I'm enamored with ugly guns...can't help it.

Something about the Savage 24's does it for me. Problem is that they're hard to figure out. The barrel attachment doesn't allow for a well regulated gun. And with the older ones, your gambling whenever you buy one ~ if it will be a good shooter or not.

Cabela's in Maine had this one. It was from 1968 and was in good condition, except the stock had been urethaned and was chipped all over the finish. I spent some time soaking and scrubbing with acetone to get that off. Then it was 600 grit sandpaper and mineral oil to get the finish evened out again. 3 coats of tru oil, and I put the stock together again onto the gun.

This one loves 158gr jacketed hollow points. Exact POA at 30 yards. Full choked on the 20ga, it holds a great pattern at 25 yards and would be dependable out to 35...

I didn't realize they ever made one chambered for .357. There surely can't be very many of them.

I have been wanting on in the 30-30/20 gauge combo...I never knew that you could get 357....I guess that I may have to find one of those too...

I love 'em. I bought a new .223 over 12 gauge about 2-3 years ago, just after Savage stopped making them (something they apparently do from time to time -- I sure hope it's not for good this time). At the time, you could use either rifle or shotgun for Fall turkey here, and we had been carrying one of each -- a real pain. Of course, no sooner do I buy the gun for that purpose than they change the regs so that both Spring and Fall are shotgun only. Nevertheless, I sometimes carry it during the turkey hunt just in case I get a chance at a coyote at longer range.

Anyway, much to my surprise, the thing has turned out to pretty much be my favorite long gun. I mounted a cheap B Square 2.5 x 20 shotgun scope on it, and the rifle will shoot sub .75 inch groups at 100 yards all day, even with cheap bulk ammo. You do have to make a little adjustment for the different line of sight for the shotgun, but "Kentucky windage" works pretty well. Model 24's are notorious for being a crapshoot when it comes to accuracy, so "your results may vary," as they say.

They have made some interesting caliber combos over the years. Mostly you'll see a lot of old .410/.22 or 20 gauge/.22 WMR, but every now and then something unusual comes up. I've never see a 20 gauge/ 30-30, but I have been looking for a good quality 12/30-30 at a good price. I passed on a well-used one on Gunbroker a few years ago marked "Mono County [CA] Animal Control" that I thought was interesting, but wasn't sure about the condition.

One thing to keep in mind. The later models, although not as interesting and more limited in caliber combo do have some advantages. First, from what I've read, the firing pin return springs on the earlier models are pretty much guaranteed to break. Also, the later models have a barrel band that is attached to the rifle with a ring that the shotgun barrel "floats" in. On the older models the barrels are both welded to a piece of metal sandwiched between them. The welds will sometimes break due to one barrel expanding contracting in relation to the other.

I once owned a stagg-built 30-30 over 20 guage. It looked exactly like this one on GB. It was a rare & unique gun. I traded a 49 ford panel truck for it. Latter sold or traded it off.

My kind of rifle - I bought the 357max/ 20ga 24V but haven't used it in a while. I was always interested in the strange and the combination guns "fit the bill"

I like the 24V's. The one in the top post is a 24V in a series D. They were mostly made in 1968, do not have the modern crossbolt safety, had some unusual calibers.... I'm still lookin for that 30-30 over a 20 gauge.

Europe has it's Drillings....and they are wonderful guns. But America has the Savage Model 24's. Anyone else notice how these guns are becoming very collectible, and the price is starting to reflect it....

My 30-30/20 ga. is the only 30-30 I own. Shoots accelerators OK to 150-175 yds. I got my 357 mag from an ex-brother in law, it has a nice walnut stock. He wanted to ream it to 357Max and paint it black. I've bought a few guns to save them from him!
