defensive baby sitting?
It seems that I never cease to amaze and entertain my wife. She is a manager of a Wal-Mart store and they change her hours around, usually at the worst of times. She is working from 8PM to 8AM at the present time. My son who has two girls, one 7 and one 17 months, is working second shift, 4:30 to 3:00, and my daughter in law works as a medical technician from 10:30 PM to 7AM. That means that I have the privilege of hanging out with my grand daughters from 10 to 3:30 when my son gets home.
They live in an apartment complex that is subsidized by the government and it attracts some real dandies. Have you ever seen a podunk gangbanger? You ain't missing nothing.
Any way when I go there to baby sit I do no go unarmed. My wife was laughing at me because I have what I call a baby sitting kit that I take. It is a laptop case containing a .357, a first aid kit, a box of .357 ammo, a weather radio and a snake bite kit. I don't know if it is legal to have a weapon there, but I would not have anything happen to them girls on my watch. There have been shooting situations there in the past. A city cop is the manager there but to get his attention a person had to literally spray him with pepper spray.
I had to explain to my wife that I am not paranoid, but I am not naive either.
Oh well, I love to keep her guessing anyway. Sometimes I think she thinks I've gone off the deep end for sure.
Peace,
gordon

Better to have it & not need it than to need it & not have it. My 2 cents worth anyway.

Better to have your baby-sitting kit, and not need it, than need it, and not have it ! A laptop case does make for a very low-profile carry, and they even have all those nice "accessory" pockets.

Funny, but I won't take my grandmonsters anywhere unless I'm armed. I'm too old and feeble to choke someone to death with my bare hands anymore.

Excellent idea to protect the little ones. I'm too fat to fight and too old to run, so Mother Nature has limited my options for flight or fight when threatened. The idea of a laptop case for your kit is right on the money.

Okay, I shall be the one to inquire...
Why is the gun not on your person? Particularly if around little ones who are prone to get into everything...
Be safe.

I agree with Big D- you need to CCW on your person. Also add a cell phone to your "Kit". Maybe a can of pepper spray in case you need to speak to the complex manager (donut redrawal?)

I used to live in a complex like that. When I moved in, it was actually a pretty nice place to live. Then there was a change in ownership and management, along with going Sec. 8. I didn't hang around long after that. It went from a decent place to live, to a likely place to die. A couple months ago I drove through, just to see how everything looked. It wasn't pretty, and it was the last time I'll ever go near the place. Stay safe!

Suggest you add a pocket knife and good flashlight (with spare batteries) to the kit.
Also, I'd keep the .357 on my person where it's safer. Kids get into things.

Eh. I've not only lived in such places, I've managed them. Couple things to be aware of -
Firing a .357 mag revolver in doors with full power loads and no ear protection isn't the most fun thing to do. Try some FBI loads, then your ears won't ring for the rest of your life. Children's hearing is even more prone to damage from loud noises like gun fire.
HUD tangled with the Supreme Court about guns and random searches many years ago and lost. It's essentially a fundamental right these days to have a gun in your home for protection. Trying to kick someone out for it would be a mess, esp if the housing is subsidized. Thus I wouldn't worry about it.
Those Boy Scout type suction cup snake bite kits? They're somewhere between useless and doing more harm than good. The only thing that works, more or less, is the Sawyer Venom Extractor. That's the one to have.
Some Dora DVDs and a coloring book are helpful too. Or Spongebob. He's more tolerable for adults.

You might want to consider adding a bottle of Evan Williams to your babysitting kit. Not for the kids, but it might make the experience a bit more tolerable for you.

I do have the spray, it is called Back Off. It is actually a dog repellent. The cell phone and flashlight are always on me, as well as a buck 180/ folder.
As far as the .357 goes, I do load it with .38 specials for that type of duty. I keep it up away from the kids. It is only for a really bad situation. I do carry a .25 in my pocket. The apartment is on the 2nd floor. I think a good dose of spray and a good solid shove will send an unwanted down some pretty steep stairs. Hopefully that will never happen.
I ain't worried about snakes there, but the kit is already in the first aid kit.
I am glad to know that other people go prepared. Now maybe, and that's a big maybe, my wife won't think I am over reacting.
Peace,
gordon
