Unhappy My JR Terrior got tore up by a German Shepard! Warning, stitches Pics!

Well my Saturday got off to a really bad start. I was all set to do some painting where the plumbers had cut through the walls to re-pipe the entire house. (they did a great job)

I let my JTR out the front like I do every morning and hear a loud high pitch yelping, wife and I go out and see my dog limping back towards us with half the skin on his rear hanging off!.

Some neighbor from a few blocks over was walking his dog and decided to take a dump on my yard (there are two empty lots across the street) Guess the Shepard was protecting his owner when my dog ran up to him. This was on my property.

I have seen the man and his wife with dog many times and always on a leash and seemed well trained. The man was very upset and concerned and agreed to pay the Vet bill. I did not call Animal Control as I did not see it happen and can not see what they would do. These folks are from Czech Republic and he was very worried about animal control, He thanked me over and over for not calling them. He said he was going to have the dog put down. I tried to convince him to call a Rescue as it is a beautiful animal.

Poor guy, looks so sad. Still wants to play ball.

Not posting the before stitches photo. Really nasty!

Over 20 staples outside and equal amount inside.

Sorry to hear about this. He's a beauty though, and I'm sure he'll be back to his old tricks in no time. Hope the little guy feels better soon!

Here's what he normally looks like. Getting older though. Needs some just for Men hair stuff.

My JRT gives my 2 pits all the **** they can handle. Sometimes it sounds like they are killing each other. When I yell at them they all 3 stop and look at me like " what did I do daddy?"
I'm thinking about starting a new sport.................

I hate to sound like an adversarial old coot, but I am a fervent dog trainer/lover, and have a pack of my own.

IMHO, I would call animal control. We had an "event" in our back yard when my youngest lab was jumped by a Golden Retriever [yeah, I know, they're all known for being gentle!!!], while my puppy was "doing his business" in our yard.

The GR owner lived two doors down, so we're talking nearby. Our puppy got ripped up pretty good. The owner of the offending dog begged us not to call animal control, too. I felt I had to...only to find that this was the third attack by this GR in one year, and the GR had actually come close to killing another GR, out for a walk on a lead, and only 9 weeks old! [It is not normal for a dog to go after a non-threatening puppy, of the same breed.]

Each event, the owner promised to put the GR into a rescue program.

The GR was impounded to make sure it would happen after our attack.

The real bummer in the whole deal is that my lab was never the same since that point, and although I've got him trained to rock-solid [all three official] levels of obedience competition, he still has issues with other dogs, requiring maximum attention on my part.

I realize you want to be a good guy, and I sincerely applaud that, but I can only suggest to start a paper trail at least. You may actually be dealing with a Czech schutzhund, who may not be in the hands of an experienced schutzhund handler. No knock at all on schutzhunds...my trainer/educator handles them, and I'd trust any of his dogs with a baby holding a steak! They and the trainer are absolutely reliable.

I may be over-reacting, but based on the injury to your dog....I don't think I am.

Glad to hear your dog is OK, poor little feller. We have a pure German Shepard and I am always cautious with him around other dogs especially small ones the bigger ones I don't mind as they will normally work it out between themselves. They are really a owners dog and very protective and I am sure the owners feel terrible I know I would. I am sure your Terrior will be spoiled to the max and best wishes to him.

He may be worried because more and more areas are enacting vicious dog laws, and German Shepards are getting on their lists.

He may have had other incidents or he may be avoiding a large insurance bill. Of course you are the one that has to live next to him so it's a call only you can make.

I really empathize with you and your JRT. Two years ago, two dogs came into my yard and attacked my 4-1/2 pound cat, breaking her left rear leg in seven places, and almost killing her. Thanks to the veterinary hospital at Virginia Tech and a cat orthopedic specialist in Richmond, her leg and life were saved. The dog's owner had to be taken to court but ended up paying more than $3,000 in vet bills, and the dogs had to be removed (not euthanized) from the neighborhood, and permanently fenced. Here she is in recovery, lounging in her favorite sunny spot.

I'll spare you the photos I took at the time of the injury, but looking at yours, all of this came back into memory. Good luck on your dog's swift and complete recovery.

We have a long hair Jack, one morning a large mutt charged at the wife and Eddie layed down like he was scared. Wife said when the dog got right in front of Eddie he jumped and got the dog by the throat and was hanging on for dear life. He sent the dog packing, a Jack thinks they are the size of a horse. Hope your little buddy gets well fast, they are sweethearts. Here is a picture of our JRT - EDDIE:

Default Big Dog Little Dog

I am glad the hind end was injured. When the big dog grabs the little dog by the middle, there can be a:
1. Spinal fracture and spinal cord injury
2. Bilateral perforations of the chest resulting in lung damage and air in the chest cavity
3. Multiple rib fractures and instability of the chest wall... Flail chest.
All are life threatening immediately and "touch and go" as to treatment.

So we are still back to the problem of who is at fault and it comes back to the pet owner who is irresponsible. He who lets his animal run free and can not control it is at fault.
Also the pet owner who lets his dog soil your property deserves to be penalized for his/her pet's actions.
Find a "pit bull" lawyer and get your medical expenses back and his legal fees as well!

By your screen name are you a Dr ? (Vet)?

The main concern our Vet had was the layer of skin (hair layer) reattaching due to possible lack of blood flow. As these dogs are so muscular when he got bit, the skin layer being so tight, just split and laid right over. Kinda looked like a full face lift operation. So we will have to see if there is enough flow to allow the skin to reattach. I was suprised by the lack of bleeding and only a small part of the wound had fat coming out.
The owner of the dog has agreed to pay any bills. At this time I am OK but if complications occur, I will have to seek out other options.

He has been resting/sleeping all day and does not appear to be in much pain (giving him a small dose of pain pills and antibiotics)

Thanks for everyone's replies.

Good luck on the "little guy's" recovery. We adopted a JRT from our local APL and he's a handful. We take him to dog socalization classes and he tends to play hard with bigger dogs. He is a high energy dog that overstays his wecome with some bigger dogs. After reading up on JRT's after we got him, I guess it's there nature.

Good Luck...

I really feel for you and have a lot of sympathy for you, and please don't take this wrong, but one of my big pet peeves is exactly what you did; let your dog out the front door "like I do every morning". I can't tell you how many of these tiny little dogs are treated like this and how many come running at me when I'm out jogging trying to nip me. And every time I actually see their owner, all I hear is how their little sweetheart never does this.. yeah. right. Hands down, the little cute ones are the worst when their owners aren't there and I'm jogging past.

Please, never let your dog run the neighborhood free. If you really love him, stop doing this. Once he goes out that door unattended, you have no idea if he is either going after people or being attacked. Either way, it wouldn't have happened if you had walked him on a leash, put him out in a fenced yard, or even put him on a chain (not the best idea, but way better than running free).

Again, I really don't want to upset you by saying this, and hope you understand, I have the best intentions for your dog. I NEVER let my dogs run free intentionally.

As far as the other dog/owner, no way to know exactly what happened, perhaps he really was responsible and couldn't stop it in time, or perhaps he was irresponsible and did something reckless. No way to know. I guess he paid the bills, that says something about him?

Sorry to see and hear about this. As a dog lover I just hate to have this kind of thing happen but the other side of this situation is no fun either. I have a large dog that I walk on a leash and she has been attacked by smaller, loose dogs. When it happens, my dog's instincts to defend itself kick in and the other dog is suddenly not in a happy place. I feel bad when this happens but there's really nothing I can do about it as I can't control the other dog.

Poor little fella! I hope he's feeling better soon.

I would call animal control too. A well-behaved normal GSD doesn't attack other dogs because he is under the control of his owner. This was a pretty vicious attack - it wasn't a warning nip. A dog will escalate any behavior he feels is proper and he is allowed to get away with. What if this was a child the dog suddenly took a dislike to?

And if the owner doesn't pay the vet bills out of spite, retribution, or a feeling he had "made a deal", take him to small claims court.

We have a underground Invisible fence. My dog was on my property and never leaves my property front or back yard. He does not go into the street. He does not run freely around the neighborhood he stays in the confines of my yard. The GS dog was up on My property at least 10 feet.

Please call animal control. Yours is not the first dog or person this GSD has attacked, I am willing to bet.

I'm glad to hear that, but it still leaves the poor guy to fend for himself if something like this happens. We sometimes have dogs wander down our road and into our yard. Our dogs are protected by the backyard fence I put up for them. Every now and then I hear a lot of barking and go out to shoo the other dog out of my yard. Those electric fences only help to keep your own dog in, not others out.

In this case, the other owner clearly shouldn't have allowed his dog that far into your yard. I keep mine (when out on walks) out of other yards.

Te really dumb thing about all this is that as I mentioned there are two empty building lots(fields) across the street. Many people walk their dogs and let them go there. I have also seen this GS dog and owner go by many times and the GS just ignores my dog.
The owner sometimes rides his bike with the dog on leash and he just trots along.

Had my dog been out in the yard already, I do not think this would have happened. The timing was just wrong.

Unhappy No good deed goes unpunished............

Wow......, sorry to see the little guy in that condition. I hope he gets better soon. I don't want to sound like a jerk, but there is a saying that has more meaning every day...especially these days. Here it is again from the title.....No good deed goes unpunished!!! I would call Animal control and make sure this doesn't happen again to YOU, or someone else's dog. I had my 6 month old black lab attacked by the insolent neighbors shepherd and he thought it was funny. Thank goodness Hoss only had a 1 inch long tear in his side. As the neighbor was laughing, I walked over and "educated" his dog in front of him. He wasn't man-enough to stick up for his dog or himself. Darned if he didn't move somewhere else where no doubt, people ARE afraid of a bully. Sorry I had to go after the dog before it's owner who was at fault, but my lab was attacked in my yard by @45'. I can't deal with that type of adolescent behavior when it involves me or mine..........from an animal or neighbor. Sorry 'bout the rant and again,,,,I hope your JRT heals up soon...........Sprefix

Thanks to my absurd and very limited reading skills, I missed that the dogs were on your property in the OP. My earlier post was refering to my dog, on a leash, being attacked in the street by a loose dog. Being on your property changes everything, including who's responsible and who gets to pay.

Sorry about that...Bob
