Default Federal Champion 22 issue/ New shooter to the fold

Last Friday, before I went to work in the ER, I met one of our ER fellows, (physician in training for pediatric emergency medicine) at the indoor range I frequent. It is close to the hospital and is well run.

He has shot before but not very much.

Sooooooo, I introduce him to my Ruger Mark II, S&W Model 17 (no dash), and S&W M&P 45 ACP.

He has two guns, a CZ 75 in 9mm and a Lorcin 22 (picture me shuddering when I see it). He tells me that both guns were given to him by a family member.

We talk a bit about safety, sight pictures, trigger squeeze, etc, etc.

I have him shoot the Mark II, after I demonstrate the workings etc, etc.

Then he shot the S&W Model 17. He loved it.

I had brought 150 rounds of Federal Champion, 22 LR, standard velocity, RNL. It is in a blue box. Now I have shot this before, and have not had a problem with the rounds, but today (naturally, I have a new person on board) I have at least 6 to 8 rounds fail to fire. Needless to say, this is irritating, trying to bring a new person into the sport.

Has anyone had an issue with these rounds, or am I dealing with fluke?

He had a ball, and I know we will be going back to the range at some point.

I was very impressed with the staff member we had at the range. He was very supportive and reinforced the concepts I had presented.

All in all a good day at the range

Did it malfunction in one or both guns?

If it was just the Ruger, there might be some brass shavings around the firing pin that need to be cleaned out, or perhaps the breech area had some crud that did not allow the bolt to seat all the way down and made the strikes a bit light.

Did these rounds fire the second time you tried them, if you put them back in the gun? If they did, it's likely the gun has some crud in it or the priming mix didnt go all the way around the rim.

My Buckmark will start to misfire after three or four range sessions without cleaning it from build up of crud. I know what you're thinking...

I've not had any problems with the Federal in my .22's. S&W Mod 17 and 63 and High Standard Victor and IZH 34M, as well as several rifles. It is not as accurate in my pistols as Aguila SE 40 gr. standard velocity or CCI standard velocity so I don't ust it as frequently. I mainly use it outdoors for plinking.
