Another WTH moment
Saw where the feds want to do a little deer hunting at Valley Forge-Apparently the holding capicity is around 200 and there are over 1200 deer. The anti's are up in arms about the cruelty of hunting and think alternative methods to reduce the deer population be used..... like introducing coyotes into the park so nature can take its' course through natural predation
Now I don't know about you guys, but if I got to go and had my choice between being ran down, attacked, torn to pieces and eaten alive by a pack of coyotes versus walking out to get in my car and taking one behind the ear from a 100 yards away-I'm a gonna go with the rifle shot. I got to think the deer feel the same way.

Some people do not have the ability to think outside their little box. I can, and I'm sure I'm not alone, drop a deer dead before he starts falling with his complete motor drive shut down. That would take one heck of a coyote, which I could do that to also. ; )
Introducing coyotes has its blowback, too.

Another point of interest, off topic: They have released radio collared, (neutered, I hope) coyotes in downtown Chicago. This to control the rodent population. This is no BS.
Coyotes to control deer, I suggest coyotes to control do gooders. Let them experience the joy of being dinner for vermin.

Cajunlawyer, I seen that segment on fox news and pretty much made the same comment to my wife. These greenies/tree huggers/animal rights aint hitting on three clyinders. Doesnt anyone ever sit down with one and screw them down on such a absurb comment, like maybe a actual video of a pack of coyotes killing a deer?
I am a people watcher and profiler. It`s my entertainment when I aint here, or rideing quad. I have found that many things go hand in hand with most people. I probley can ask a persons views on three questions and accurately perdict how they will answer the next 100!

I've lived in the Ozarks all my life and I didn't even know that a pack of coyotes could kill a deer. A fawn maybe? Or one hell of a large and hungry pack. Oh well, guess you learn sumpin every day.

Here's a similar true life event for you. Deer were overrunning a local golf course in Connecticut. The nearby residents were up in arms about the havoc the deer were wreaking on their shrubs. The head pro contracted a bowhunter to "thin" or at least scare off the herd. An arrowed deer ran into a residents yard and expired in a bloody heap. The resident freaked out, and being a club member with political pull demanded a cease and desist. Therefore, everyone else had to resort to the expense of hanging netting on their precious plants they wanted to protect..........By the way
Those deer up in CT. have some size to them. If you nail one in the road at night, you can count on some serious damage to your vehicle, if not much worse!

That would never happen, so they should sell the meat, and use the Revenue to boost the Local Economy.

In my youth I trapped beaver here in Oregon, along the Metolius River. While setting/checking traps I witnessed a doe being run down by three coyotes. They were on heavily crusted snow. The doe couldn't run on it because her hooves would break through the crust, while the coyotes could run on top of the crust. They quickly caught up to her and just started tearin' away at her hind end. Her screaming bleats were heart rendering.
I put her down with a single shot to the head from maybe 70 yards out. The coyotes scattered at the shot, but I figured they would come back later. Sure enough, the next day as I was again checking my traps, she was very "eaten up" and there were additional 'yote tracks around her.
I don't think coyotes are that efficient at keeping deer populations in check though, maybe some but not alot. Taking of fawns and the weak are much more likely than healthy adults.
Peace,

Sir, don't be makin' fun of my Birks. Two of the more important lessons my infantry service taught me are that: (A) uncomfortable footwear is not to be tolerated; and (B) camouflage is important. Birks fit both requirements nicely.
Re deer infestations, my folks' upscale subdivision has this problem and once had an HOA meeting about how to address it. Some soccer mom type was horrified at the notion of killing "Bambi" and instead suggested birth control for the deer. My dad asked how she intended to get the deer to wear condoms.
Hope this helps, and Semper Fi.

We had this issue in a local Columbus park. The tree huggers made the city "relocate" the deer. So they shot them with darts and attempted to relocate them. 1/2 of them died in transport and most of the rest didn't survive once they arrived at their new location. In the end, it cost the city major bucks, and most of them still died. The local bow hunters would have done the job for free and filled up the food kitchens pantries for a year. Tree hugging and common sense are mutually exclusive.

What about deer feeding stations with saltpeter added.
If they can't be neutered then maybe just slowing them down a bit.
Well no, probably not.
Oh, nevermind.

Don't call me "sir;" I used to work for a living. I hope you don't feel that I was badmouthing YOUR footwear, since that was the farthest thing from my mind. Furthermore, I fully empathize with the use of camouflage, particularly when carrying weapons. I used to wear Birkenstocks also, but usually not in the winter. Around here, the treehuggers wear them with socks!

Sir, no worries--I knew you were kidding. FWIW, I've actually worn my Birks while shoveling snow. What I really like, though, is wearing them to the range and outshooting the mall ninjas.

Don't know about coy dogs eating full grown healthy deer. In this part of the state they don't seem too, and we have plenty of both. They do eat folks' little pet yip yap dogs and kitty kats. They will come right up into your yard and snatch a small dog or cat. They leave large dogs alone.
Common sense would tell you that controlling the deer population with coy dogs is a bad idea. Now a wolf pack, or dozen cougars or so might make a dent in the bambi population.

I hear Siberian tigers are on the endangered list. Why not bring in a few to eat up the overpopulated deer and when they get through with them they can eat some of the local people for a while before we catch them and take them back to wherever Siberian tigers come from. Wait! I've got a better idea. Let's use elephants. They can stomp the hell out of the deer and the only peripheral damage would be the total destruction of any kind of plant life for miles around. Think what those folks walking around with those little pooper scoopers would be thinking. Elephants would certainly make the game of golf more challenging. Apparently these folks have never heard of unintended cosequenses. Even if this plan did work, whenever the yotes ran out of grub the next meal would be little Fluffy the poodle, Fifi the Persian cat or whatever they happened to have in their baby stroller.

Here in Wisconsin, we take our deer hunting pretty seriously, just
like folks in civilised states. We must be too bloodthirsty, 'cause
wolves have been re-introduced in the state. Not sure which
animals are at risk here, but things should get interesting in a couple more years. I bet there's some good recipes for wolf....

We got the wolves here several years ago - they started in Yellowstone and have spread nearly statewide along with moving into Idaho and Montana. They've played hell with the elk herds and a friend of mine got pics of a small pack up in the Big Horn Mountains pulling down a full grown heifer last summer. Not a pretty sight. On the other hand, I've never seen coyotes take down a healthy full-grown deer though they will take sick ones and they love sheep! I think they should turn loose a pack or two of wolves in Central Park and see how those folks like having them in their back yards!

There was a similar situation in an Urban Park in the East Bay Area several years ago. It was proposed that the population be brought under control VIA an Archery hunt but the folk in the SF Bay area were up in arms about this. Long story short Cal DFG darted the deer and placed radio collars on them and relocated them to the East Bay Hills. The local Mountain Lions sure did appreciate all the happy meals thus provided. They ate every one of them in short order.

Really? Need some facts (better yet pictures) to support this post. Somehow I cannot imagine a coyote on the Magnificent Mile...which is, after all, downtown Chicago.
Be safe.

Point Reyes National Seashore has a herd of Tule Elk that is overpopulating the park. The NPS and the locals (Marin County) will not allow a hunt to thin the herd and CDFG will not allow the Elk to be transported out of the area because of exposure to diseases by the surrounding Dairy Cattle. So the NPS used birth control. They darted the elk and injected them with some form of birth control. I happened to visit the park and I asked one of the Rangers how that was going. His response was that it worked fine the first year but that they have not been able to get close enough to dart them again. It seems they walked up behind a horse to dart them but the Elk are now wise to this trick. I personally think they should bring is a couple of Mountain Lions or maybe reintroduce the California Grizzley Bear.

Merril:
I spent most of my time hanging out at Crane Flat so do not remember seeing the deer at the golf couse. I was checking for Ribes above a stream near Wawona and taking lunch break when I heard a splashing. I looked and there was a huge 4 point Mule Deer wading down the middle of the creek. We were at a spike camp above Wawona when the Gulf of Tonkin incident occurred back in the Summer of 1964. I was 19 at the time and three years later I was a private.
I was not too far from your place last month. A friend of mine invited me along Elk hunting in the Fish Lake District near Capitol Reefs National Park. He got a real nice 6X6 bull on the second day. That was a nice trip.

It's a shame how passion and ignorance will cause animals to suffer. I am referring to the deer and coyote as well. The deer will most likely continue to multiply and then die gruesome deaths such as starvation and disease. The coyote will most likely become a nuisance to the passionately ignorant and well, you know how the story ends. People need to understand the facts to good deer management and then begin to work from that point minus blind passion. Many of our wildlife management agencies around the States have begun to do this and are getting good results.
1200 hundred deer in an area that should only support approximately 200, let the hunters take care of the this situation. If not, anti-hunting and animal rights activists are allowing animals to suffer needlessly. And that is just plain hypocrisy.

Oh yee of little faith. T.V. news ran several incidents of yotes in the parks north, south and west of the "Loop" over the last few years. They occasionally wander into downtown at night. Believe me there's plenty of rodents (even 2 legged kind) down there. I was sharing a bottle of white port with a homeless guy downtown a couple weeks ago and he told me he has to be careful where he flops at night because of coyotes..

Tree hugging and common sense are mutually exclusive.

Yep, Sharon Woods. I live a few miles from there. What a debacle ...

Yup, Sharon Woods.
Some bunch of coordinators wanted to hire the band I was in at that time to play at some sort of rally against the hunters' coming into Sharon Woods.
I told them that unless it was to raise money to feed the overpopulated deer herd, no dice.
I used to run there 3 times a week. Love that place.

I'll be happy to donate the 'yotes that have been seen around here as of late. All they have to do is to come here and catch 'em.

What about deer feeding stations with saltpeter added.
If they can't be neutered then maybe just slowing them down a bit.

Kind of reminds me of the rancher and the peta lady. Peta recommened that coyotes be nutered. Rancher told her: "Lady, they ain't screwing my sheep, they're eat'n them".
I don't think coyotes will thin out the deer that much, but they will take care of the local poodle population.

Good idea. The deer can make gunpowder and blow up coyotes. I'm taking a bag of charcoal to the woods today.

Just give me a hunting license for that area. I guarantee you all the deer will run off when they hear feralmerril is in the woods!

The coyote population is booming in my neck of the woods. I know they are pretty good deer hunters. I've come across the remains of full grown deer that have been taken down by a pack of coyotes. I've even witnessed a chase firsthand a few summers back. Generally I believe they stick to smaller critters... rabbits.. squirrels etc.

I'm picturing little Mountain Lion scat piles with radio collars in them...
