Is Oregon a Gun friendly State?
I lived in Arizona for many years and I may have a job opp in Oregon. I did have property in Drain OR many years ago and a OR CCW back in '92-"94. Has it changed since then? AZ has gotten better if that's possible. Thanks,
Mike

You've got to define what's important to you. Do you like full auto and silencers?
Regardless, anyone can answer that question for themselves. The internet is your friend! Google "Brady Handgun violence" and it takes you straight to the enemy's camp. They've done you a favor. They rate the states by how much they love them or hate them.
I live in Kentucky, and I'm disgusted at my state legislators for allowing both LA and OK to catch us at the bottom of the anti-gunners list. Meaning we're at the top of our list.
I'm too lazy to do your foot work for you.
But my impression is its not what we call "gun friendly", its just not "gun un-friendly". There's a lot of ground in the middle. People who live in places that aren't really friendly for whatever reason are happy with their status. Even Texan's, who are in the middle of the pack, think they're in heaven.

Mostly, yes. A couple of minor exceptions.

Utah is the winner with zero points, Idaho is one of six states with two. Oregon is much higher.
Western Oregon is sorta Cal north, Eastern Oregon is Idaho West. CCW is shall issue and open carry is allowed, but I think not in Portland. I live very close to the border and hike a lot and without I GPS I often don't know what state I'm in. The sheriff told me just to wear it in a holster and don't worry about it. (Malheur County)
I can tell you this, Oregon is no Arizona.

In Oregon you need to take a gun safety course taught by any approved NRA instructor, fill out an application, get 3 references, get finger printed and pay $65. Which isn't too onerous. Once you get your permit you can carry concealed just about everywhere in Oregon. I have had mine about 2 years now. The permit is good for 4 years and it depends on which county you live in as to how you renew it. Here in Lane County the sheriff sends you a renewal form and you send in your fee. I don't recall how much the renewal costs.

Switchblades are perfectly legal in Oregon. I remember buying a nice Benchmade auto at the mall in Portland. Neat state. The wife and I might retire there in a few years and build a compound.

I live here and was born and raised here, but I did spend almost 22 years away from Oregon while I was on active duty (Army).
Overall, Oregon is pretty good as a gunners state. CHL is shall issue, generally open carry is allowed (Portland allows it, but it has to be unloaded - unless you have an Oregon CHL), no other licensing or registration requirements, and full auto and suppressors are permitted (just need to meet the federal requirements). Excluding Portland, Salem, Beaverton, Hilsborough or Ashland, having a gun with you probably won't get much of a rise out of anybody. Lots of public land to go shooting or hunting on. Oh, those cities I mentioned may be unhappy with the presence of a gun, but "unhappy" is about as far as they can go with it - Oregon has a state preemption law, severely limiting what carry laws cities and counties may impose.
As mentioned, switch blades are permitted to be owned and carried (just not concealed).
The statement about needing three references for a CHL is technically not correct. State law does not require it, but some counties (such as Lane) seem to feel they need it - hasn't been challenged in court yet, so they are getting away with it. CHL's need to be processed by the Sheriff's Office withim 45 days (unless cause is shown for a delay) - Multnomah County (where Portland is) pushes the 45 day requirement - Portland would rather have discretionary issue CHL's (or I'm sure to their way of thinking, no CHL's at all).
I live in Clackamas County, next door just south of Portland.
Clackamas County is considered "the wild west" by many in Portland - our Sheriff is cool with CHL's (their office even runs a very nice indoor range open to the public and offers defensive shooting classes to the public with DPSST certified instructors). CHL renewals can be same day renewals (no waiting after application if done at this same shooting range).
If you come out this way, let me know. Maybe we can link up and I can cover more for you, maybe even show you the CCSO range I wrote about above.
Peace,

The Great Republic of Texas has 9 points somehow, but are near the bottom of the Brady List with no stars. Must be our no CHL in schools or I guess we didn't bribe those Brady folks to rank us lower.

Lane County's renewal is $50, in person for a new picture, and out the door with a new card. I just did mine a few months ago.

That list is pretty handy!
Just read it from bottom to top!
I'm very disappointed in their rankings though.
Why didn't Arizona rank at the bottom of their list?
Also, I'd like Georgia to be next to the bottom- we aren't far enough down!

I live in Coos County,OR. No problem with getting my CCW. it used to be 40 buck renewal [4 years] now it's 50 bucks. Inflation I guess. To buy a gun you have to pass the form 4077 ????, pay the man & walk out with it.

Well, we've got zero stars and a "4" rating here in Missouri, looks like we are doing just fine!
