Default Skelton books

What is your favorite Skeeter Skelton book? I saw a nice copy of "Good Friends - Good Guns - Good Whiskey" for $75 today.

Just how many books did he write? I have that one too. I assumed it was his only book.

I had these two, but sold them. Both great reads!

I have them both and they are both good but I think "Good Guns..." is the better of the two.

My dad and I both had a copy each of both of Skeeter's books. When my dad passed away in 2004, I gave his copies to a good shooting friend at work. He just started reading the first one and told me can't remember enjoying a book so much before. He said he laughed really hard at some of the Jug Johnson stories and the Me and Joe stories really made him happy.

Skeeter Skelton is far and above my favorite gun writer. In addition to being extremely knowledgeable about all things firearms, he had a way with words. Reading Skelton was like talking with an old friend. I had my S&W 624 and my Ruger Blackhawk .44 Specials engraved as Skeeter Skelton tributes, including his Bar-T cattle brand.

A paperback called "I remember Skeeter" came out about ten years ago. It was written after his death. It has lot's of the same articles in the two books mentioned plus a few more. Shouldn't cost near as much either.
Skeeter was my favorite writer.

"I Remember Skeeter" was edited by his wife, Sally Jim Skelton. Good stories and memories by many of Skeeter's peers.

Default Skeeters Books

The two Skeeter books are some of my most prized possessions,I can be a little down with the stress of running a business or the state of the country or just down in general and an hour or so with these books will smooth it all out,I so wish old Skeet was still around so we could all tell him how much his work is appreciated and enjoyed, its a shame a new generation of shooters cant easily obtain these works.

Shooting Times also had a Skeeter Skelton on Handguns magazine published Oct 1980.

It is a cross between his books and magazine articles. Lots of good reading in there too.

In Bill Jordans "Mostly Huntn" book he has the "true story" how the Model 19 came about with the help of Skeeter.

That Shooting Times issue you mentioned from '80 is also in my collection. I bought it at a gun show in the late '90s. Thought I really got screwed when I paid $15 for it. I saw one on E-Bay recently for $125.

Shooting times ran articles every month by Skeeter. I'm cheap and never throw anything away (think Hoarders). I used to read in the winter, and going back and re-reading old Skeeter articles was one of my favorite ways to spend winter evenings.

Also, Skeeter liked K22s. Got to be another feather in his cap.

Too bad he died young.

I bought his boy's book last year, tales from down on the border or something like that. Not quite as good as his old man, but good regardless. BTW Bart was named after the ranch the Bar T...trivia

I trace my fondness for S&W handguns to Skeeter Skelton's writings. His first article I read was in the September, 1975 issue of SHOOTING TIMES. Like others, I kept all the subsequent issues with his writings, until he died. I re-read them, too.

There was another soft-cover collection of Skeeter's writings published by SHOOTING TIMES in 1985 called "Skeeter Skelton's Handgun Tales." Again, full of his Me-and-Joe stories, Dobe Grant stories, western history and just plain Skeeter gun writings.

I met and talked with him once, at the NRA convention in Salt Lake City where he was given the Outstanding American Handgunner award. One of the highlights of my shooting life.

I guess what capped off the 1st one as being my favorite was the Me and Joe stories. It really reminded me of my youth growing up with my best friend Doug. I somehow managed to gravitate towards the same guns as Skeeter, not just cuz he liked them, but cuz they were just good!!
If I am not mistaken his first article was about June or July 1966, 2 or 3 months before I was born so I guess I kinda grew up with him during his writing career.
I bought both books when they were still in print and thought at the time they were expensive at $25.00 each. Those books were stolen and I didnt think about replacing them until I saw some for sale here on the forum. Imagine my surprise when I saw they were going for over $100!!!
I lucked out and my beautiful wife found me the 1st one at a used book store for christmas one year, and I was able to buy the second one off my good forum member buddy 66TAS.
I guess if there was ever a "Feel Good" book these are it. I have read the likes of Keith, Cooper, etc. and they pale in comparison to style that Skeeter had. Jordan was close, but only Skeeter had a style that didnt project him as being full of himself...something I cant say about the others.

Several of us "graying" shooters get together every now and again and sip a little Henry McKenna as we remember "Skeeter". He was most suredly an interesting man.

I subscribed to Shooting Times for 35 years so I could read Skeeter's articles. I average reading 2 to 3 books per week on about any subject, and have for years. Skeeter is one of the best I have ever read.

I quit gun magazines when Skeeter passed on.

I often wonder how he would have felt about the S&W and Colt revolvers that came out after his passing. Especially the new S&W's with two-piece barrels and such.

I have a couple of his books and the reading of them is truly "fireside" entertainment.

My Dad bought the books when they first came out.

I have no clue how many times I read those books when I was in School.

Now that I have a place of my own I wanted to try a get copies for my Library. I don't want to pay and arm and a leg for 'em. So on a lark I e-mailed Shooting Times about republishing them, seemed to me that would be a gold mine for them. Got a rude e-mail back from the editor. Said that while Shooting Times understood there was a huge demand for them to reprint the books. They had no desire to do so. Glad I canceled Shooting Times.

Seems stupid that the books are out of print. Jordan, Keith, Askins, O'Conner, and Cooper are all still in print.

The "Dark Canyon" site has a number of Mr. Skelton's article's available. Dark Canyon. I read many of these in print years ago, but they are always worth reading again. Hope all of you enjoy.
