Default Tomorrow is Veterans Day

Tomorrow is Veterans Day. To all our vets out there, here's a big THANK YOU for preserving our freedoms. Some of you are combat vets, some are not. Regardless, you signed your name on the dotted line and pledged your lives to your country.

As George Patton put it: Every single man in this Army plays a vital role. Don't ever let up. Don't ever think that your job is unimportant. Every man has a job to do and he must do it.

And you did your jobs. Again, THANKS to you all.

John

And, for some, joining the military wasn't exactly a free choice.

But they did the right thing.

Thanks!

My father and I will be going to the Veteran's Lunch at Applebees tomorrow. At 89 he's still going to work 5 days a week so we'll have to take a long lunch hour. He's a Veteran of WWII with 33 months in the ETO. North Africa, Italy, Corsica & France.

His service makes my 4 years in the USAF look like a walk in the park. He's the best man I have ever known.

LTC, Sgt. USAF 1966-1970

Don't get the day off , but since I work for a big defense contractor (British owned!) , they treat us right. Special recognition on the in-house website , our pics in the lobby hallway , and free lunch in the cafeteria. Every year they give us pins that have the company name and VETERAN on it.

The (veteran owned) company I worked for right after I got off active duty , gave only the vets the day off with pay. The civvies who showed up (they could take a vac or personal day) , got to do a full company inventory and field day!

As it always seems to happen I will be working Veterans day once again. Now it is a part time job driving around an Arizona golf course so the work isn't all that bad. Still it would be nice if just once I was off on veterans day. I am planning on wearing a button/name tag that reads: Yes, I am a veteran....and you are welcome! (o;

When I worked at Dillon, I made it a requirement of my employment that I got Veteran's day off - to go down to the parade and personally thank as many vets as I could. They were glad to grant that one condition, and never renegged on it.

At least they haven't moved it to a Monday.
When I came back in '71 they said don't fly in uniform. Glad things have changed.

Otherwise, THANKS, and YOU'RE WELCOME - as both can apply. And if I see you tomorrow, I'll buy you a drink.

Default What is a veteran?

From an anonymous author:

Some veterans bear visible signs of their service: a missing limb, a jagged scar, a certain look in the eye.

Others may carry the evidence inside them: a pin holding a bone together, A piece of shrapnel in the leg or perhaps another sort of inner steel: The soul's ally forged in the refinery of adversity.

Except in parades, however, the men and women who have kept America safe wear no badge or emblem. You can't tell a vet just by looking.

What is a vet?

He is the cop on the beat who spent six months in Saudi Arabia sweating two gallons a day making sure the armored personnel carriers didn't run out of fuel.

He is the barroom loudmouth, dumber than five wooden planks, whose overgrown frat-boy behavior is outweighed a hundred times in the cosmic scales by four hours of exquisite bravery near the 38th parallel.

She or he is the nurse who fought against futility and went to sleep sobbing every night for two solid years in Danang.

He is the POW who went away one person and came back another or didn't come back AT ALL.

He is the Quantico drill instructor who has never seen combat but has saved countless lives by turning slouchy, no-account rednecks and gang members into Marines, and teaching them to watch each other's backs.

He is the parade riding Legionnaire who pins on his ribbons and medals with a prosthetic hand.

He is the career quartermaster who watches the ribbons and medals pass him by.

He is the three anonymous heroes in The Tomb Of The Unknowns, whose presence at the Arlington National Cemetery must forever preserve the memory of all the anonymous heroes whose valor remains unrecognized with them on the battlefield or in the ocean's sunless deep.

He is the old guy bagging groceries at the supermarket, aggravatingly slow, who helped liberate a Nazi death camp and who wishes all day long that his wife were still alive to hold him when the nightmares come.

He is an ordinary and yet an extraordinary human being, a person who offered some of his life's most vital years in the service of his country, and who sacrificed his ambitions so others would not have to sacrifice theirs.

He is a Soldier, Marine, Sailor, Coastguardsman or Airman, and also a savior and a sword against the darkness, and he is nothing more than the finest, greatest testimony on behalf of the finest, greatest nation ever known.

So remember each time you see someone who has served our country. When you see one just lean over and say "Thank you."

That's all most people need, and in most cases it will mean more than any medals they could have been awarded or were awarded.

Two little words that mean a lot, "THANK YOU".

God Bless Our Veterans!

===============================

Every man and woman who has defended and is defending us deserves our recognition.

I'm sure you know at least one person who has served or is serving this great nation.

A simple, "Thank you!" will mean more to them than you could ever know.

Default God bless the Vets

Thank you is not enough. The debt we owe our veterans simply cannot be repaid. Know that there are some of us who honor, respect, and cherish your service today, and every day. You are the Best America has to offer. God bless our veterans, and God save the Republic.

I would like to add my thank you to all the veterans. Both those who have served, are serving, and will be serving. To those who are in harm's way in Afghanistan and Iraq, may God be with you and watch over you, so that you may return home to your families and loved ones. To those who are no longer with us, thank you. Without your ultimate scarifice, this country wouldn't be what it is today. I salute you. God bless you all.
