Default Improvised range bag... retired shaving kit!

Cleaning out my basement recently, I came across my old shaving kit bag, which has been retired for awhile. Rather than chucking it, I tried to think of something useful for it to do, and came up with this...

It's got 250 rounds of .38 Special in the main compartment, a half dozen full speedloaders in the left pocket, a cleaning kit, earplugs, and a screwdriver in the center side pucket, and a mesh bag for empties and orphan sock for wiping carbon off in the right. It'd probably hold 400 rounds easy, and I could put the mesh bag and sock in on top of the ammo and put another half-dozen speedloaders on the right.

Doesn't show in the pics, but there's a strap handle on the left side... Mighty handy little package to grab when I want to spend a little time with one of my .38's!

Anyone else have an improvised range bag? What is it and how do you fill it?

I have an old girlfriend's size 44D bra that holds two guns in one side and 600 rounds of ammo in the other...and I don't even have to carry it if I wear a big enough sweater.

I use a large plastic toolbox with the lift-out tray as an improvised range "bag". It holds all the supplies I may need, including a handgun or two in gun rugs. As an added plus, it can be padlocked when I'm on the firing line. It was an inexpensive solution to my having to carry two or more bags each time I went shooting.

I use a brown canvas tool bag purchased at Sears, lots of pockets to store tools, cleaning rods etc. and it doesn't shout guns inside. It just looks like a tool bag, works real well for me.

Good idea Charles!
I use bags for similar things. I ran across a bicycle bag that was padded & the compartments are adjustable because of the Velcro. it has lots of pockets, excellent for extra mags, speed loaders, ziplock bags, etc. It is padded, so inside it looks like a camera bag. the top zips around like your razor bag flips back and exposes the entire inside. The sides are stiff, so it doesn't collapse. When I am riding in the car, I can adjust the partitions, leave the top unzipped but "closed" & angle the butt towards me and conceal carry there. Very convenient. That said, I bought a couple more camera/video bags from the thrift store. I try to keep it stocked with ear & eye protection, wipes, etc. for "visitors" that go to the range with us. I had to purchase mine, it's better to recycle like you did!

I re-purposed a Formica clad dense particle board case with carrying handle that originally contained a piece of test equipment, a Defibrillator Analyzer to be exact.

After removing some of the support blocks the analyzer screwed into, the ID of the box perimeter is a whisper larger than the OD of the hard plastic case my Ruger MkII 678 Target came in, and ten 100 round boxes of .22lr will fit below it. However, some of the ten boxes are displaced by 5 magazines, a couple of mag loaders, a boresnake, an aerosol can of solvent, a bottle of Kroil, some rags and a set of hemostats for the rare FTE.

The hinged lid is removable and has an inch high lip around the bottom of it. When removed and inverted, it's an excellent place to dump a box of cartridges and load up the mags without the loose rounds escaping to parts unknown.

With bulk ammo, I take the 5x20 hole plastic piece out of the slide top boxes and fill them with loose rounds, so I don't know how many rounds are in them, but I'm not likely to run out whether I'm plinking with bulk or shootin' the good stuff.
