Default A personal question I'd like y'alls opinion on

Okay I believe it's time. I started to post this in the thread with the jokes for us Texans but I decided to put it up as a new thread lest it be viewed as a hijack. I know I haven't been in here long (July 25th will be my 1 year anniversary). But I've tried to be fairly active and participate where I could. I'm going to trust y'all as a group to support me here. I'm prepared for a variety of different responses but I hope that most of you will see it my way.

Here's the deal:

I claim to be a native Texan. My father was a 4th generation Houstonian and my mother was a 5th generation Waco resident. Several generations of aunts and uncles all over Texas from Conroe to Corsicana and back again.

BUT....My dad was in the US Army Aircorps when I was born. My parents legal address was XXXX Some Ave, Houston Texas. I was born , that is to say my mother literally gave birth to me while my dad was stationed in Enid Oklahoma training Cadets how to fly. I was born in the base hospital.

BUT....My dad always swore to me that I was conceived in Houston and that he never let my feet touch the ground until he got me back home to Texas. He always assured me that I could rightfully claim to be a native Texan. "After all", he would say,"if you'd been born in Germany you would not have been German, see?" It always made sense to me.

So then, what say you. I will still continue to claim native Texan status regardless of the comments I get here but I would be very interested in y'all opinions/comments. Tell me what ya think.....

I am in a similar situation sir.
Dad was stationed at a USMC base in Memphis Tenn.
when i was born. And nothing at all against the great
state of Tennessee but i consider myself to be born
and bred from Indiana. Both parents born and raised
here. This is where we moved back to when "Pops" got
his 20 years in with the Corp and retired.
I say you are what you feel you are.

I feel like I got screwed!

My father was born in New York City.
When he was a young boy his family moved to Los Angeles.

Here comes the screwed part...
He joined the Air Force and was first stationed in Texas. Then he got stationed at Griffiss AFB in Rome, NY.
He was still stationed there when he met my mother & got out of the Air Force.
You think he had the good sense to head back to Texas? Nope, he stayed right here in New York State.

To think.... I could've been a Texan!

What does your birth certificate indicate? If it reads place of birth “Texas” you are home free. If it reads otherwise, then I would concede you can claim “Texan by birth* with an asterisk.”

Much like people that hold sports records earned on performance enhancing drugs.

Well, me too! I was born on Tyndall AFB, Panama City FL. my Dad was in the USAF, & as I was growing up we were either in San Antonio or the Canal Zone. My Mom was Panamanian, but she definitely turned Texan! So I consider myself Texan, even though right now I live in Oklahoma.

If I hadn't lived in Texas from 1985 til 1992 I would ask Why the hells it matter?

Since then I have seen a whole bunch of other states and wonder, Why the hells it matter?

I've heard from informed sources that you have a tattoo of the Alamo on--well, we won't go into that. But I'd say you damn sure qualify. Clearly Texas is in your DNA the way East Tennessee is in mine despite all the many years I've lived in Louisville.

I was born and raised in Michigan, I moved to the Upper Peninsula in 1977 and have lived there since. I own a house and pay city taxes and have been called for jury duty. But I am not considered a Upper (pronounced YOU PER) because I was not born there and my family is not Finnish. I am still a Troll ( someone hoe lives below the bridge ( the Mackinaw Bride, it connects the two peninsulas).

I'm dreaming of it, but I don't know if Mrs. Hillbilly will go for a move to Texas.
I am starting to seriously consider an escape to a free state.
Texas alone has 4 locations that my job would transfer me to.

While my dad served in the Marine Corps I was born in New Hampshire and lived in the south most of my life while traveling to base to base after my father retired after 22 1/2 years of serving we settled for Florida.

Is John McCain American? He was born on a naval base outside the US, I believe. Yes, he was ruled a US citizen. You have equal claim to being Texan.

It can get more complicated. Nicole Kidman's parents were vacationing in Hawaii when she was born. Her parents are Australian, so she is. But she was born here, so has dual citizenship in the USA.

Australian actress Rachel Blakely was born in Brunei, to a US father and an Australian mother. She is not considered to be from Brunei. She considers herself to be Australian, but has/had dual US citizenship, which makes it easier to visit her dad and sister here. Several years ago, she attended a ceremony which affirmed her primary citizenship to be Aussie.

I doubt that Kidman wants to run for President here, but in theory, she probbably could, as she was born on US soil.

Blakely was born to a US father, but to an Aussie mother, on foreign soil. She probably could not run.

He Whose Name May Not be Mentioned Here was supposedly born in Hawaii, to a US mother and a foreign father. He was able to run because he was born here, despite his father's citizenship. What if he was born here to TWO foreign nationals? See Kidman's case.

US bases are deemed to be US soil, I guess, so MCain could run. I think the base in his case was in Pamama. But he is evidently not a Panamanian citizen.

If Nicole Kidman runs for US office, she'd probably have to renounce Australian citizenship. I think only allegiance to the US qualifies one to run for US offices. Renouncing all foreign titles and encumberances, or whatever...If she is ever named as Dame Nicole by the Queen, she'd have to renounce that title.

Beware of joining a foreign military. The US State Dept. advised me that I'd lose US citizenshp if I joined the Army or national police in then-Rhodesia. This issue seems to have been waived for US pilots who joined the RAF in 1940. And the Flying Tigers were allowed to fight for China. My guess is that Rhodesia was too non-PC for the same consideration.

I think you are qualified as a native Texan. But you may have dual citizenship in the birth state.Still, it isn't awful, as if you had been born in say, New Jersey. Many Texans consider NJ to be a foreign country, and not a very desirable one, at that.

I am an immigrant. I was born in the American midwest and only moved here when I was maybe 2-3 years old. My parents were from Oklahoma and Arkansas. Actually, both were born in OK, but Mother was raised in AR and attended university there. I seldom mention this sordid family secret.
(Mother did earn her Master's degree at SMU in Dallas.)

Both of my own children were born in Texas, as were my grandchildren. I don't mind mentioning this.

No worries. Few people function at my mental level.

Seriously, most really don't think about such matters. Most today seem only to see life in tunnel vision. They don't learn anything that doesn't directly affect them. Most probably can't find many other countries on a globe.

My college journalism class was once at a convention in Chicago. I ordered tea in a restaurant and several classmates had never seen hot tea served in a cup. They had only experienced iced tea. I'm serious, and these were college students. I wrote fan fiction about a now-defunct TV series, and in one story, named new characters after South Vietnamese cities. No one ever caught on. This wasn't just about Americans; my stories were read in about 40 countries.

How many do you know who can't discuss anything beyond which football teams are playing the next weekend? Okay, maybe they'll know the name of the next Royal baby, due this next week, if they're women.

Ask most when the Revolution was and they'll either think you mean a TV show produced by J.J. Abrams or go blank. Who led the first bombing raid on Tokyo? Who was Audie Murphy?

The staff at my local Outback couldn't name even one of the Australian states, and they have an Aussie theme and the flag on the wall! And my waitress has a degree in Psychology and the manager is also an educated woman.

Folks, we're in deep mud as a nation. I like watching Leno when he goes Jaywalking. I never miss a question, but his victims miss most answers. One ninny thought Sir Winston Churchill, KG, managed a rock group. (Just was shown his photo.) Don't even get me going on the value of knowing about the Kardashians or New Jersey housewives.

I got myself upset. I'm going to make a cup of tea. That got my ancestors through a lot, in an empire on which the sun once never set. Times have changed, frequently not for the better. But good tea remains good tea, and a balm for that which provokes. (No, I'm not on Twining's payroll. But they should pay me for my frequent promotions of their products!)

It's like that old line everybody's heard about the Yankee couple who moves South, has kids, and asks if the kids are Southerners. Says the True Native, "If the cat has kittens in the oven, we don't call them biscuits." Your parents were genuine Texans, so, so are you. Doesn't matter where you were born.

^^^ Sad, but true. As my avatar indicates, I'm a Texan, born and raised, but after joining the Air Force I haven't lived there again. That said, I'm a Texan, a proud one, and nobody can take that away from me...it's a mindset. That said, I believe you can consider yourself one too, and be proud of it. :-)

Mom was born in Van Buren, Dad in Tukwila WA. So, I'm half southern I guess, can only attribute half my heritage to Washington. But wait, Gramma on Dads side was born on Lanai but her parents had moved there from Germany. So I guess I'm 1/4 German Polynesian....only gramps dad on dads side had moved to Vancouver BC from the Midwest, so I guess there's some Midwestern Canadian there too...after my gramps was born they moved to Bellingham, where my wife was born.......ok, now I'm just confused.......you said you were from Enid, eh??

My father was working in Lawrence, KS during WWII when I was born there. We went back to his home in Hattiesburg, MS when I was 6 months old. At the age of 28, I moved to Louisiana, Married a local girl and put 2 kids through LSU. I have lived here for 40 years. I am from Louisiana now and I have been here longer.

You are where you settle.

Hmmm...I dunno, Jack. I'd sure like to tell you that you are a Texan, but from what I've experienced over the years, there might be some question as to if that's really the case.

Y'see, my younger brother lived in Texas for over 30 years. His three daughters were born in Texas and Texans consider the girls real true Texans. My brother, on the other hand, even though he lived there for over three decades, is not considered a true Texan. He's a transplant. Although he considers himself a Texan at heart, he's not a real native.

So, sure, you can continue to call yourself a real Texan, but deep down in your heart, you know you're really an Okie.

But instead you're a Roman.

You're a Texan. It is primarily a state of mind.

Never ask a man if he's from Texas. If he is he will tell you. If he's not, you wouldn't want to hurt his feelings.
Seems to me no real Texan would care where some other fella drew the line. I believe everyman with good in his heart and gun in his hand has alittle Texas in him.
Stop questioning your father!

According to an old girlfriend California used to be similar with talk of being a Native Son. She spent a few years of grade school there while her dad was in the Navy. Said that when the local kids would make too much about being a Native Son they would counter with a rhyme that went: The miners came in ’49 and the whores in ’51. When they got together them made a Native Son. I suspect a moderator from California will delete this shortly so I apologize in advance.

I agree that what you birth certificate states as where you were born, unless forged, is you birth state, the rest is where you were raised, lived, died. You breathed the air from Oklahoma ate food there deposited waste there, but your heart will and has always been in Texas.

It's a mind thing.

Sorry, but you are an Okie. by birth, and that's alright because Okies are great people. What you are is a Naturalized Texan, but don't feel bad. Davy Crockett, Sam Houston, and Stephen F. Austin were all Naturalized Texans. Just thank the Lord that you were not born a Y-word. Naturalized Texans are good, and loyal, people and you can still run for governor of Texas

I feel your pain, and yes, you are genuine Texan. My parents lived in Texarkana, Texas, and when it was time for me to come in this world, the local hospital was in Texarkana,Arkansas. I have lived in Texas all my life. If you know anything about Texarkana, you know both sides of the city look down their noses at the other. The local high school rivalry is one of the biggest in the country, THS vs. AHS. I ain't no Arkie, period. I don't care what that damn birth certificate says. Even the hospital I was born in, moved to the Texas side.

Regarding being born abroad, I believe if you have one US parent you can claim US citizenship. Certainly US missionaries have children born abroad.

AFAIK, the USA is the only country that grants citizenship to people born here. It has created a cottage industry of fairly wealthy foreigners travelling to the USA to bear children who can later claim dual citizenship.

In my case, My mother was from the Jersey shore and Dad was from the hills of northern PA. I was born in NJ and moved to PA when less than a year old. I moved to NC in 1982 and to Iowa in 1986. I moved back to Asheville in 1996 and consider myself a transplant although to a lot of natives I am and always will be a yankee.

My family came to Plymouth, MA 40 years after the original pilgrim settlers.

Oh, and I forgot to mention that, being half Southern, I am legally entitled to use the term "Y'all"....

A texan KNOWS if he is a Texan or not.

It's in your heart, not on a piece of paper.

Being a Texan is not just about being born here...there are liberals infesting this great state who I don't consider true Texans. Being a Texan is about attitude and beliefs...in the same way that someone who immigrates to the USA (legally) and does everything possible to make himself an American (citizenship, language, working, etc) BECOMES a true American...and often, more true to America than many who just happen to be born here.

While some may quibble about the "native" status, I don't...as far as I can tell, you sir meet the criteria as a Texan. Real men are born in Texas, or try to get here as soon as they can.

You can bet we call Houston, Bowie, Crockett, Travis, Fannin, and all that served and died with them, TEXAN. Don't matter where you started at. It takes more than a hat and boots.

When a person claims to be a, fill in the blank, it's really a state of mind, and how the person making the statement wants to be perceived. Texans don't have a lock on this, but it does appear to be very important to them.

Default My Dad is almost stateless

He was born on the highway in the middle of the night somewhere around the GA/FL border, but he was registered the next day in FL so he counts that.

Oh as far as the original question.. I don't count temporary military assignments unless the 'birther' wants to claim it.

Not to irritate any "foreigners" but, i wonder how many New Yorkers, Californians and those from Colorado--are wishing they were Texans?
