Congrats on the new addition to the family! That is one big boy! I have heard of 13 and 14 pounders being born here, but it is definately a rarity. Big or small, just be glad he is healthy!

My first born [turned 31 Sunday] was 13 pounds 8 ounces, he was17 or 18 days later than estimated. His first born was 5 pounds 13 ounces and was 30/35 days earlier than estimated. His second was 8ish pounds and arrived as estimated. My daughter is with triplets, they will be removed a min. of 6 weeks early to keep them from running into each other, and they are on track to 4 pounds or bigger-each, that's 12 pounds or more of boys plus 3 sets of plumbing. My family is very Blessed!! Me? I'm told I was good sized, on time, and came out right hand first.[I'm still like that.]

I was 12 lbs 13 oz at birth. My poor mother was a small woman of 5 ft, God bless her.

I had a nephew that was in the 13 range, as I recall. He's one big guy now, too.
Erma Bombeck was once a guest on a talk show with several men. They asked her to describe what childbirth was like. She instructed them to grasp both ends of their upper lip with their thumbs and index fingers.
Each of them complied.
"Now pull it back over your head," she said.

...and I thought these huge babies were something new. I am still concerned that natural childbirth will (has?) become something in the past. If any of the SHTF scenarios so loved by doom-mongers comes to pass, the naked ape numbers on this rock could end up very curtailed due to lack of replacements.

All 4 of ours were born at home. we had Midwives at the first one, I didn't for the first string, the trainies were great. We only had my mother-in-law [mother of 3] and a family friend [Mother of 6] at the second, and the frinds couldn't arrive in time on the other 2.

When I had my first, she was 9-4 and 20" and right on time. I was in great shape back then working on a horse farm and from first "ouch - I think I ate something bad" to delivery took 2 hours.
7 years later with the 2nd one I tested positive for gestational diabetes and had to watch every bite I ate - no sugars, few starches, etc. - and check my blood a couple of times a day. He was 2 weeks early and still was 9-4 and 22". Delivery again was in 2 hours from "hey - I think I peed my pants from that baby sitting on my bladder" but I had to work a bit harder this time.
The mother's diet has a lot to do with how big the babies are. With gestational diabetes, the baby uses the sugar as a growth hormone. Early testing nowadays helps keep the size of the babies somewhat under control. Babies also gain a pound a week in the last month so the longer they linger, the bigger they get.
