Close Call Today: Marriage Hopefully Saved
I wandered in the NAPA about two hours ago to buy a hunting license. While Bill was printing it out, I noticed what looked like a 1911 Colt on the counter amongst a pile of boxes and handguns. There was another older gentleman with one of those heavy-duty grocery bags with a bunch of guns in it he was selling. Pretty much the same scenario as last week when I bought the NIB Nickel New Frontier. I thought to myself, "Oh, ****. You're going to get in even worse trouble."
My wife pays the bills. Sunday night, she was going over the bills. She asked, "What is all this money on the Barrow bill for?" I told her to just send them a couple of hundred dollars, and mumbled something about selling something to pay it off. Later, after she went to bed, I looked at the bill. The charge for the New Frontier wasn't even on it, just the remnants of what I owed on the P&R Model 19-3 I bought about a month ago. Oh, ****.
When I got my license, I eased over and looked at the gun. It was a Colt Combat Commander. I didn't pick it up or anything, I could just see that it looked pretty good, and had the old satin nickel finish Colt used to put on some Commanders. I walked over and casually asked Bill if they were trading for the gun. "Oh, it's ours," he said. I asked how much, and he said I would have to ask Bo, they hadn't priced it yet, and it would probably go on Gunbroker.
"It's a 9MM," he said. It's funny now, but a wave of relief actually swept over me--now I won't have to get a divorce!! I have been coveting a good Colt 1911, preferably a Series 70 or pre Series 70 Government Model, or a Commander, but I have absolutely no interest in a 9MM Commander, nor anything else.
Unless a really nice Model 39-2 were to show up.

I may be down your way this weekend. My in-laws live in Box Springs. I may drive over and take a look at the "marriage killer" just for the fun of it. I love that NAPA store!

I have a Colt Combat Commander in 9mm. It's a fun gun to shoot and used to be an inexpensive one too.
I would have had the opposite reaction than you if I ran across one in nickel.
Where was this NAPA store? :>)

That's some hardware store. "I'll take a gallon of water sealer, a new water hose, a mower blade, and a Colt Commander!"

It's 100 miles due South of Turner Field in Atlanta, give or take a few miles. Come on down!

FiShErMaN, my wife has relatives in St. Augustine. It is right at 310-315 miles, all but about thirty miles on the interstate. Five or so hours if you don't have to stop every 50 or 60 miles. Worth the trip.
For those who missed it last week, link to some pictures of the store.

i love these stories. i live in a town that is plenty big enough to have a decent gun store, but we don't have one. we have 4 and they are all ****. nice guns like that never show up. just bottom of the barrel junk, and if something kinda nice is there, then it's way way too high. as a result, i do all my business online, but it sure takes away from the experience. there isn't much of a magical or memorable experience and i absolutely hate that. you are very lucky.

A 9mm Combat Commander?!?!?! It is a good thing I don't live in GA. Wish some of the NAPA stores that sell guns here in ND where as nice as yours.

Tell him he needs to start his own NAPA/Gun & AMMO Franchise--he could set his first one up right here where I live. We have nothing and it's a fairly good sized town-----
Man are you lucky.

I find a divorce to be cheaper than buying guns. It is also more profitable. Have you checked how high the maintenence cost is for a mid range female?

True, but you're going to take a hell of a beating on the trade-in.

Sounds like he's about to take a hell of a beating anyway! Hey Mark. If you leave, make sure to take all your guns with you. Ummmm, you wouldn't happen to have a nice boat too, would ya?

Nope, no boat. I have a couple of good bird dogs, though.
