRA ArmsCare but it is 3.5 times the cost of of the same coverage with Collectibles Insurance.

Also, if you can afford it and have the place to put it get a real safe and avoid all the commercial "gun safe" manufacturers and buy a used jewelers safe instead. It actually may be less expensive than one of those big, beautiful "gun safes," but it will cost more to have it moved in because of it's weight and use of real steel.

A ton and a half safe should be a decent starter safe.
Get one over two tons if possible.
