bitstream: Thanks for advice. My current approach won't be long term. I hope to loose another ten, so I feel a little better about myself. Once that's accomplished I can go to smaller portions X more meals. A freind of mine weighed 325 this time last year. He has gone the manged meal route. He picks up meals at their location twice weekly. 3 meals a day. $705 a month. He's a bachelor, no other food in the house. He's lost about maybe 40 lbs. He's always hungry.

Jim: Excellent job!! It's so easy to put it on. So very hard to get it off. It seems the older you get, the harder it is to loose weight. So the earlier you start the better.

This has turned out to be quite the support group! See what you did here Evil One!

Congrats to all for taking better care of yourselves. bitstream is correct with the "eat throughout the day" thing. I have been getting very good results with eating 3 times a day . Breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Fruit, or other healthy snacks through out the day are helpful in keeping you from overdoing it at suppertime.

At 6'2" and 278, the doctor said the the weight had to go! I am now at 252, and plan on getting down to 225-230 within the next 3 months.

For those with knee and ankle problems, may I suggest swimming, and walking in a pool. Walking in water that is belt to chest high takes a whole lot of weight off your legs, and provides plenty of aerobic exercise. I know it is tough to find a pool for many folks, but a lot of gyms have them.

Here's hoping that everyone meets their individual goals!

Good Luck! The best part is, this isn't some fad/book diet, it's just eating natural and healthy. Those popular diets always seemed dangerous or odd. What could possibly be saner than just eating small, healthy portions throughout the day?

Good advice on the pool. I've also found that the stationary bicycle is very good on knees. When My knee blew a couple of years ago, the bicycle is what finally got it back in shape. My physical therapist approved (he also gave me a bunch of other low impact exercises to strengthen the knee).

Congadulations! I been fat all my life. I am comeing up on 70. My early life was in a country general store. Maybe I got my start raiding the cookie cases and pop cooler. I never have been anything approaching so called normal even in primer school. I remember once my dad getting on me for drinking too much water as he thought it was makeing me fat!
Speaking of dad, while active he never worked out a day in his life and ate anything he wanted, yet at 6ft 5"s and 220 #s, had a perfect athletic build without trying! All my early years I had bull work that not many experiance these days. I did go from that to a easy guard job for my career. I done my damage in my early years as now I eat about a thrid of what I did when young.
I still say genetics is the biggest factor. I have seen sets of identical twins that have fought their weight on and off and sepperatly and still both end up looking identical.
Being fat definetly affected my life from the standpoint of jobs etc. I must have been turned down by the service about 4 times and another 4 or 5 leo jobs. Maybe saved my life?
I tried many diets and temporary gyms. The only thing that did temporarly work was versions of the atkins diet. Maybe 2 or 3 times years ago I lost almost a 100 pounds, however I would almost pass out if I stood up and I went maybe 3 weeks without going to the bathroom!
Everyone told me to get off it! I once had a doctor put me on thyroid pills. He told me I needed to stay on them for life. I lost huge and never felt better! He died. I have went to many doctors since than and asked to be tested. Every time they tested me and told me I am in the low range of normal and not bad enough to take the pills. I dont drink alchoel, dont drink shurgared pop or eat real heavy. If my wife and I might eat out many times we will SHARE a breakfast. We are built similar, she is about 5ft 10 and I am now 6ft and 3 spins! (I was 6ft 2"s in high school and army physicals but shrunk.) The entire world has somehow got bigger. I have read the average japanese is about 6"s taller than before the war. When I was a kid it seemed my dad was the biggest man in the country at 6ft 5"s. Now that wouldnt warrant a secound look! Anyway I look like hell, but feel okay. I have a wife that loves me. I have worked and went to school with countless guys that at my same age were a lot skinnier than me and have been dead a long time! I dont belive everything that "experts" tell me.

I'm always impressed when someone makes such a lifestyle change.

You've done very well.

I have some physical limitations that preclude about every kind of exercise except lifting my trap gun up 300 or so times per day. Thankfully, I can still do that. And, sometimes I even hit that little orangy thing they throw from the traphouse. You know they taste just like chicken if you cook them long enough!

Still, I've dropped 54 lbs. since mid-March and hope to lose another 30 or so. I really would like to see a 32" waist again (on me, that is) and still be healthy enough to shoot. I look pretty good (maybe you'd disagree, but don't say it) with the 38" waist, but I've been here before and know that, if I stop now, I'll go back up. I have given away every piece of clothing as it got too big for me, so it would cost me a bundle to go up again.

I've lost 1000 pounds in my life and gained 1100 back. I KNOW that diets don't work. It takes a change of lifestyle to keep it off.

In my 20s and 30s, I was a runner, 4.2 miles every day and over 6 on the weekends. Unfortunately, this muscle disease, in the MD family, ended that. 32" became 34, then 36, then, finally, 42. 10 inches in added girth can't be good and I ended up in Atrial Fib and with diabetes requiring insulin.

The Atrial Fib is a bit disconcerting when one first discovers it, but, after a few months I don't notice it and the docs say that it, alone, makes me no less likely to have a heart attack than if I was in Sinus Rhythm.

On another Forum, some of the posters decided to do a "group" diet. I didn't participate at first, then got into it. Hearing of others success and about them falling off the wagon and getting back on was helpful to me.

Congratulations again on your changes.

Bob

You are right... dang what a support group.
I have always watched the interactions here like a big scattered out family, and it has always made me smile.
I have fluctuated up and down between 300 and 340 for years... never really trying to lose, but trying not to gain too much.
A few times I did try, sometimes a bit went away... but it always came back.
Looking at it as "this is how I live now" made all the difference in the world.
I'm heading to the store to see if I can finally make my knees feel better, thanks bitstream for the advice.

Picked up the Glucosamine Chondroitin, dang at the horse pills
Started them tonight... looking forward to less creaking from the knees.
I'm not one to look at myself, most pics are taken and I happen to be there... but I was walking into my motel room tonight and just stopped and looked.
I see me every day and dont notice a lot.

I honestly looked, I want to thank all of you for the kind words.
I used to do my best to not really look.
I have improved more than I had thought.
I am not a thin guy, really dont want to be.
But I can be a happy and content big guy.
Not big and round, but just a "big guy".
If I dont lose another pound or inch, I will still be the happiest I have been with myself in decades.
If I do keep losing, which I should, I will look at each new day as an extension of my happiness.
You people are amazing, thank you from the bottom of my heart.
I never thought I would see this again.

My personal experience has been that it's not so much what you take in as what you burn off. The advantage to a better diet is that in the long run it's more efficient, you get more energy for your food dollar.

Great results. I started losing weight after diagnosed as type II as well. Went from 190 to 150 or so. Unlike you I am short(5'6"). I once weighed over 200. Folks told me I looked like a teddy bear.

Evil One, good for you. Congratulations. Keep up the good work.

I too went on the health wagon, after having to have two stents put in on June 1st of this year. I started losing weight in the hospital as they placed me on a cardiac diet, and I eliminated a bunch of things from my diet when I got home. No more salt, no coffee creamer, no more beer or Crown Royal, and lots of low fat food, vegetables, and fruit, plus drinking lots of water every day.

I went through a cardiac rehab program for 10 weeks, and went from 313 pounds to 260 pounds. After the rehab program, I joined the hospital fitness center and use the treadmill and bike, and they also put me on a program using different weight machines. I am going to try and get down to 225 or 230, but for my size (6' 4"), that may be too much weight loss. I have not felt or looked this good in years.

I am wearing clothes that I had stored away as they would not fit me, and even those are big on me now. I was even able to get into my police shirt and cruiser jacket which I was wearing when I retired in 1997. Now that really made me feel good. I was ready to call the Chief and ask to come back to work. Well, not really, but you get my point.

Another thing, I am not diabetic, but I do have Atrial Fibrillation, but it does not seem to bother me. I wear a heart monitor when I work out so I know what my heart rate is and I can adjust my tempo on the workout to keep it in my "safe" range. I am 66 years old, going on 67 too.

Congrats, a very big congrats.
So many make the attempt and so few get there. You are doing it.

So far this year I'm down a little over 65 pounds. Looking to lose about another 20.
This is a pic from a couple weeks ago. Not bad for having a major foot reconstruction on June 1. (yes the surgeon gave his blessings for the workout)

Great! Don't expect instant results, just keep taking them per the instructions daily and you'll start to see the results in maybe a week or so, but definitely by next month you should really begin noticing. My knees went from snap crackle pop and unable to get down on the floor to basically smooth and painless (plus I can kneel down on the floor without a hitch). My wife takes them for a few days anytime she tweaks her back and they fix her right up.

Bravo, sir. Thank you for your post. One of the reasons why I love this site is that in the middle of all of the posts about holsters, recent revolver purchases, internal locks, and reloading, we get posts like yours (and all of the posts in response) that remind us of the other important things in life.

I landed on my heaviest weight two months ago, when I discovered that the cargo shorts I bought last year "because they are so loose I'll always be able to fit into them" were becoming too tight. Funny how it's our clothing, and not the scales, that wake us up. Over the last few years I had crept up several waist sizes, far past the point I had always sworn I would never reach.

So, it was South Beach Diet and 4 miles of walking every day and pouring the Belgian beer into the sink (I'm a sucker for well-made Belgian beer, but the damned stuff has so many calories) and I'm more than half-way through the 20 pounds I need to lose. I'm 47 this year, but I was still able to run two miles at 8:30 per mile tonight, and hope to fit into all of those 32-inch khakis in the corner of my closet before Thanksgiving. It's amazing what the body can do when you feed it right.

Everyone is saying pretty much the same thing, and they are all correct. It's just a matter of watching the portion sizes and the carbohydrates, and keeping up with the exercising and drinking water. And it will happen.

I saw tonight what I am up against. I get up at 0530 and start my day with a glass of low sodium V8 and then off to work. By lunch time I am pretty hungry. Today I had a ham and cheese on honey wheat a bag of chips and a diet soda. I get off work at 4:30 and run some erands before I get home and by then it's 5:30. My wife is disabled so it's up to me to cook dinner. By then I am ready to eat the refrigirator. While I was cooking dinner tonight I ate a brownie and a yogart and then over ate at dinner. By the time dinner is over it's around 7:00 and then I sit at my computer or if front of the TV until bedtime. This is pretty much 6 days a week. On Sunday all I have energy to do is laundry and some housework.

How do I get out of the rut and start doing something for my health? I can probably squeeze in a 20 minute walk at work. They pretty much encourage us to get out of the office a couple of times a day. I feel guilty doing that though. Maybe some healty snacks during the daqy would help with the extream hunger.

Jimmy, 629-6 2.5" fixed sight with boot grips.

Alde, bumping up activity is a key part. If they let you take breaks a brisk walk is great to squeeze in.
When I get breaks it is usually to wring the sweat out of my shirt
Keep a water bottle on hand, nuts and yogurt are a handy snack.
At home, the best way to not eat junk is to not have it around.
When at home I have been cooking healthy, and saving the leftovers.
I get hungry between meals, I reheat the stuff I fixed previously that was a good healthy meal.
I also keep a candybar in the fridge. I get a "I need something sweet" craving... I take a bite of it and put it back. I learned that from my wife.
Also, brushing your teeth is a good way to get past the sweet craving.

Everyone learns their own ways of dealing with cravings, what works for others may not work for you... but they are good starting points and MAY work.
Good luck.

You can try adding a snack of fruit/nuts/??? in mid-morning and mid-afternoon. That keeps you from being so hungry you overeat dinner.

But, here's another idea. I finally decided after 17 years of marriage to put my health a little higher on my list. I also cook dinner after I get home, but on my running nights, I cook the dinner for her and the kids, then as soon as the last item is ready, I change into my running clothes and go for a 5.3km run in the steep hills around my house, leaving her to feed the kids and herself and put the dishes in the sink. When I get back, I cool down, drink water, take a shower, change, and THEN I eat my dinner. By then, I don't over eat AND I get my workout in. I miss some TV time with the family, but like I said, I finally decided that my health was more important than the extra hour (30 min run + 30 min shower/change) of contact time with the family nightly. I'll make that up by living longer for them.

After reading most of the posts in this thread, I think the most important tip that has been given is to put yourself first. The only one who can take responsibility for you is you. My Dad died at 54 & my brother at 44, both from heart disease. With the help of my wife, who does the cooking, I have been able to get back to 203 from my high of 236. Since I no longer work full time, I go to the gym on the days I don't work & also walk a lot. So far I have reached 68 yrs. & feeling better every day. My wife tells me you can't do it by talking about it, you just gotta do it.

HEY!! Wait a minute!
You mean my clothes didn't shrink by just hanging in the closet??
Are you suggesting that the late night ice cream, cake, pie, and cookies made my clothes shrink?
I thought I was just shrinking in height.
According to the weight chart I should be 7.5 feet in height.

As you might guess from my handle, I am both big and old. Six feet, and topped out at 378. In January, my doctor told me I had mild Type II diabetes, and put me on metformin, at the lowest possible dosage. I was told to modify my eating habits, but felt OK so I didn't bother.

We were on a three week trip out west, and during the trip I developed blurred vision, terrific thirst, and loss of appetite. When we got home, last week, I was really on the ropes. Went to the doc on Monday, had the blood work done, and yesterday got the results. Drasticly increased medication, twice daily blood check, and 1600 calories a day, spread out. It's time to save my life! 336 pounds this morning, and I am rummaging around looking for some old pants to wear!

This is a great thread, and it came just at the right time for me. I may have to change my handle to just olddave; that's better than deaddave!

It looks like Evil One has accidentally formed a support group. We're here for you.

#1: This is not the time for a diet or an exercise program. This is a complete lifestyle change. If you view it as something you're going to do until you're feeling better, then you'll just be back later. I dove in and haven't looked back. The wife has a chocolate cream pie in the fridge right now that has sat there for 3 days as she has eaten a piece at a time. I've not even tasted it. Before I started this, I'd have eaten half the pie at least in one day. You can do it, but you have to decide you want to and then just do it.

Keep us up to date!!!!

Well, this post and a video I saw on break.com called "Inspiration" helped me get off my duff and start doing SOMETHING.... ANYTHING. Medical discharge from the National Guards that took away my Fed job but at least gave me disability retirement, I still worked up till a year and a half ago when the economy tanked, my job went with it. Evidently no positions out there for a 51 year old that has limitations on lifting, hearing, standing or sitting for long periods of time, so unemployment is out and sitting in front of the computer seems to be the thing to do. Weight is up, along with depression, back hurts worse.... so over last weekend, I decided that sitting around pissing and moaning isn't helping, so after I take one kid to work, I come home and take each of the dogs for a walk. Can't take them both at the same time, one is 14 years old and is only good for down the block and back, the other is about 4 and would go all day if I let her!

Then a light breakfast and cup of hot tea. Take the other kid to her college classes, then back home to do whatever project I picked out for the day, maybe cleaning the back yard, working on the current engine swap car in the drive, or in the shop.

Fruit for lunch, and the ONE Dr. Pepper I allow myself a day, instead of the usual near-2 liter consumption I was at. Read one chapter in whatever book I am reading, then on the computer for two hours till time to pick up the kids. Make dinner for the working wife and family, watch some tv then me and the Missus take our short evening walk, then early to bed.

Its only been a few days, and while I am not measuring by pounds as of yet, I do know that I am feeling and sleeping better.

As to the Glucosamin, I know the medical community doesnt find any proof that they work, but I have been taking them for years, I get the ones at walmart that have the joint lubricant in them as well as a couple of other things for my arthritis and joints, and I can vouch that if it wasn't for that stuff I would be sucking down the prescriptions for the pain and sitting around like a zombie, so stick with it, it can take a bit for the benefits to show!

Dave, glad to hear you are getting lined back out.
Luckily it seems like you will be able to get yourself straightened out as back to normal as can be... whatever "normal" is.
I am on the lower dosage of metformin also, I am currently testing in the normal range... and am tempted to hop off of it for a few days and see what my natural state tests at.

Bitstream, looks like a lot of bigger people who have decided... or are deciding... to take their lives back. Puts a smile on my face.

Writer, strap the older dog to the pups back... turn it loose... then chase it down.

Excellent. Just remember, it's a long road. Don't get discouraged if some weeks aren't as good. Just keep it up and you'll be great!

Weight check for this week... 260.
I ate more than normal and wasn't able to make my own food.
Its still a loss and I will take it..
Blood glucose was also on the lower side of normal this morning.
I'm marking this down as a good week.

I slipped up a bit this past week. I have had a cold (sore throat, congestion, stuffed up head) for the past eight days, and went out to eat at a restaurant Thursday night and again Friday night. So, no real exercise, and eating more than I had become used to eating caused the weight loss to come to a screaching halt. I have been controlling the sugar levels by diet and exercise alone, and they are remaining (thankfully!) in the normal range.

I didn't eat pastry or sugar drinks like soda all week, but did eat a small amount of bread with a few meals, and had a few potatoes. Also, I didn't drink as much water this week as I did in the four weeks prior. Well, today is "get back on the trail" day. I didn't work this hard to start slipping back! I still need to shed another 30 pounds in the next 80 days. That is when I go back to see the doc.

I am on my way out to do a brisk 3-4 mile walk! Y'all keep on keepin' on. Lots of good people here. I wish you all continued success.

Kudos to you; I have great appreciation for those who do what it takes to lose weight. At the first of this year, having let myself go, I weighed around 250#. As in the past, I get disgusted and start watching calories and portions and am now 229# at 6'3". One thing is for sure, the older I get, the tougher it is to lose weight. I'll soon be 57 and do not want to have high blood pressure, diabetes, etc. Quality of life is a very precious thing to me. Cheers

One of the big topics my dietician lectured on in her class was "rebound". Many people (myself included in earlier times) start a diet, get into it, and then stumble because of something like this and then, just fall off because they are off the diet and never find their way back. It's critical to not let this get you down and to just get right back on and shake it off. I lost 20lbs over the summer, but I had a number of tiny setbacks. I just shook them off and concentrated on getting back on right away. Good luck and keep going! You're doing great!

Thanks for the words of encouragement bitstream. I just got back from my walk. I was able to do the 4 miles that I set out to do in just under an hour. About 14 minutes per mile with some hills. Now it's just a matter of keeping up with it by doing it regularly.

I have never been fat, I do know Fit is a LOT more Fun.
Regarding walking, I have found the following make walking a lot more enjoyable:
1. Proper fitting footwear-doesn't have to be a $200 pair of hiking boots,
a well broken in pair of workboot or shoes work just as well. I use various combinations of insoles to make mine as comfortable as possible.
2. A cane or staff. To mee they feel good in the hand and they provide a bit of companion and diversion and on rougher terrain they come in handy.
3. A pedometer-fun to keep track of those miles.
4. A portable radio (how quaint) or an Ipad or whatever. Provides a little diversion.
5. I use a backpack, an adjustable weight belt helps burn off a few more calories, as you get used to it you can add weight to build strength and burn off calories.

Just reporting in; finally about over the virus I've had for the last month. I couldn't keep up my running as it was in my upper respitory. But, I'm back now. Ran Tuesday and was fatigued with a few wheezes. Ran this morning with no problems, lungs felt huge, knees fine, and lots of energy.

Also got interrupted a bunch with having to eat out the last couple of weeks; I tried "better" choices, but am back to my fruits/nuts/turkey on wheat this week and last. I actually not only wore an old pair of 34 jeans the other day, but carried IWB with them on! It was snug with the SWVE40 in there, but it fit and I was fine for the whole day.

No diet will work if you feel hungry all the time. Popcorn is a great low fat, high fiber snack. You don't need butter, you can find several low fat buttery spreads that taste great, or just spice it up with some other flavor. I like spicy almonds, too. Evil One is so right about portion control. A little junk food, ain't going to hurt you. A super-sized triple whopper value meal with bacon and cheese will. Sugar free drinks will certainly help. I can't believe how sweet a lot a people want their iced tea, it's crazy. I think most of our problems with weight in our country are directly caused from inactivity.

Went to my opthamalogist today, to check out the blurred vision thing. Found out that cataracts in both eyes had gotten to be a problem. He was ready to set me up for the first operation in two weeks, subject to my regular doctor's approval. Nope, have to wait at least three months to make sure sugar problems are under control. Eye guy can fit me up with specs to give 20/40 in right eya, and 20/50 in left, which may get me through vision test for driver's license renewal. Expiration is 10/21, and I would like to get renewal so I don't have to start over after surgery. I wouldn't keep driving, but I sure would like to keep the DL.

Talk about incentive to follow the diabetes guidlines!

That's the spirit! It's ok to falter, just don't give up. Rebound. You don't have to crash to "make up for it", just go back to eating right and your exercise.

I think small weight variations are to be expected and not worth worrying about. I remember 20 or so years ago I was lifting regularly. In one two month or so period I gained 4 pounds-and took an inch off my waist.

Evil One,

Good for you and good common sense. Rarely does anyone stick to a "diet". Whereas a sensible diet with an intake fo less food is the ticket. As we age we need a lot less food than we think.

I too am working on my weight, and as ordered by my doctor. It's tough, we have too much food and too many kinds now days and too much time to eat it all.

Stay the course.

I lost 35 pounds in the last year and that was not enough, they want me to lose another 30-35 pounds with lots of restrictions. Celery with peanut butter has become a delicacy, even an apple taste like candy used to. Of course the wife gets to have soft drinks and (gasp) french fries every day.Where did I put that Crystal Light?

Got a call from my Dr today, went last friday.
My diabetes is testing normal, my blood pressure... which has been high since my teens... is testing normal, my weight loss is outstanding, and my bloodwork shows that my cholesterol and triglycerides are right where they should be, my good cholesterol could be a touch higher.
So, in the last 4 months I went from the fast track to an early death to possibly living long enough to be a nuisance to my kids.

Blood sugar still higher than normal, but down considerably. Was at 326 on the scale this morning. the new glasses from the opthamologist got me past the DL eye test, but last Thursday, my vision seemed blurrier. Friday morning, I got out my old prescription. What an improvement! I can see better than I have for two months. On Monday I go to see the doctor again for a checkup.

Evil One,

Great job..

I was in the same boat, but a few years older than you (about 10) and been up and down in my weight since after a bad car accident 20 years ago.

I'm 6ft even.

Been up to 325 about 4 times, and down to 265 as many and yo-yo-ing inbetween till May of 09.

Got back down to 265 again last Feb 09 and back up to 295 by May and going up.

Again, diets got me down, but couldn't learn how to eat right and make better choices for the long haul.

My wife dragged me to WW, and boy did I learn. I thought I'd be happy getting down to 250 and keeping it off,AND would of called it a "success" if I got down to 250.
But I got down to 250 in 6months and thought I could keep going.

Got down to 210 and I had to refocus , thought it was getting tough, but made it down to 190 in a total of 12 months to the week.

And its been since May 2010 that I've kept it off.
I bounce around by about 2 lbs.. but so far soo good.

I travel a lot and the WW (weight watchers) program really helps and works (with real life food) and again, as they tell ya, it's not a diet but a way of life and helps you learn what's bad and how bad and how to make better choices.

My blood work was still good when I started, but was afraid to wake up one day and it would be off the charts...

Soo many other people in the program atest to how much better their blood work came back after being on the program for just 1-2 months.

It takes about 3-4 months for most to relearn and break bad and learn new habits.

I thought WW was a woman's things... and kept fighting my wife in going.. but it was worth every penny and every minute at the meetings.

While my injuries aren't gone, the pain from them are soo much better with about 135lbs off of my bones.... and other "things" ,,, it's like I rolled the clock back 20 years....

Got tons more energy, bounce back quicker.
If I had kept the weight on (and gained more - which would have happened that summer with the way work was going and using food for comfort), with how bad I was feeling nearing my 50's, I was afraid how bad I'd be going into my 60's.
