Default Any Enfield (SMLE) experts here......bolt removal

A friend of mine came by this afternoon with a SMLE, he was having trouble getting the bolt out. I'm not real familiar with the Enfields, but thought I knew how to get a bolt out, but it wouldn't come out. I opened up one of my firearms disassembly books to double check, yep, pull the bolt to the rear and rotate the bolt head up and remove the bolt from the receiver, however, the bolt head will not rotate up. The action closes just as easy as can be and the bolt head rotates just fine then, it just won't rotate when you try to remove the bolt.

Obviously I'm not doing something, not holding my mouth right, or something. Anyone ever experience this problem? Any hints and/or tips on how to rotate the bolt head?

Thanks much for any help and/or advice!!!

with the bolt all the way to the rear, the bolt head should pivot 45 degrees from horizontal to vertical, it takes a bit of a tug to do it...but that is how it is done

Is this an SMLE as in No.1 MkIII or a later No.4? If it is a No.1, they can sometimes take quite a tug to get it to rotate, especially if there is any old grease or cosmoline in that area. If it is a No.4, there is a difference between the Mk1 and Mk1* variants.

That is exactly what I am doing, I've even tried putting a small screwdriver against the bottom of the lug and lightly tapping, but it will not move the slightest bit.

The rifle in question is a 1943 dated Long Branch No. 4 MK I*

If you look at the rail that supports the bolthead, you will see a small cutout about 1/4 inch back from where the bolthead sits when the bolt is closed. Pull the bolt back until the bolthead lines up with that slot, then rotate the bolthead up to the vertical. You can now pull the bolt out of the gun.
