Default Over run by Yellow Jackets

My nephew is visiting from South Korea, so we have been doing a lot of fishing and "catching". I have a nice cleaning table with double stainless sinks out side. The last 4 times I've cleaned fish I have litterally had to pick up and move to another area because I was over run by yellow jackets. Can't find any nests anywhere close, but am thinking there are several by the number of workers out scavenging. This morning I was cleaning snapper and grouper and with in 15 minutes there were hundreds around me. I made the wife and grandkids go back in the house they were so bad. (the yellow jackets, not the wife and grandkids :-) )

Anyone use any of the advertised traps or poisons? They are really starting to be a nuisance.

thanks in advance.....

I'd just spend some time observing them, to find out where their nest is located. In my experience, they are always located in the ground, usually next to some sort of vegetation (shrubs, trees, ferns, etc.). If you are in the burbs, check in your planting beds. In the country, try the tree-lines, hill-sides, etc. Early morning, or dusk can be a good time to see where they are coming from/ going to...

When you find it, just dump some gasoline down the hole, don't have to light it... If they are all in there, you can also aggravate the nest (stomp on it a little) and blast them with some hornet killer when they pour out to try to swarm and annihilate you. I've done it both ways, the can of hornet killer in each hand blasting away is definitely a rush!

People with a deep appreciation of nature, and it's creatures, may disagree, but I think Yellow Jackets are all vermin that must die. I have no problem with bees, will only kill a hornet if it messes with me, or attaches a nest to my property, but Yellow Jackets must die. Good luck.

here's a trap that works........How to Make a Trap for Yellow Jackets | eHow.com

If you do the gas in the nest thing, I suggest you wait till after dark when all the bees are back and they are dormant.

Default Yellow jackets

Ran into this trouble late summer and up to last week . They had evidently built their home under my wood pile next to the back of my house . Wife was moving some things around in the same area late summer and got stung 2-3 times . I deceided to take care of them as I mow grass right next to there and my grandaughters swing set is close as well . Got down to the last log and kicked it over with my foot . They swarmed out but I was too quick . Let them settle down and walked back . They have a 10-12" square honey comb looking structure in the ground . I used some bee/wasp spray several times and they seem to be finished .

Ditto on the waiting till all the little sob's are back in their nest before using the gasoline. Wouldn't try gas around the house, porch, outbuilding or such. Works great when the nest is not located next to anything important. Gas fumes will move around on the ground a long way and especially downhill to something that might have a spark or flame. Friend did that once. Poured about 5-10 gallons on a huge brush pile and he and his grandpa walked about 75-100 feet downhill to "safety". He told his grandpa to wait there and he would light a rag and walk up there and throw it on the pile. He got his cigarette lighter out and said when he thumbed the spark wheel, the world blew up! Knocked them both on the ground, burned his eyebrows off and used all the oxygen around them. Couldn't breath for several moments. They were lucky!

If they're near your house or a building, see my remedy on my web site. Bug zapper! Have to have the right one and do a little moding to it though.

youcannotlose(dot)net (put a period in where it says "dot")

Hope it alright to post that. If it's not, accept my appoligies and remove it.

Talking

I know how to deal with them once I find them. I know they aren't above ground or in any of my buildings. Just don't have time to wonder around the yard looking under oak leaves or pine straw to find a hole less than 1/2" in diameter. The neighbors already think I'm crazy because I shoot at things in the yard just to make them go "clang".

Am looking for something effective for them to take home to momma and kill the "REMF"s and Lady in Waiting.

Malathion is EXTREMELY effective!

Pour some in their ground hole or spray the inlet to the paper hive and then spray the paper & watch 'em fall.

Ask me how I know.

Spray one in mid flight and DRT.

Default In the fall..

Yellow Jacket behavior changes. They get hungry for meat and blood. I have noticed that they show up when dressing game or cleaning fish (as you found out)
I don't know what their range is but the buggers sure seem to find a carcass fast.
Good luck!!

exactly what's happening in my back yard. Makes it hard to clean or dress your game. I try to throw a few scraps about 10' away from me to draw them away, but all that seems to do is bring more. It's hard to swing a filet knife with hundreds of aggressive yellow jackets around your hands and what you're cutting. Might have to build a screened in cleaning house next spring.

still looking for bait they can/will take back to the nest.

NEVER treat the nest, during the day. You'll get stung, and most will be out foraging anyway.

Identify the entrance hole, wait till AFTER dark, put an ounce or two of Sevin Dust in the hole.

You will have a 100% sterile nest in the morning.

Lordy, I hate those things, as I am terribly allergic to their stings.

Default Re: Yellowjacket Traps

I've tried the hard plastic tube type and found these to be far superior. Mine get so full of yellowjackets, hornets and flies I have to replace them every month or so. We just drain the apple smelling fluid that you get when you put water in them (there's a dissolving bag of scent powder in them when you get them) and use the wife's hummingbird sugar water recipe (one part sugar to four parts water). They love it. I usually find them at Lowe's for $4.99.
