Old Projectiles

My two youngest and I went for one of our walks today. We have been blessed with some good rain lately, which always seems to bring a few of these artifacts to the surface.

This one measures about 3 ¼ inches long and ¾ at it’s widest.

Anyone else enjoy arrowhead hunting?

Have a friend that has a collection he has been working on for over 60 years. It is reported to be one of the best private collections on the east coast. He has them in an undergorund "vault" off his basement. Several of the points are valued at multiple thousands of dollars if placed on the market.

As a child, I remember placing original points on home made arrows, and losing or breaking them. My cousin broke an beautiful axe head I'd found by striking it against an iron pipe!

I have a few pick-ups from the fields around the house.

around here it's civil war projectiles (seige of petersburg) live rounds are still found on a regular basis...three years ago a guy i knew was disarming a 35lb.parrot shell in his basement museum and it went off...took off the side of his home...he is no longer with us...

Makes me glad these don't pack quite that much punch! I think I remember hearing about that explosion on the news. RIP...

Years ago, I scraped the top of an old riverbank down a bit because my barn is right beside it, and I wanted the roof drainage to drain away from the barn a bit quicker. The Army Corps of Engineers had straightened the river out many decades before (WAY before my time), so this bank is now 60-80 yards from the river.

After a few rains, I was walking by the barn, and on top of that bank I saw what kinda looked like a quartz arrowhead (not much flint around here). It was not well formed, making me wonder if it was just a rock. I started looking around, and there were many quartz chips in a small area, and in addition to a very well formed point, there were what appeared to be 3 or 4 "rejects" that were close to being points, but did not quite make the grade. I could envision a man sitting there teaching a couple of boys how to make points.

I think you found a campsite Lee. I betcha there's a lot more where the one you found came from.

My brother found thousands walking behind our father while plowing and discing. He spent his life walking the fields around the house. He also found 3 Clovis points.

My daughter has a grade-school friend whose dad is half Native American. He has an amazing collection of points. He says they come to him to be found. He claims not to look actively but they regularly fall under his gaze. He says he just scuffles along and there one is. One of his prize points is black with a diagonal black stripe. I'll bet that was someone's "medicine" point and highly valued.

There are a couple places (private property) in the Texas hill country that will rent you an area for the day. You can dig and what you find is yours from what I've heard.

Its fun watching the kids eyes light up when they find one...or think they have found one. I'd love to find an old campsite. I've never found anything overly unique or valuable that I know of, other than time spent with my kids.

My parents used to find them all the time in the fields of Central Texas when growing up.
I have always wanted to find just ONE arrowhead and put it on my neck chain.
I have looked and looked and looked and never had ANY success.

WHERE ARE YOU GUYS FINDING THESE?

I have known two people like that. You could knock them out, dump them in a dumpster, and they would find a point! Chances are slim I could find one in an Indian museum.

I am like LSK- I looked for years in what was supposed to be good areas.
The first one I found was below the edge of the roof of a childhood friend's house in the mountains. I just walked around the corner of his house , and there it lay where the rain dripped off the roof.
I lost that one in a housefire!

The only other I ever found is described above.

I suppose I'm one of the lucky ones. I've spotted them while driving a tractor, on horseback, or just walking about.

Here's todays loot....little buggers at that.
